From the A-Leagues to the EPL, Adelaide United star Stefan Mauk brings you the latest results, news and analysis from the World Game.
This is the World game with Stefan Moore.
Thanks to Football Essay bringing South Astravian communities together at eight minutes after seex It's great to have your company here on this Thursday night as we talk all things football as all thanks to Cherry where you can cherry pick your own to go four pro from Southern Cherry morphot Vale from just twenty three to nine to ninety drive away.
Absolute very brilliant value.
Indeed, Stephan Mork joins us as he does here every Thursday night on five Double A to go through everything in.
The world of soccer.
Stephan Moore, good to see you mate, Welcome.
Yeah, good to be in.
And normally I guess I'm only playing one game a week and if it was just based on last Friday night's game, I would have been very happy. But we have played a second game and unfortunately we drew on Tuesday night in Brisbane. So four points from two games normally you would say is okay, but at this stage of the season, when we're meeting maximum points, it's yeah, it is disappointing.
It is getting tough.
So you're finishing the season with three games in eight days before we talk about the ramifications and where the tables at and win loss three games in eight days? Is that that sounds like a lot? Is it hard to recover for for a player at the moment? How are you guys all tracking with that?
Yeah, it's always difficult when you have MIDWEK games, you have them throughout the season. I guess we we do play, you know, probably two or three in the season, and you know, if you're overseas in Europe or when I was in Japan, you know you're playing forty odd games and you're playing that five or six times.
So you do get used to it.
That's why I always laugh when they talk about the AFL boys. They've only got a five day break and I think, well, we're playing three games in eight days. I know it's not as physical a contact, but you know we're running, running a lot.
So boys are tired. It's the end of the season.
But I think when you know what's at stake, you know that that gives you that energy boost. Knowing that we need to go to Melbourne, Melbourne City who are coming second, and we beat them earlier this season, so you know, we know we match up relatively well against them, and we know we need to win.
That's that's all there is to it.
So let's sit the scene for those who aren't quite fully of cross it at the moment, Adelaide United. You need to be in the top six at the end of the season to get into the final stage. We've got one game left. We're sitting in seventh. We've dropped out of the sixth, been in there the entire season. We're tied on points though with Sydney FC, who are in sixth at thirty seven points each. But our goal differential is massive, so what we need, if anything from this final game is a.
Win that'll give us three points.
We beat Melbourne City on Saturday, who are second at the moment and have been very strong all season. That gives you a chance. With Sydney FC still with two games remaining, so remember we've got one.
Sydney FC have got two.
They just need basically one win to put themselves in So we're hopeful that Sydney FC, who have to play second and third, they have to play Melbourne City and Western United, two challenging games, that they get minimal points and we just get the job done on the weekend with the w How likely is that looking and how confident are you Stefan that you can get that job done for us?
Yeah.
I think that's probably the most frustrating thing about the season is when I look at that, it gets me angry.
But us outside of the top top six.
But I am confident.
I've been confident in every single game that we've got into that we can win. And I think there's been you know, there's times as a player where you do go into games you're like, you know what, I think this team is stronger than us. I don't know if we're going to be like if we get a draw, that's good. I've never felt that once this season and that's what's frustrating. But it's also it does make you have that belief for this last game, knowing, yes, it's a tough place to go. Melbourne City are pushing for second spot because they want the Asian Champions League. But we believe that, you know, we play our best and we play it for long enough, we can win that game. And you've also got our arch rivals in Melbourne Victory, who are two points ahead of us. They play tomorrow night against MacArthur Away. If they lose that game, then they play their final game and they're needing one point to go by us if we win.
But the big if is obviously we need to win. Yes, so you know, all of.
These hypotheticals are great, but if we don't win, then victory are safe. And if we draw, then Sydney just need one point from their remaining two games. And it's exciting and if you're a neutral and you want to see what happens, if you're not a Knight of fan, I'm sure you're just as stressed as what I am.
But you know it's disappointing.
The other night, you know, it was another great chance to go away after doing so well at home against Wellington. Our first thirty minutes in that game was probably maybe the best thirty minutes of the entire season, if not close to the best anyway, maybe the first half against Sydney f C early on in the season and that Wellington first thirty minutes were on par with each other.
But you know, we dropped away.
We conceded two poor goals, but then to score in the ninetieth minute, you know, when it didn't look like we were going to score, you know, a show that we still did have that belief and you just kind of thought, you know what, as a player, we needed that result. Like I was so relieved after that, more more than I've ever been on a football field, to be honest. And and then we went one up against Brisbane and you're kind of thinking, okay, yeah, here we go, like let's just play smart. It was a terrible field up there. It was not as an excuse. It was the same for both teams. But you know, before the game, we're warming up off the field. They didn't let us warm up on the field. So how that is Alloweder, I've I've got no idea, and I'm not blaming you had to do that before and never never, never, never before, And it's not I'm not blaming the grounds keeper because apparently he was.
