The World Game with Stefan Mauk - 30 January 2025

Published Jan 30, 2025, 8:37 AM

From the A-Leagues to the EPL, Adelaide United star Stefan Mauk brings you the latest results, news and analysis from the World Game.

This is the World Game with Stefan Mork thanks to Football Essay bringing South Australian communities together.

Always great to have your company here on Thursday night.

It's time to talk all things in the World Game and this thanks to Southern Cherry. You can receive up to two thousand dollars worth of gift card with vehicle purchases at Southern Cherry's twenty twenty four plate clearance sale.

My name is Sam Tugwell.

With me, of course, is the one and only Stephan Morc who joins us every week.

Stefan, Great to see you mate.

Now, I'm very happy to be here. Feeling a bit strange because we're obviously not going to talk too much about Adelaide United because we had the weekend off.

How does a feel We've had a very long break. Last game was last Wednesday?

Yeah, it was.

It was the thrilling to to draw with Auckland. Obviously there was a lot to talk about. I think you know, probably seventy percent of the show last week was about that, and then yeah, we we fortunately, I guess had I guess fortunately unfortunately.

Have you want to look at that.

I guess we had the weekend off because the game that we're meant to play against Brisbane raw scheduled because of a concert, so that wasn't wasn't great. Now we've got them at the towards the end of the season, so we've had the week off. We've just been able to sit back and watch the teams. Friday night was Sydney FC away to Melbourne Victory, which is actually a really exciting game, but we were tuning in a little bit more specifically because we've got Sydney FC.

This week and they're struggling.

They're playing okay, they've got top players Douglas Costa, who put on a show against us here in Adelaide. He's still out injured. I'm not sure if we'll be back for this one. But Victory, who had also been struggling under their new coach Arthur Dillis hadn't won with him, got the three points with the two nil wins.

So one of them obviously was very happy.

The other one is not so happy and kind of makes it a dangerous game, I reckon because you've got.

A team that's been losing.

Yes, maybe they're down in confidence, but also they're probably looking at us thinking well, this is the benchmark, you know, one of the top teams. We can beat them and tell everyone in the competition that where we're still a good side.

Yeah, absolutely, So you've got your squad out for the game. Josh Cavallo comes in for ben Fulami. He's pulled up with a bit of souna, so he won't be featuring on Saturday afternoon. But I suppose you're refreshed as a team.

Would that be about right?

Yeah?

Yeah, I think we are well have you done with this spell? We had what are we here? Saturday? Saturday and Sunday off.

So I went down to Selex Beach for Australia Day, which was really nice. So Sunday was nice down there, pretty good weather. And then halfway through the day, my son is only just over one. He was tired, he was destroyed.

So we'll let you know. It's getting a bit windy.

We'll go home.

The weather's not looking great.

And then the second half of the day I think the weather actually turned out to be better. So I was sitting at home in my lounge and thinking I would have loved to have been at the beach.

Still, come on, but that's a show mate, it's a big show coming up. We got the ua FA Champions League. The league phase is complete, so we had a lot to talk about there and catch up on if you haven't seen the English Premier League, a little bit of the latest around that. And you're still alive, which is a great thing. Our special guest tonight, I love you to tell us about our guests from the Reds.

Yeah.

So it's a young boy, Fabian Talladeera so a famous name, I guess in South Australia.

His dad was a professional professional player in the NFL for Adelaide City.

Fabian played for Adelaide City as a junior and now he's obviously with Adelaide United and he's been away with I think the under seventeen Australia before the under twenties and recently just been selected to go and represent the under twenty team with Johnny Yule Luka Yovanovich and who is the last one.

That's the one.

So we're down four players, which is great because they get to go and play for their national team, but we could be losing them for I think it's up to you know, three, three to five weeks because they go and have a camp in Japan. I think which Fabian can tell us a little bit about, and then they've got their group stage games they need to make the semi finals. The top four teams qualify for the Under twenty World Cup, so it's an amazing opportunity. I loved doing it when I was younger enough to be in those squads, but for the A League team, especially now a lot of A League teams are playing young players. It's you know, four players that were not able to choose, so we're just going to have to rely on I guess the depth of the squad or some other young boys coming through.

Well, Fabian's in the squad for this weekend, so it'd be great if we could get.

Him on the field at some point.

But he's yet to play at nineteen years of age in the A League, so of course seeing him in country year colors will be fantastic as well. Let's quickly talk around the A League and what's happened in the last seven eights since we've last been here. One of the movers and shakers, Adelaide you not unfortunately lose their top spot. Auckland has taken a win in the last week to take back top spot.

