From the A-Leagues to the EPL, Adelaide United star Stefan Mauk brings you the latest results, news and analysis from the World Game.
This is the World Game with Stefan Mork thanks to Football Essay bringing South Australian communities together. Twenty nine minutes to seven. Good evening. It is always great to have you on a Thursday night because it means we get to talk all things well.
Game here with the great man Stephan Mork who joins us all thanks to Football Essay, Stephan Moore.
Good evening, very happy to be here. Although this is the first time I've sat in this chair after.
A loss, weird, weird feeling. We'll get into all of that.
Lots to talk about tonight, of course, we invite you in your calls eight double two to three double double. Oh, We've got the lots of Premier League to talk about. We're up to match week six, we've got the soccer us with a new coach. Of course, we have a bit happening tomorrow night. We'll talk about Shortley Cooper's Stadium seeing a bit of an upgrade, and of course the Australia Cup Final this Sunday.
But let's dive straight into with Stephan.
A bit of a shame last Saturday night over in Melbourne, a loss to the victory, which means we're eliminated from the Cup.
Yeah, I think it was extremely disappointing on the night, especially after the game, probably even more so, what was it Monday or Tuesday when I was driving out to play for to our training base, and yeah, you just demoralized. I think we put in a really good performance. At the end of the day, performances don't get you trophies. You need to win the games. But overall we're extremely happy with that because it's more about the process, especially this time of the year. But you know, to get so close to being a Cup final, it's not easy to do that, and I thought we had the better of the chances. It was a pretty even game for or a one meal he was exciting, yeah, massively, but to copy it in the eighty eighth minute, you know, I thought we were going an extra time. I felt like we had the legs over them. Yeah, it was just a kick in the guts, and especially when it's against Melbourne. Victory, it just feels that much worse. And knowing now that they get to prepare for a final. We're now just got friendlies really before the season starts, and if you won that Cup final, you go straight into the Asian competitions for next season, so there was a lot on the line. We're disappointed with it, but we have to learn. We have to get better with obviously taking our chances, and yeah, just improved before.
Our first game of the season.
He hadn't conceded too many goals during the tournament either, so he'd done quite well defensively. But to let one sneak it a slip in really late in the game is a shame. And that's the difference between the win and the lost. Where did Carvi put it at the post match in terms of where you lost the game? Or was it just full of praise for how he had competed throughout the night.
Yeah, I think to be honest, we'd won the other games, and especially in the first two rounds, and he was probably more angry and disappointed in those games than what he was in this one because of how well we did play with the ball without the ball. We're extremely aggressive in all our actions. We won so many second balls, stuff that we had spoken about in the past that we needed to get better at we actually did. It was really just that final third strikers get paid the most amount of money for a reason, because goals are the hardest to score. I had a few chances that Cluff had a couple of us in a ub We had enough chances to score and win the game, but we didn't. We didn't take it, and it probably wasn't just that final shot. It was probably the combination play in that attacking third, which again it is difficult.
It's not the easiest part of the game.
But if you want to win games, you need to be creating good opportunities and then you need to take them. So it's something In these last three weeks, I think we'll definitely work a lot on and we have a bit of star power with Luka Jovanovic actually Goodwen Ben Falami all to come back in, which helps. But it didn't help us on tonight because they weren't there.
Of course, that's right, you can't win with that them on the party in some cases. But I think when the next couple of weeks, as we built up to the A League season starting, which is still a month away, we'll sort of go through and dissect the profile of Adelaide United and what we can expect in the season. But I do want to just ask for your first impressions on what you've seen from what is a preseason competition what the list looks like heading into the season. Because last year there's a lot of talk about it being very inexperienced, very young. We haven't come in with huge experience levels brought into the team. It's still relatively young, I suppose, But I'd love your take on where you think the list is at, how it's playing out through the last couple of weeks worth of games.