He was looking for me before because I've wrote a few.
Tweets and he said, oh where is he? He didn't come and find me. Obviously if he wanted to find me, he could have. But I'm not blaming him because obviously he's just dealing with the traffic that goes on there. But you know, from a I guess the government's perspective. They own the venues and they're talking about they want to give funding for whatever it is. You know, they're building a new stadium, like give funding to stadiums that actually need it, and they're talking about upgrading Perry Park for football so they can actually play games of good quality there. And there's you know, more of a I guess boutique stadium that fits you know, ten thousand and fifteen thousand. That's your perfect scenario, so you don't have situations like this. We're a professional team and people that are paying money to go and watch the game are not thinking this is rubbish.
It's an awful experience.
Yes, So that's a bit of a side topic that's got nothing to do with the result because we we had to play on the same thing as Brisbane. They warmed up also off the field and it happened the game before against Western United as well. But as a player, you know, you're one nil up and you're thinking, come on, let's just get the result.
You know, don't risk it. Long balls if.
We need to, and it looked good for a lot of it. And besides the off side goals and obviously the one that they did score in the second half, I don't think they had a shot on target. Besides that, one, and that's where you know, we just needed to grind it out. It wasn't pretty, but we did need to grind it out and we weren't able to do that.
And then once they.
Scored, we we probably couldn't. We couldn't get back into the game. They looked more likely than what we did. So it was disappointing. But as you said, the three games in eight days, you have to kind of ride the highs against Wellington and kind of come back down very quickly. In the same way with the low of this one, you have to quickly jump back up. And you know, we're into training today, recovering, doing a little bit of work on the field, and then tomorrow we've got a short session before we fly out to Melbourne, so you know, everybody's committed for this last game. We know we don't want it to be our last game of the season. We definitely don't want that, and we hope that, you know, we can at least take it until this last round of the season where we're at home watching the game or as a team watching it, knowing that our game and we just got to hope that the other teams kind of do us a favor.
So all eyes on Saturday night.
You've already beaten Melbourne City if C this year, you've won one nill at home that was back in February, early feb So the opportunity is here now for us to go and still give ourselves a chance with a couple of weeks left in the season albit our last game. What's the rest of the league look like at the moment in terms of a bit of a picture as we have the run home now for the A League season.
Yeah, so I guess this week's games you've got, as I said, victory v Maccarthur, which is a big one for the top six, and then you've got a few dead rubbers in Brisbane or against Wellington Phoenix Newcastle. Western Sydney is probably more so about where's Western Sydney going to finish in the finals race? And it's good for them they've been out for quite a while. Auckland play on Sunday at home to Perth Glory and they need one point to kind of clinch the title. And i've heard that that's closed, if not sold out that game.
So that's amazing though first season you could clinch it. No, that's incredible it is.
It's they've been the shining light of the league this year. The crowds they've gotten and they deserve this, and what a better moment for it to happen. They're at home against Perth Glory, who were near the bottom. Not saying that it's going to be an easy win, but you know, for Perth Glory, you're going there and you're probably like, this is this is daunting. You know, let's just get out of here and hopefully we can get a point. But for Auckland, that's all they need and they do deserve it. They've been the most consistent team. I think it shows. You know, their owners really committed a lot of money and they've done things really well, and you can see if a new team comes in and does.
That, you can have success.
You still need to get a little bit of luck along the way, but you know they've done everything in their power to give the players the best chance to win on the field, and you see that in the way they play. So fair play to them, and we hope, you know, the new A League teams that eventually come in as well run as them, because you know viewership is up, you know, forty odd percent in New Zealand crowds are up obviously massively in the league, probably just on Auckland in itself, so it's great to see. And then you go into the last round and the two biggest games are Melbourne City against Sydney FC, which is going to determine probably you know, the second spot in Western Nighted against Auckland.
So it's yeah, it's interesting.
I think the top six there's still a lot of movement between second and seventh. Really technically MacArthur are still in it as well. They need to be victory tomorrow night, so it's exciting. It's great to see. The one thing that we're missing is relegation and I think that would have added a lot of extra spice to the league, probably five or six rounds ago or even longer ago when teams were struggling down the bottom. But you still have you know, Brisbane Raw and Perth Glory. Who are you know not wanting You don't want to get the wooden spoon. No, you don't want to come last. That's what the Brisbane raw Boys were saying the other night. They weren't going to give up because they didn't want to come last. They needed to get a point and now they're above Perth glory. So we'll go into the last couple of rounds and you know, I'm sure those fans don't they don't want to be rocking up to a game next season and the other opposition fans are yelling at them that they've got the wooden spoons.
