It appears Winston Peters has once again sparked a media pile-on, after telling a migrant MP to "go back to your own country" - apparently in response to the MP's interjection during Rt Hon. Peters' address to Parliament.

 

A civil liberties advocate acknowledges it was a regrettable moment of 'tit-for-tat', as Speaker of the House Rt Hon. Gerry Brownlee put it. PILLAR's Arian Tashakkori said Parliamentary heckling reflects a broader culture of outrage in national politics and public discourse, likewise condemning the mock beheading of Peters in effigy. He compares the New Zealand First leader's knee-jerk retort, and the legal yet destructive and premeditated protest effigy, calling for better standards of behaviour amongst our leaders as well as citizenry.