Yeah, I think probably the biggest thing that I've taken away. I came in halfway through last year, so it was hard for me to assess the situation. But the difference between last year's team and this year is I think obviously we had a lot of young players last year. We still do have a lot of young players. But I think those young players that are still here, they're a year older, so they're more mature. They understand what it's like to be in the A League system. They understand that what we put out last year wasn't good enough, wasn't acceptable. We finished outside the finals, so Adelaide, you know, should never do that. So we came in in pre season and we really set the tone of saying this is what it takes to win. We need to perform well at training every day. These are the standards. We need to work hard as a team. Yes, talent wise is great, and if we can score great goals, unbelievable. Doesn't matter if you're a defender or a midfield or attacker. But we need to be a team that runs hard, that fights for each other. If you do that side of the game in most sports, really you're going to go a long way. And that was something that we maybe went away from last year. And I think in every preseason game we've got better at that. That's great and if we can do that well, we know we've got quality players. We've going to create chances, it's just then taking them. But that kind of dirty stuff, which they're actually talking about Arsenal right now. The dark art's probably more so with but that dirty stuff of just wanting to win everything and not giving your player a second on the ball and not letting them get a cross in or blocking shots. All of those small little things we've really spoken about. We've tried to drive in in preseason and now we saw at firsthand that we were a lot better at it. We can still improve on it, but that's probably what we need to go back to, which is what we're so good at years gone by.
Yeah, I love all of that.
We'll go deeper into that as the weeks go by, as we close it on the season, because that's really great to hear in the preseason situation for Adelaide United side for twenty twenty four to twenty five. But of course the final is this Sunday, so unfortunately for US, no Red's featuring. It's Melbourne victory and MacArthur going at it. Both recently won Australia Cup titles too, so Melbourne looking for their first since twenty twenty one, it'd be the third overall and MacArthur only one one two years ago in twenty twenty two.
Yeah, it was probably on the other side of the drawer and how they've done it this year, which I've spoken about with the round of thirty two, you play those games and then from round of sixteen they preset the draw so whatever side of the drawer on, you know who you're going to play in the round of sixteen quarters, semis and then obviously in the final. Not taking anything away from MacArthur, but they definitely had the easier side of the drawer. I think they played an NPL team in the round of thirty two in Canberra. They then played Newcastle Jets after that. They've played now two NPL teams, both from Melbourne, so it's probably a simpler draw to get there. But in saying that you still got to beat him, they've done extremely well. They won one nil on the weekend. It was a penalty to Jermaine in the eighty odd minute, so they were probably devastated. The old NFL powerhouse then they were going to get into a final potentially and to have that happened to him was heartbreak in front of you four odd thousand people. And Melbourne Victory, who obviously beat us, you know, they've been building, they've got a new coach. I think they've had a pretty pretty good preseason similar to ours. To me, has won a lot of games, and I think based on Jermaine who scored the penalty for the balls, he then got sent off in the ninety eighth minute for a second yellow and he's probably their key player. I think that really does swing the tide in Melbourne Victory's favor because they've got a lot of injuries. Chris Economedes is another one that's injured. Harrison Sawyer, who they signed from South Melbourne, is cup tied. He can't play. I just think they're going to lack that star power in the front third and Melbourne Victory have that in abundance.
You know.
They had Bruno holner Oli who scored eighteen nineteen goals last year and for some reason he was on the bench and didn't even come on. So it shows you the depth they've got. I'm tipping them. I think they'll win too. New at home at Amy Park on a Sunday night, hopefully a massive crowd, a big, big weekend, in big weekend in Melbourne. Really obviously Grand Final, the NFL Grand Finals the biggest event probably, you'd say in Australia in the calendar sporting year probably, But to then have this on a Sunday at seven pm, they had to move it forward a week I think because the unavailability of Amy Park They've tried to accommodate obviously for broadcasts. It's a good time. Hopefully the fans will go out there support Melbourne Victory. Even though it hurts me to see being an Adelaide, you know, found I want that to be a big crowd obviously, and I think they'll get the job done and win. Not comfortably, but I think I think they'll win it a normal time to Neil Aurriicon.
We'll see how my prediction goes.
Yeah, I like that.
Well, it will be a massive game you can watch on It'll be terrific evening six forty the kickoff, so the Australia Cup Final. It will come to a close this Sunday night with two really big A League science going head to head. Speaking of crowds, and as we love here in Adelaide, we have the best crowds I think in the country, the best stadium in the country in Cooper Stadium. Massive upgrades for that over the weekend. We've heard for the last three months they've had a big injection of over fifty three million dollars to try and get it up to scratch before we get to it. Well not up to scratch, but I suppose just advanced yes ahead of the A League season because it was already voted the best stadium in the country. It's now officially South Australia's home of football and there's been so much outed to Cooper's.
