INTRO:
Embattled Executive Mayor of the Polokwane Municipality in Limpopo, John Mpe, says there is a political campaign within the ANC as well other political parties to smear his name. Mpe reacted to the withdrawal of an urgent application to compel him to provide documents related to some transactions. The Hawks withdrew an urgent application for access to information, which was filed last Thursday and was set to be heard today. HAWKS spokesperson, Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, however says they won't comment as engagements with relevant parties are still on-going. Mpe has been making headlines since a concerned resident circulated documents on social media alleging that over 750-million-rand has been irregularly paid to companies whose owners have close ties to Mpe and municipal manager, Thuso Nemugumoni. Meanwhile MEC for Co-operative Governance, Basikopo Makamu, has given Mpe until Friday to provide a report regarding the allegations levelled against him. Mpe maintains that the allegations have been spearheaded by his disgruntled comrades within the ANC, in collaboration with opposition parties.Meanwhile, Action SA has opened acriminal case against Mpe at the Polokwane police station. The Party's chairperson, Victor Mothemela, says they have sufficient evidence to assist the police. And the ANC is yet to comment on the matter.