Exactly and it was another game that we know it probably I watch pretty much all the games, but specifically Auckland because I was hoping they were going to lose, and obviously Sydney because we've got the next up. But they just keep scoring late goals. It's incredible. I think they've scored I think it's close to ten goals after the eightieth minute. I saw someone put a stat on X the other day saying that if they hadn't scored any goals after the eightieth minute, they would be in fourth position in the league. So it goes to show the resilience in the team, the belief that they've got. So anytime you know that there'sre's a chance to win or draw a game, they're in it. And it's the signs of a really good side, which is great. Great for them, not great for us obviously, who we're trying to take top spot off them now, but it's good for the competition. I'm really happy for them and for Western Sydney. It's another extremely disappointing result at home against Auckland, who had played the previous Saturday at home in Auckland. They traveled to Adelaide to play Wednesday, then they had to travel to Sydney to play Sunday, so they were tired.

I assume they were tired.

But they didn't look at and Western Sydney were the ones that actually looked really fatigued. They were the ones that were struggling. And for a big club like that, you know, with the players that they've got, you know they're well outside the top six and it's it's a bit of a shock because at the start of the season a lot of the pundits were tipping, you know, your Sydney FC's, your Western Sydney's and your Victory to be at the top, and none of those sides are obviously making up those top three four spots. And like I've said before, everyone tips Adelaide to Probaly. He missed the six and we're doing all right. So that's funny how it works obviously with those predictions. But probably some of the most exciting news besides on the field has been the transfer window. And it's the mid season transfer window, so in Australia. Obviously each country has a different transfer window, so they can choose when they're going to be open for how long it's going to be.

For most of them are pretty basic.

Opens on the first of January and we'll go until the thirty first of January.

Australia is a bit different.

I think we open maybe the fourteenth or fifteenth and go to the fourteenth and fifteenth of February. Different places are all different, like I said, but we've had a few players that have actually moved on and the latest one that's been confirmed is Jed Drew and he's had a bit of a breakout season. He's been around for probably the last three years with MacArthur Bulls. He's a local boy from the Area's come in through their academy. I believe his dad was potentially a rugby league player, very quick back in his day, and.

Jed Drew is extremely quick as well.

And he's got six goals and seven assists in thirteen games, so there's no surprise that there was teams interested in him.

And he's just flown off to.

Austria to sign for TSV Hartburg. So congrats to him, Congrats to MacArthur obviously. You know that's the thing with obviously the A League. Yes, we want to keep our best players, but also we have to understand, especially when they're young, we're bringing them in to then on sell them and there's been no transfer fee that have been said about him at the moment. But they've lost three players now in the last ten days. So they've lost Piol who's a local Adelaide boy. Actually he went to Rail Salt Lake for a rumored five hundred thousand US which is about eight hundred and eight to fifty Australian, so it's good money and they just recently lost as well.

They're young center back who, to be honest, Oliver Jones.

When we played against him it was the first time I'd probably noticed him as much. He doesn't played eight games this season and he's moved to Randers in Denmark for two hundred and forty thousand euros. So some really positive news, I guess, in terms of young players getting a chance to play in the A League, which is what we want, and then overseas leagues recognizing that there's talented players here so they can actually get a chance to go overseas, because that's what's going to help the next five or ten players come through is paying for the academy, which is not a cheap exercise. So that's essentially what these not saying we are a selling league. But every league in the world besides the Premier League and even the Premier League to be honest, unless you're Manchester City Arsenal. I've said it before, Chelsea Liverpool. Those teams maybe.

Don't sell players.

Everybody else sells players if someone pays big money. You know, Arsenal are bidding for Olie Watkins from Uston Villa sixty pounds. They've said no, but if they come in at eighty million, maybe they say yes. So it's not saying that Austin Villa are selling club, but everybody's got their price. And some of the other big incomings for the league Locke Jackson's return from careers signed with Melbourne Victory. Hayden Matthews, which is the biggest transfer, is a young center back from Sydney FC. He signed at Portsmouth for one point five million euros and I think it works out to be close to two and a half million Australian dollars, just under that. So for a young boy. I think he's played twenty games. He started about January last year for Sydney f C. He came through their academy. One of the first I think intakes there so what a proud moment for him and for the club to show the pathway for future players to be like, listen, we're going to give you a chance to play at our club, which is what Adelaide United has done so well.

