Police in Mpumalanga have clarified the number of illegal miners that were arrested at the Sheba gold mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga, yesterday. They say more than 400 suspected illegal miners were arrested after earlier reports put the figure at nearly one-thousand. The arrests were made during a police-led Operation Val' Umgodi. The miners were forced to surface after food supplies ran dry. Police say most of those arrested are undocumented migrants who face charges of contravening the Immigration Act as well as illegal mining.
