Commentator and NZ Herald columnist Jonathan Ayling joins Andrew Urquhart to unpack two late-campaign controversies: the earlier-than-usual electoral enrolment cut-off, and Labour's eleventh-hour Kāinga Ora rent-to-own housing policy. He pushes back on claims from Chlöe Swarbrick and Trevor Mallard that tightening enrolment deadlines amounts to "voter suppression," arguing genuine democracy requires citizens take responsibility for enrolling, and that enrolment numbers remain strong despite the change.

Ayling also challenges Labour campaign chair Kieran McAnulty's claim that there's "no pathway" for Kāinga Ora tenants to own homes, noting a rent-to-buy scheme already exists, and argues McAnulty's "bootstraps" dismissal reflects a worrying shift from empowering the working poor towards state dependency. Drawing on the Christian roots of New Zealand's welfare state under Michael Joseph Savage and Peter Fraser, he contends genuine care for the poor means expanding opportunity through education rather than assuming they can't help themselves.
