For a long time, the South African economy has been in a growing crisis, whose origins lie in the 2008 global financial crisis, which was made much worse by the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
As a result, over the past few years we have had several neoliberal austerity measures imposed on us, which saw levels of employment, poverty and social inequalities rise further, and related to all that, an unprecedented cost of living crisis, especially of food prices.
