1. Zambia – Lusaka
President Hakainde Hichilema secures another five years in power after defeating Brian Mundubile, but opposition allegations, arrests and observer concerns cast a shadow over the result.

The result, however, comes against the backdrop of a bitter dispute with Mundubile, 55, who had claimed victory before the official declaration and alleged discrepancies between results recorded at polling stations and figures subsequently announced. He also raised allegations of military involvement at tallying centres.
2. Ethiopia- Tigray
Authorities in Ethiopia's Tigray region have accused the federal government of launching a drone strike near the state capital, Mekelle.
In a statement on social media, Tigrayan authorities said the drone hit a farmer training centre in Dandera village, some 15 kilometres outside the city.The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which governs the state, said there were no injuries and provided no further details.

In our historical archives, it was on this day, 19 August 1998, when the South African TRC released documents revealing a plot to kill the United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold of Sweden. The documents were disclosed in TRC meetings with the South African Institute for Maritime Research (SAIMR, thought to be an SA Defence Force front company) and linked M15 (United Kingdom Security Services), Special Operations Executive, and the CIA to "Operation Celeste", the alleged mission to kill Hammarskjold.
