The Independent Electoral Commission has today, 21 September 2026, opened applications for special votes for the 2026 Local Government Elections, in line with the Election Timetable. Voters who qualify for a special vote have until Monday, 12 October 2026 at 17h00 to submit their applications. Special votes are meant to ensure access to the vote by persons who would otherwise not be able to participate in elections on 4 November 2026.

Gauteng police have arrested ten suspects and recovered nine firearms following a shootout in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg. They say the suspects opened fire on officers during a pursuit yesterday (Monday). Two suspects fled on foot, while a third was shot dead. The suspects are expected to face charges including murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, murder and attempted robbery. Gauteng police spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko says the incident started when officers spotted a suspicious vehicle fitted with blue lights and a siren.
