Greens leader Senator Larissa Waters has stepped down from her role, citing health reasons.

Waters has been managing a pre-existing kidney condition, which she says has declined significantly in recent months.

She says the demands of leading the Greens, have made it difficult to prioritise her recovery.

Waters will take medical leave, but plans to return to parliament when she is well enough.

The Greens are now looking for a new leader as the 2028 federal election nears.
