The Trump administration notched another win at the Supreme Court last week. The Court stayed a lower court’s ruling, which had blocked the president from revoking protected status to half a million migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. This decision paves the way for these immigrants to be removed from the United States.
A district court judge had barred DHS from terminating the program without providing a case-by-case review for each of the half million illegal immigrants. An appeals court refused to stay that holding. The Supreme Court’s decision is a welcome one, but it shouldn’t be surprising. Executive power is at its zenith when it comes to managing foreign policy, which encompasses immigration.
What’s more, the holding is really the bare minimum in interpreting immigration law. By removing those in our country illegally, the Trump administration is simply enforcing the laws as written.