It's great to see some other teams doing that as well.

That is outstanding. So some big moves.

It's going to continue on the transfer window Feb twelve, so still a couple of weeks for it. The player in the A League Rock. Just before we get to a break, we have a guest on the line, Stefan who you'd love to introduce one of your teammates.

Yes, we do have Fabian Taladeira, who I call Zinchenko because he plays very much like Zimchenko from Arsenal.

A left footed full back midfielder. Thanks for joining us, teller.

Yeah, thank you. Hey, guys, I tell.

You we're good.

We're very good.

But talk to us a little bit about your your career so far at Adelaide United. Obviously there's probably a lot of people listening that maybe don't know you too well at the moment.

You've been in a few.

Squads, but how long have you been at the club for and what was your junior club before that. Yep.

So I came in Tolle United's youth team three years ago now, and previously to that, I was at Allaide City from under sixers all the way up until I played a bit of reserves there, but I was left there when I was fourteen fifteen.

Yeah.

Wow, So you've obviously been part of the setup since I've come back in the last year or so. You've been involved with the first team with everything we've been doing.

And was Wellington.

The first game a few weeks back that you were involved with a squad?

Yes, yes, so Wellington was the first game, first a league match I was involved in on the bench.

Yeah.

So good, good experience with that.

Exciting and hopefully, you know, in the not too near future you get a step onto the park, which I'm sure has been a dream of yours. But how hard has it been, I guess, you know, for for some of the listeners, maybe there's some kids out there or some parents that have got kids coming through. How hard has it been, I guess from the youth team to come up to the first team and just to be able to train at that level. And you know, you've gone from probably being one of the best players in you know, your youth squad's at Adelaide City and then the youth team to now you're fighting against grown men.

Yeah, of course, it's it's always a challenge. I think that's the part of the game. But it's something where you've got to enjoy the hard work and you've got to enjoy the sort of grind to get to where you are. And then wherever you are, whether it's at your age now me now, you've still got to be working hard because there's always someone coming for your position and someone maybe in front of you or below you that is trying to take it from you.

Yeah.

No, you're you're spot on there.

And I'm sure with your dad being a professional player and Adelaide City legend back in the day, he's been giving you some good advice.

Is as you know he has.

He been someone that you've gone to all the time to ask for that advice or he's kind of stayed clear and let you just do your own thing.

Yeah, of course, a bit of both. I go to him every now and then. He's always got something to say to me. But nah, yeah, he's been he's been a big influence of sort of the player I am and the person I am obviously being my dad. But no, it's it's very good to have him literally right next to me. Always can ask him whenever I need and he's always there to help.

Yeah, no, it's incredible.

I think we're We've had so many players come through recently in the last five six years that you know, their parents, their dad has been a professional. And now obviously you coming through, and I think the most exciting thing is you know, you come through and you paved the way for you know, Fabian Talladeira to be the player that you want to be. And yes, it's great that obviously you had your your dad he was a professional. But similar with you know, with Ethan with his dad Richie. It's great for them to mention it, but you know, people, people need to now focus on you because that's something that we always joke around about with with with Ala at the training ground and he I think Richie haets to mention just about the same as what Ethan does. So I'm sure when you break through the same thing's going to happen. So you just need to tell them, Dora about my dad, worry about Fabian. I'm the I'm the new Talladeerra. But before we do, let you go, I want to talk about this upcoming Asian Cup that's being held in China. So you've been selected in the squad, which is amazing. Who are you playing in the three games? And what do you need to do to qualify and what do you think your chances are of that for the World Cup?

Yes, so our group stage games, we've got host nation China in our group, We've got Qatar and Kazakhstan.

Yeah.

To get out of that group, we or top two goes through to the quarterfinals and then you win. Basically you win the quarterfinals and you qualify for the World Cup.

Yeah, yeah, brilliant.

Well fingers crossed that that does happen. I think the last few teams haven't qualified. Unfortunately when I was when I was your age, we didn't qualify. We we lost, we lost when we were away at the Asian Cup and didn't didn't make it. And it's such a I guess I set back for that group of players because you it's it's the experience, but it's also it means that your camp stop. Obviously for that age group, you know, the funding is not there for it, so you know, it's great for you individually. It's great for the country obviously because if you can go away and get that experience at a World Cup, the amount of scouts that are there, but just playing against these other nations, for you, it's going to help you in your career and.

I think you.

