INTRO:
Cabinet is hopeful that South Africa will reach a trade deal with the US soon, with the aim of avoiding the 30-percent tarriff increase expected to be imposed on the conutry's goods from today (08/08). Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said this while briefing the media in Pretoria on the outcome of cabinet meetings held on the 22nd of July and 6th of August. Ntshaveni said that President Cyril Ramaphosa is committed to reach a deal as soon as possible, to avert the tariffs which it is estimated will impact on 30-thousand jobs across all sectors of the economy. She says the lines of communication with the US remain open, with Ramaphosa and his US counterpart Donald Trump speaking on the phone as recently as yesterday.
