West African Leaders Back $25b Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline

West African leaders have endorsed the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, providing political backing for a $25 billion project to transport natural gas across West Africa and into Europe as the continent seeks to strengthen energy security and expand regional integration.

The planned 6,800-kilometre pipeline will connect Nigeria to Morocco via 13 West African countries, then link with the existing Maghreb-Europe Gas Pipeline to Spain. Project developers will establish a dedicated company in Casablanca and a higher coordinating authority in Abuja to oversee financing and prepare for a final investment decision.

Africa overtakes Asia as the world's hunger hot spot, UN report finds

Conflicts and disruptions to global energy markets could push millions more people into hunger by driving up fuel, fertiliser and food costs, the head of the Rome-based International Fund for Agricultural Development warned, as a new UN report showed that global progress against hunger remains fragile.

The UN food security report, released Tuesday, found that global hunger has eased modestly in recent years, but projected that more than 500 million people could still face chronic hunger by 2030.

South Afrika – Ethekweni- SADC Summit 2026

The Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre Complex (ICC) ablution facility will get an R11.9 million upgrade ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa's visit to Durban in August.

Ramaphosa will attend the 46th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit of Heads of State and Government from August 3 to 18, 2026.

The Durban ICC will also host the SADC industrialisation week between July 27-31. In a briefing to the Executive Committee (EXCO), the municipality presented the city's readiness to host these strategic regional events successfully.
