FOCUS:POLICE MINISTER SENZO MCHUNU TESTIFIED BEFORE PARLIAMENT

INTRO:  Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is placed on special leave, says he became aware of the Political Killings Task Team operating in KwaZulu-Natal, before he became the Minister. Mchunu is the fourth witness testifying at the Ad Hoc Commiittee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system. The allegations were made by KwaZulu Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi during a media briefing in July this year. Mchunu says he did everything by the book when disbanding the PKTT. Abongwe Kobokana compiled and Rhulani Mzamani reports .....

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says police top brass decided on a new structure last year that incorporated political killings under serious and violent crimes. Mchunu, has been placed on special leave following allegations of political interference. Mchunu is appearing before Parliament's Ad Hoc committee. He told the committee that the new structure was in line with the priorities of the seventh administration. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says he received a lot of support from the management of the South African Police Service when he was appointment. He is the fourth witness before the Parliament's Ad Hoc Committee looking into concerns of national security. Mchunu, who has been placed on special leave, was appointed as Police Minister after last year's general elections. Mchunu elaborates. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says when the department's structure was drafted for the new administration, there were no requests to include the Political Killings Task Team. As a result, they proceeded with a structure that excluded the PKTT. Mchunu who has been placed on special leave highlighted this as one of the reasons he decided to disband the PKTT. Testifying before Parliament's Ad Hoc Committee, Mchunu reiterated that task teams are not meant to be permanent.
