Former President Thabo Mbeki is calling for a change on how South Africa chooses its president. He spoke at an event at Nelson Mandela University over the weekend. Currently, voters don't pick the president directly. Instead, they vote for political parties, which then fill 400 seats in the National Assembly. The members of Parliament (MPs) then choose the president from among themselves. Mbeki said this system doesn't ensure that the president is qualified. He believes the president should be someone with the right skills and abilities. Mbeki pointed out that when he was chosen as president, the Parliament didn't really know if he was capable of doing the job. He also said that the National Dialogue should discuss this issue. He thinks South Africa needs to change how it picks its president to make sure the best person is chosen.