Guys will be better better equipped for this, just because back when I was playing, there wasn't many players that were playing any a league football at or maybe a couple of us got some minutes here or there where Now we have majority of the squad playing a league minutes. So fingers crossed, you do qualify for the World Cup? Where is it actually being held?

The World Cup? And when is that?

The World Cup is at the end of this year, and I believe it's in South America, I think Chile.

Yeah well okay, well that's exciting.

Not not a bad place to go, but yeah, fingers fingers crossed, you do, you'll go away and do Adelaide United proud, which I I know you will. I'll see you tomorrow at training and then we'll have a nice couple of days away in Sydney.

Yeah, thank you. Cheers.

Fabian Talladeera are they're from Adelaide United, who's of course a fantastic edition for the Adelaide side the last couple of years. But we want to get him on the park so I'd be lovely to see him very soon as well. In of course red but Green and Gold. And if you want to see Adelaide United in action, they playing their next home game on Friday night next week against Melbourne City. You can receive up to a two thousand dollars gift card with vehicle purchase at Southern Cherry's twenty twenty four plate clearance sale. We've done a lot of talking about what's been happening inside our borders in Australia. It's time to go around the world and let's start maybe with the UAFA Champions League.

So much happening.

This new format has been a lot of fun. The league phase is complete, we've got the top eight confirmed with the final match day of this morning, which was absolutely hectic. But what's also hectic is what's coming next. Please walk me through this step and it's confusing.

To be honest, I think you do need a degree to understand the format of what they've decided. I love what they've actually done with this because normally in the Champions League it comes to the last game week, let's say game week five, game week six. Yeah, you kind of know what's happening because the top two teams are going through, the bottom two don't go through, and it's pretty much set in stone already, where this one was maybe game Week's one, and to everyone was excited. Then there was a bit of a lull in the middle because you're just looking at this table of what is it, thirty odd teams.

It's a message sixteen.

Thirty six teams you're like, what is this.

Then the last two game weeks you're thinking, okay, wow, like these teams might miss out, this one might be top eight, which means they go through. So it's actually been really exciting and we've ended up with the top eight teams were Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal Into, Athletico Madrid, bio Levicusen Lil and Austin Villa. But I was watching a lot of these games this morning and the goal rush was on, so you could be watching it on stand and every time there was a goal, it'd flicked to that new game, right, and what that meant for the table was ridiculous because you ended up with bio levicusin on sixteen points in sixth and all the way down to thirteenth is milan Ac on fifteen points, so there's one point between fifth and thirteenth. So obviously, if one team's winning, they end up drawing losing. It's changing it dramatically.

It's crazy.

And down the other end, which was the biggest surprise I guess about this was Manchester City was struggling and they needed to beat Club Bruses.

I said this last week they needed to beat Club Bruce.

To go through at halftime they were one kneel down to Club Bruses, so all they needed to Club Bruge was get a draw out of that game and they were confirmed they.

Were going to go through.

Club Bruges ended up going through anyway, but they lost three one to man City, So man City now go through in twenty second seeded spot.

Wow.

But what this means now is it's going to be very confusing for your listeners trying to make this out, so you might want to jump on Google and type in the draw. But pretty much it means for Manchester City they are now in a pool off. So twenty two and twenty one ranked teams, which is Manchester City and Celtic. Their draw tomorrow they're going to be either playing Real Madrid or Buying Munich.

So it means Manchester City.

Get a blockbuster e the way, I'm going to play Rum Madrid or buying Munich in the I don't even know what you're going to call this this next knockout phase. It's pretty crazy as one leg is two legs two legs. So now if you're realm Madrid or Buying you're thinking, well, we finished eleventh or twelfth, which is Okay, not great, and now we have to play against Manchester City so it's a disaster for them. But they are going to be doing the raw tomorrow, so that's the whole way through, ninth to twenty fourth, ninth and tenth obviously seated together, twenty fourth, twenty third, and it goes.

The whole way through.

So I think they've just done this for a little bit of drama so they can do a draw.

It's like a really if you think about the NBA terms, or it's like a giant playing like a really big one.

Instead of just.

A couple of teams playing off for the last spots in the top ten or so, they've gone a really big one, which is I suppose it's just trying to eliminate eight teams in batches. Yeah, because the bottom ended up being the bottom twelve eliminated from the league, but still twenty four teams that exists.

Exactly, and what this has done, I guess for I saw some people comment and say, oh, they're just favoring the bigger teams because it means even though Manchester City were terrible, they still get to go through.