Yes, so they obviously started back when they wanted to get the Women's World Cup. They did the other stand, they did some of the change rooms, which was magnificent, but there was probably still a few other things technology wise that was lacking in I think it's a bigger screen now they've got they've got the LED lights around the field. They've got more screens actually around the precinct, so if you're at the bar, you're in the toilets, probably there's other screens that you can actually watch that are allowing you to see the goals and don't miss any any moments. And then the pitch being relayed is the biggest one, so that I think allows them to play more games there. So we've got more double headers with the women's team. You know, we're trying to obviously grow women's sport, women's football. On the back of the Women's World Cup. It's showing that there is the interest, there's the girls that are playing it now. It's great playing at Marden or Jep's Cross where they've got the state of football there with FSA, but I think you want to play at Cooper Stadium. The girls would probably love that as well, So that's brilliant we appreciate that funding, especially after last week we spoke a little bit about what's going up in Brisbane, So I hope the fans will walk in there and you know, you're not going to see massive, massive changes, but it's enough and hopefully we keep progressing in that stadium, just keeps getting built upon, because there's still a whole lot more you can do. But for this moment in time, I think, you know, it's the improvements that were the war promised and delivered on.
Well, I think the little things, the minor details of things that matter, and the Red Army they were consulted, which is I think was the best part of this whole process.
And they've now got like a standing area.
For the two bays behind at the northern goals that is just terrifically simple. Bars have gone up so that you can stand upon them and you're not going to fall over each other on the seats, and it's just so smart, simple, But it makes a massive difference to those who want to get along and be a part of the.
Red Army sh the way they want to chee you exactly.
And I think that's something that in this country we're still struggling with how to police football fans over you know your AFL, you're in a row your cricket. For example, they do stand up in football. They want to chant, they want to have banners, they want to have the safe smoke, all of these things that they do in Europe that kind of makes the game so special. But we're kind of limited here, so to now give them this space. I think last year they were sometimes taping the seats, so that's not how it should be done obviously, So they've given them the safe standing. They's you said, they're consulted with the Red Army, which I think is the most important thing.
You want to keep your tenants happy.
Adelaide United the biggest tenant of Cooper Stadium, and the Red Army are our twelfth man, are backbone, and there's been that many times we've scored last minute winners or equalizers down that end. So I'm hoping this will actually increase the amount of numbers down there and hopefully they can get at that whole side. The yellow wall in Dortmund, it's the whole side of that stadium is just standing. And obviously it's called the yellow wall for a reason because it literally looks literally like a yellow wall. There's no reason why they won't go and do this at the end of next season and do it the whole way if we're demanding it, because we've got the people that want it. So get out there in numbers first home game against Central Coast Mariners and support us the best way that you always have.
I'd absolutely love to see that.
So let's keep it coming, our Red support as we build into the new season. I want to talk about the socceries before we get to the break because of massive story did Land. I think it was Monday afternoon, so it has been a couple of days since. But the Sokkeris have a new coach, Graham Arnold. We knew walked away late last week, but it didn't take a long to swiftly pick up a new coach.
Yeah, it was probably something that especially now with social media, everybody's got an opinion, a very strong opinion at that. People weren't happy with Graham Arnold with the results and maybe the style of football.
Potentially, so they wanted to change.
And I think you have to give Arnie a lot of credit for the job he did at the World Cup was amazing. I'm sure he felt as if he had petrol in the tank to kind of keep getting us to another World Cup. And why wouldn't you know, you're the coach of Australia. It's the best job that you could get as an Australian coach to be out there on the sideline coaching your country to another World Cup. Unfortunately, he got off to a rough start and I guess he's just felt the strain probably on himself, maybe on his family, and thought, you know what, I'm not able to continue on with this. I don't have the energy to get through to another World Cup or I'm not going to be able to put my best foot forward. So he's done the honorable thing and kind of just said I'm going to step down. Consulted with Football Australia and they're very quickly appointed. Tony Popovich, who recently was at Melbourne Victory. I think he just moved to Europe to be with his family in Croatia, so he's now moving all the way back. I'm assuming his family was Star Croatia. But he's a coach that's had a lot of success. He's won the Asian Champions League with West Sydney. He's won multiple minor premierships, He's played himself in the World Cups, in the Asian Cup, and.
