A regional Victorian community is placing local woodland birds in the spotlight.

Connecting Country, Birdlife Castlemaine, and Castlemaine Field Naturalist Club have organised the week-long Feathery Festival.

It gets underway tomorrow and is planned to centre around National Threatened Species Day, marked on 7 September.

Last week, a 55-year-old man was charged with the murder of his 85-year-old mother in Tasmania.

However, the case will not be considered a family violence incident under the state’s law because of its narrow definition of ‘family violence’