But to be honest, I don't think it's about that.

I think it's more about actually giving the smaller clubs more games because in the normal format there's four teams in a group you play home and away, so there's there's only six games.

This is eight games you play.

Saying for home four away, you could get some giants that you're playing against obviously, but you might sneak through. And if you sneak through to this next round, you're getting a home and away leg, which is incredible. So I think overall, I've really enjoyed it. I think it will get better. Maybe they'll tweak it here and there, but you've got some smaller clubs. I'm not saying they're a tiny club, but a club brug to go through to this knockout phase normally wouldn't happen.

Recently, Celtic have been so far off it.

They're going through now in twenty first place and if they get obviously.

Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, that's massive for.

Them to get that at home, that will be rocking that stadium.

So it's good to see. I like it.

I'm excited to see even for me for my boys Arsenal, I'm gonna find out, I guess tomorrow what side of the draw they're on, so you can actually see if you log on and go on the UA for website, you can see all right, who's actually going to be playing Arsenal in that next round, so Arsenal into for example, third and fourth they're playing either Milan psv.

Juventus or finals, so whoever.

Wins out of those two teams will play into or Arsenal, So you can kind of see who you're teams are going to play, which is I think it's it's exciting because you can kind of see that. But it's great for the teams that deserve a week off or two weeks off because they get a few less games. So we'll see how that goes. No Aussie boys involved really at all. Austin Villa had a massive win over Celtic and they've gone through, which is great for them. But Joe Gauci, there has been rumors that he's going to be loaned out, so nothing's come through yet. But he wasn't on the bench on the weekend I saw, so there was another keeper on that. Normally he's over, so I assume he's trying to get a move out to get some game time, which is great. For him, but it will mean he'll miss out potentially on those Champions League nights.

That is a shame. So well, let's wish for the beast for Joe.

Obviously, whatever comes nixt will be he'll do a brilliant job at but he has been enjoying his time over there and we did get to chat to him on the show and we did a little while back when he was with the soccaos in town.

So best wishes to Joe. We've got about a minut left, so if you've got one minute worth of Premier League four a seven Premier League up, it's the number one thing you want to talk about, just quickly.

Number one thing is Ang Ange Boster conglu. To be honest, I could talk about the red card that was dished out.

To Arsenal and it was horrible and it would rescind it.

I need to calm down on that. It's been four or five days. I've spoken about it on a different podcast, so it's done. I'm forgetting about it. We won the game, it didn't matter. But Ange is in a world of bother and they play tomorrow in the Europa League. Obviously they should go through in that. You know, the top group of that, which is great for him. But in the Premier League they are winless in.

I think it's four or five at least.

Maybe to be honest, And they had Lester at home on the weekend, who are terrible to be They're they're horrible Lester, They're they're one of the newly promoted teams that they they're just not up to the standard. For me, the injuries that anch has, it's it's so horrible. And the craziest thing is, as I've said, the window's been open for about.

A month, almost thirty days.

They've brought in no players Tottenham and they've hardly got any fit players. So I think this is what Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho, Pochettino, all these ex Spurs managers spoke about, saying the club is not good. What's going on at the club. You're not going to win anything. What's been going around for years. Nothing's going to change unless you change something. They didn't say who it was. I'm assuming they're talking about the chairman and Daniel Levy and his mindset and what he's trying to achieve and and and for me, he's been getting thrown under the bus here and I was really happy to see today Kulesski, the winger, the Swedish winger for them, who's been on fire. He actually came out and backed and and said, listen, you can change the manager, you can change the players, but there's something else that's not right here and you can't blame us for that.

So to get that backing from a player.

Because you could imagine what the chairman's thinking when that goes out. He's under more pressure because they were chanting for his name, for him to get out of the club at the end of this last game as Ange as well.

But Daniel Levy is under pressure.

The easiest job for Daniel Levy to do is to suck ande take the pressure off him.

Horse he hasn't.

Doesn't make him any more popular.

Kulesski coming out and saying that, if anything, has given Ange a little bit more time.

So let's see if they bring in any players.

They've got a massive game this weekend and then they also have the second leg of the crab Our Cup against Liverpool semi final final game. Yes massive for them.

All right, well, we have run out of time.

I wish we could have continued, but Leith does have his show after the news coming up very quickly. But thank you so much for your company. Everybody always love having you. We'll be back next Thursday. Good luck on Saturday, Stefan, thank you and we will be back next Thursday six thirty