He knows what it takes to win. So it's going to be really.
Interesting to see how he changes it up because he's going to want to put his own stamp on things.
Yeah, massively. So in terms of the Arnold era, it's finished. Do you think it ended the way it could have ended? I mean, it feels like he should have probably walked away a year ago perhaps, or yet he let it play out the way it did the players. He even admitted that he didn't think he had the players maybe on the edge like he used to, and sort of admitted that with a few questions he'd been answering with Wayne Bennett, a dear friend, and he said during the week, So that was interesting admission and Tony Popovich coming in, as you said, do you think it'll be a positive, fresh experience, But personally, I just feel like this might have been a year too late.
Where do you stand on it?
I guess you know with Heinz, yes, definitely it was a year too late. But you know, probably at the time after the high of the World Cup and he's probably thinking, you know, we pushed Argentina, the winners, to almost extra time, and you know we almost scored the equaliser going Quoll had a massive chance and he's probably thinking, well, if I got there this time, I can go a step further, maybe something crazy can happen. So I think on the back of that, I understand why he would have wanted to have continued, and I completely understand my football Australia wanted it to continue. But sometimes you know, when you hear the same voice over and over again, it does even if it's the same message, it can lose that same impact, and obviously that's been the case.
He's come out and said that.
So it's disappointing because yeah, you probably will remember this little bit of negativity towards the end. But I think every Australian football fan should think back to the good moments of what he did for this country as a player, as a coach and wish him the best as to what he does next. And I'm sure he's going to be sitting there on his couch or in the stadium supporting the Sokarus, wanting Tony Popovich to do extremely well, because that's.
The type of guy that he is.
And it does give Tony Popovic, who I think is a very different voice, coming in to put a stamp on how he wants to play, what plays he's going to select.
You. You know, you've got a lot to do, but.
Not a lot of time because the game against China Adelaide Oval is coming up very soon and you don't have a lot of time in camp. So it's going to be interesting to see what he does how he does it. But yeah, I wish him all the best and I'm excited to see the changes that he does make.
Yeah, that's exactly right.
So the game Adelaide Over is the tenth of October, so it's right around the corner. It'll approach very quickly, so that's the first chance we'll get to see Tony Popovic's Australian Soccer rus go to work under his new leadership. It's twelve minutes to seven. You can have your say on that eight double two to three double o double Loa'd love to get your calls and your thoughts on or the new coach in Tony Popovich and how Graham Arnold departed Australian football. After the break, we'll also talk Premier League because that's all kicking off very well.
The World Game with Stepan Moore on five double A.
Hey, minister seven leag for us not too far away. You can get involved in the show A double two to three double O double. Oh we'll talk Premier League in just one second, but of course we'd love to get your interaction.
David from Highgates getting us involved.
Hi David, Yeah, goy, guys. I'm just want to have a quick chat with Stephan about I think I don't think we can be any team can be really successful in the A League without a genuine playmaker, a number ten, and I think that's been what's been lacking for Adelaide United. I'm a staunch support and always will be, but since Marcus Flores Marcelo Kriska, I really don't think we've had a genuine number ten. And I wonder the two guys that come to mind that could possibly slot into that role of Johnny Yu'll or eat an Allegance. And I just wonder whether Steff seen some stuff that maybe through in pre season and whatever that maybe we haven't seen that the Adelaide United is thinking about about filling that spot because it is so critical. I just reckon. We haven't had that genuine playmaker for a long time, and I dearly hope that we can one can emerge for Adelaide United this year.
Yeah, firstly, thanks thanks for calling in and thanks for supporting the Reds. I'm sure you've been down there at Cooper's many of time, so yeah, I guess I can tend to agree with you. Probably since Flores and Acello there Corusca the.
Real out and out ten.
I think the way football's gone these days, I think it's very difficult. Those type of players are probably falling out of the game because it's played at such a high intensity and you have to be able to run and fight, and to find someone that can do all of that plus have that, you know, playmaking ability is very difficult, and they're probably playing at a better level than the A League.
