Starting from April 1, 2026, fuel prices and electricity tariffs have increased significantly. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced that petrol prices have gone up by R3.06 per litre for both grades. Diesel prices have also risen by between R7.37 and R7.51 per litre. The biggest jump is seen in illuminating paraffin, which has increased by R11.67 per litre, the largest recorded increase so far. At the same time, electricity prices went up. Direct Eskom customers will faced an 8.76% increase in their electricity tariffs from April 1, 2026. Another increase of 8.83% is scheduled for April 2027. For municipal customers, the increases will start on July 1, 2026. These hikes are caused by regulatory adjustments worth R54 billion and will put extra pressure on households and businesses. This situation is expected to affect the cost of living for many South Africans.

The National Taxi Association, NTA , has warned motorist especially taxi drivers to put safety first. The association has activated its Easter Safety Campaign across the country. High traffic volumes are expected to rise during the day as travelers are making their way to religious gatherings and holidays.

Gauteng's new MECs are set to be sworn in today. Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced their appointments in a cabinet reshuffle last night. The EFF's Nkuluko Dunga is now the Finance MEC, while former finance MEC, Lebogang Maile will head the Education Department, replacing
Matome Chiloane. Lesufi told the media in Johannesburg yesterday that the aim of the reshuffle was to stabilise local government and grow the provincial economy.
