This October marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/Commission). To commemorate this milestone, the SAHRC
will host a symposium to critically reflect on its legacy today (Wednesday) at NH Hotel Sandton, Johannesburg. Under the theme ''30 Years of Courage: Defending Human Rights, Dignity, Justice and Democracy for All'', the symposium will bring together members of the public, chapter 9s, academia, government, civil society and NGOs to critically reflect on how the Commission has fared in discharging its mandate to promote, protect and monitor human rights in South Africa.

INTRO: The uMkhonto weSizwe Party member Colleen Makhubele has resigned from Parliament. She was the party's chief whip. In a letter addressed to party leader and former South African president, Jacob Zuma, Makhubele stated that after careful consideration she believes her resignation as MP would be in the best interest of the MKP caucus and that she may be of better service in a different capacity. The letter states that her resignation will take effect at the end of February and does not mention intent to leave the party as a whole.

INTRO: Limpopo has seen an increase in murder cases, while other forms of crime have decreased.  Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, released the crime statistics in Polokwane, following the tabling of the national crime statistics last week.  This covers the third quarter period between October and December 2025.  Hadebe says while the increase in the murder rate is a concern, it's important to note that, overall, contact crimes continued their downward trend when compared to the previous period.
