The utility says the maintenance will focus on critical electrical and pumping infrastructure at the Palmiet and Zuikerbosch systems to improve long-term water supply reliability and reduce the risk of system failures.

One of the experts said Africa's debt crisis should not be viewed only through economic indicators, but through its impact on ordinary citizens

At least 32 African countries now spend more on debt servicing than on healthcare, exposing the growing human cost of the continent's worsening debt crisis, experts said on Wednesday at the opening of the sixth edition of the AFRODAD Media Initiative (AFROMEDI VI) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Malabo continues to host U.S. deportees despite court order

Under an opaque $7.5 million deal with the Trump administration, Equatorial Guinea's all-powerful president, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has turned one of the hotels owned by his family into a prison for asylum seekers deported from the United States.

President João Lourenço listened to the concerns of religious leaders, traditional authorities, youth representatives and local businesspeople from Mbanza Kongo city, in northern Zaire province, as part of the president's 48-hour working visit to the region, which started yesterday.

During the meetings, participants presented concerns related to education, road rehabilitation, access to drinking water, electricity, fuel, housing, job creation and financing for young entrepreneurs.The Head of State received in audience the provincial secretary of the Council of Christian Churches in Angola (CICA), Mayenzamene, having praised the President's gesture in decreeing national mourning for the victims of the political conflict of May 27, 1977.

4.    Ethiopia – Addis Ababa Ethiopia decides 2026 

In Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, it is hard to tell whether an election will take place on Monday to decide the next five years of Africa's second-most-populous country. Several international media groups have been denied entry to cover the election, and Ethiopia has slipped to 148th out of 180 countries in Reporters Without Borders' Press Freedom Index.

Results are due on June 11.

5.    In our historical archives, it was on this day, 29 May 2005, when Hamilton Naki, a laboratory assistant to cardiac surgeon Christian Barnard, died.

Hamilton Naki was a gardener who later became a laboratory assistant without any formal training. He first worked for Robert Goetz, who asked him to assist in the laboratory rather than in gardening. Having started by assisting with the animals and cleaning cages, Naki later began anaesthetising them and assisting with surgeries.
