diversifying beyond oil and gas

After decades of heavy reliance on oil and gas, Algeria is seeking to diversify its economy by expanding industry, agriculture, services and mining.

Early signs of progress are emerging. In 2024, non-hydrocarbon activity grew by 4.8%, with growth reaching 5.4% in the first half of 2025. The government is focusing on sectors including agri-food, manufacturing, infrastructure and mining, while seeking to attract more private investment.

2. Mozambique – Maputo 

 Opposition Leader Venâncio Mondlane to be Tried for Treason 6 October

Venâncio Mondlane has been charged with treason for his role in the demonstrations November 2024-March 2025 protesting the fraudulent elections of 9 October 2024. More than 350 demonstrators were killed by police, who have not been charged. More than 1000 demonstrators are improperly still being held in jail without trial.

1. Zimbabwe- Harare 

'I Will Still Be Around', Mnangagwa Hints At Staying in Power Until 2035

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has hinted at staying in power beyond 2030, declaring that he will "still be around" in nine years.

His remarks come barely a month after his second and final term in office was extended from 2028 to 2030 following the passage of Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3). Mnangagwa was speaking at the ongoing Sanganai/Hlanganani Zimbabwe World Tourism Expo being hosted in Masvingo.

1. In our historical archives, it was on this day, 11 September 1987, when one of the most iconic and revolutionary figures in reggae music, Peter Tosh, was brutally murdered.  

Known for his unapologetic advocacy for human rights, Tosh had long been a voice of resistance against oppression. His tragic death at the hands of a man he had once tried to help shocked not only the music world but the wider global community.
