Joe Biden had big ambitions. His State of the Union was designed to persuade dubious voters—only 37 percent of Democrats want him to run again!—that he deserves a second term.
But the American people aren’t stupid. A recent Washington Post poll found 60 percent of Americans believe Biden hasn’t made progress in creating good jobs. They remember when he took office, inflation was lower, gas was cheaper, streets were safer, and our border secure.
Sadly for him, Biden ultimately was Biden. He boasted, he shouted, he misled, he took the cheap shots—preaching unity while accusing opponents of secret plans to cut social security and Medicare, and threaten democracy. Calling for a ban on resort fees while barely mentioning the border crisis and China’s global ambitions.
Biden’s refrain was “Let’s finish the job!” Given his track record, it’s not clear Americans will take him up on the offer.