They're maybe in Europe.
They're going straight there from Brazil or Argentina. But Johnny Yule, I would agree with you. I think he is one that comes to mind. I think Zach Kalle. I think he is a different type of player, but I think he's the one that can play that killer pass. He's got good, good distribution, good on set pieces, but I would say Johnny Yule out of the young boys most definitely. I think Aligic is probably more more defensive, is more of a runner, probably similar to myself, but even more defensive than me. But we as a group, probably myself, zat Cluff, Ben Falami, coming in, Archie Goodwin, Luka y Ivanovitch, Johnny Yule, we probably all need to pitch in with assists and goals, because we're not going to have number nine that probably scores fifteen to twenty, and we're probably not going to have a ten that score that gets ten or fifteen assists either.
So I agree with you.
I think the way we're going to try and play this year, well hopefully mean that that isn't the reason why we don't win. We're going to have all players pitching in. But I appreciate your call.
Well, I'm David, thanks for getting interactive. Let's get a bit of a Premier League update, a Premier League updates.
I thin a couple of minutes left in the show, Steffan, so let's fly through these who went well over the weekend and who what are we looking forward to?
Well, I could speak for about four hours of my Arsenal boys. We were robbed again. It's I'm coming across a bit salty now because it seems to be always something against us, but everyone's against Arsenal. We got another dubious red card by the letter of the law, it was there, but if you go through there was two or three other times in the game when Manchester City players kicked them all away. So anyway we dealt with it, were two one up ended up being two to ninety eighth minute they equalized. We were literally parking the bus for forty five minutes, and defensively, we're unbelievable. We're now being called the dark art Masters and they're acting like we're some villain, to be honest, but it's it shows the quality that we have where we're going to be able to compete with City. That three points would have been massive for us, but we're still in the title race. And then after that you've got Tottenham, who again bounced back with another big win against Brentford and just probably saying to all the media and all the people that are telling him that he's not good enough and he's not gonna win things, to just be quiet and he'll keep getting wins.
And Liverpool.
Another big win against Bournemouth they bounce back after a disappointing loss at home, so those are probably the biggest results along with Man United who keep on dropping points. Another draw away to Palace they could have lost that, I believe, and they drew again in the European competition this morning, so interesting times. I think it's a two team race going for that Arsenal against City. Like you said, we don't have very long so we'll just touch on the couple of fixtures before we go into the moment of the week. Obviously a big, big match Newcastle man City. That's on Saturday night, nine pm, So if you're finishing off the Grand Final, you've had a few drinks and yeah you want something to watch. Flick on off the sport and you can catch that amazing match. And my boys Arsenal, I've got to give them another mention against Leicester should be an easy five nil win and Monday more nice and late you've got Man United against Tottenham, so I'm hoping and can continue on the poor performances for United and Tottenham get up on that one.
All right, let's get to your moment of the week. Stepans the Moments of the week. It's a good one.
This one a very very good one.
I think seems to be the trend a lot of Essay boys they play for this club and they go on to do amazing things. And another one is Joe Gouci. We've spoken about him on the show before. Obviously we're being involved in the Champions League in the Premier League, but he actually hasn't played for Rustin Viller in a professional game. That's the joy of being a second keeper. You don't actually get a lot of minutes. But he did yesterday morning against Wycombe in the EFL Cup. He played ninety minutes and by all accounts he was amazing.
The fans were wrapped with his performances.
He didn't probably have a lot to do shots wise, because in the highlights that I could watch, he didn't. He didn't make too many saves, but he must have been great with his feet, commanding and it's not easy to come in, you know, when you haven't played a game in a long time.
But you know what a moment.
A boy from I think his junior club was Cumberland. He's now playing for Ustin Villa. You know, our Premier League team in the Champions League. It's amazing. And if you're a young boy, or you're a parent out there or girl, you know, dream big. Don't think that you can't do it, because I'm sure Joe Gauti when he was seven, eight, nine years old, never thought this was going to come and it has. So dream believe a chief and hopefully one day we're talking about you on this show.
I love that saying that is one we'll keep on the show. Well done, stiff, and we are just about out of time. Andrew Raime is going to take you forward here on five double A tonight after the seven o'clock news.
Lead the way. Thank you so much for joining us. We're back next this
