As cold, dark November weather sets in, Brian From admits his least favorite part of every election: the flood of social media gloating and lamenting afterward, which has him logging off for the week. He turns to a more serious result, the abortion measures on several state ballots, where pro-choice measures largely won in Virginia, Nevada, and Missouri, and repeats that protecting life is ultimately a heart and church issue, not just a policy fight. Drawing on ESPN’s Nick Saban documentary, in which the legendary coach asked “Is this all there is?” after winning a national title, Brian connects that emptiness to Ecclesiastes and our need for the eternal. As his youngest daughter visits colleges, he reflects on trusting God through seasons of uncertainty. He walks through Luke 15’s parables of the lost sheep, lost coin, and lost son, highlighting a Father full of grace toward both sons. He closes with a Charles Stanley devotional on the peace with God that is found not in the absence of conflict, but in God’s presence.

The idea of “the common good” has a rich history within the Christian church. It’s the notion that, as we pursue Jesus in our lives and in the lives of others, we are fulfilling God’s purposes for His creation. This pursuit can be messy. It means rolling up our sleeves and creating space for hard conversations about real issues that impact our lives. Things like parenting, marriage, finances, politics, art, and culture. On The Common Good, Brian From creates space to have these conversations, to sit with the big questions that we all have, to sometimes disagree, but to always look for the chance to create common good, by following after Jesus. Brian welcome listeners to join them in these conversations, to bring their own questions, hopes, and struggles, and to ultimately share in a journey to see God’s design for all of us fulfilled.
