With unemployment among youth standing at 46 percent, President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged the private sector to help curb scourge of youth unemployment. He was speaking at the 50th commemoration of the June 16 Soweto Uprising -- now National Youth Day -- in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Despite gains made by the democratic government to change their lives, five decades later young people are grappling with the challenges of unemployment and lack of economic opportunities. But, President Ramaphosa says business can help absorb young people to help them realise their dreams and potential.

Some of the young members of Parliament say that it is frustrating to get youth matters on the table because there are so few of them. The seventh Parliament has a very low percentage of MPs under the age of 39.
Only 20 per cent of MPs fall between the ages of 20 to 39. The most common age group in the national legislature are between40 and 59, while 22 per cent of MPs arebetween 60 and 69. ActionSA MP, Malebo Kobe, says to fully push the agenda of the youth, a caucus should be established.