So in one word, before we move on, in one word, how many teams in the A League would you like to see relegated?
If get a relegation zone one, two.
Three, I think you've got to start with one.
One.
I think to start with this one. It depends how many stronger teams are in the second Division. To be honest though as well, if you had that up and running and they were performing well, well, I think you probably go down to two. But we need to get sixteen teams into the A League first before that kind of comes in, and obviously the Ale teas as soon as wrapping up and we'll have a lot more talking about it with the local MPL here in South Australia. But then also we can start to talk a little bit more about second Division and the Cup that's coming in at the end of this season and different things. But yeah, it's all all exciting at the top end, and if you're at the team, you know, outside of MacArthur down you're kind of light.
Well, this season's done and buried.
It's at the pointing end for the men, but for the women they are into the postseason. So it all starts with the elimination final this Sunday for Adelaide United Women, who finished third this season. They had a fantastic year. They were one of the three clear best.
Teams in the comp.
The two Melbourne sides, Melbourne City and Victory were outstanding. They finished top two and then us, the Reds, who are hovering in the top two for part of the season, ended up finishing in third. So we have to playoff in the elimination final. We take on Western United on Sunday afternoon. They're the sixth seed, so they just scraped in to the top six and.
A really big opportunity for them as well. Home.
Yeah, massive for the girls and I think they you know, they had a really disappointing season last year and I think as a club, you know, they looked at that and thought, well, we need to change things. We don't want to be just filling up the numbers. We want to be competing, We want to be inspiring the next generations of girls coming through in Adelaide.
You know, and you've got to win.
I know.
It's great that you know, you can say they're professional.
Players, and it's great that you can be like, I can't be what I can't see. But also every young boy and girl, they want to follow a team that's winning. That's normal, right, you go to school on a Monday or a Tuesday, whenever it is, if you've got the public holiday like it was this week, and you want to talk about your team that's won. So if your team's winning, it's a lot more exciting. And then you get to go to these big games like what's on this Sunday. So I've heard, and this was a few hours ago, that there's over a thousand tickets sold. There was a thousand tickets sold on the first day. They're aiming for three to five thousand, which I think should be gettable. I think it should be pushing well past five thousand for what these girls have done this season. And if you're not doing anything on a Sunday, head down to Cooper Stadium and watch our women's team who have been very very exciting, and we do have one of the women's players that's been probably one of the best, if not the best player I think for us, Eron Healley on the line.
Eron good evening.
Thanks for having me.
No, thank you for jumping on and I guess talk to us a little bit. I'm sure you've been on here, maybe with the other guys. But when was the decision that you decided to actually come to Adelaide United, Because obviously you're from the state, it's a big decision. When did you make your mind up? And was that a tough one to make the move over here?
Yeah, I mean after my season I just finished one year in Portugal, I really wanted I think an English speaking country where I play next, and I think Australia was just super appealing and it's very similar to like where I'm from in San Diegooh so warm weather, the beach, and so I kind of had my agent look around in Australia and then Adelaide was one of the main teams that really showed interest. And again, coming off of a disappointing season last year, it was a bit of a kind of leap for me, just hoping that we would hopefully turn it around, and after I signed with them, I mean, I haven't looked back. We've done amazing this year and really turned it around, so I haven't thought twice.
No, it's definitely a great decision, and I'm sure you've played a massive, massive part in that, obviously on the field, but also off the field, you know, And for yourself, I guess how was it settling in and when you were with the girls earlier in the preseason. Obviously you went there for the disappointment of last year, but did you think, you know, after seeing the girls and maybe playing a couple of friendly games, did you think that you would be, you know, able to compete with the best teams and be up there to make fine Yeah.
I think right when I got here, I really had no expectations. I kind of came in being like, you know what, whatever happens happened. But instantly, I think, on like day one of preseason, I felt that everyone was there for revenge or just for to turn it around, and everyone was really focused and kind of not what I was expecting because of like I said, this season they had last year, so it I once we kind of found in our groove in preseason. I was really confident in us and we did well during preseason and so it kind of just set us up for a good year.
Yeah.
No, that's that's very true, and it's I guess it kind of shows in the results. You know, you can probably have a disappointing season and you can kind of you know, have it happened this season after if you don't have that determination. But for you straight away to notice that is I'm sure great signs and that's the exact reason why you ended up finishing third. And I'm sure you girls don't want to stop there. But going forward to the game, you are now back and available. What I guess you know, what do you think Western United? What have they been like this season?
Is?
Is there certain areas without giving the game plan away? Is there certain things that you think that you goals need to really focus on to make sure that you get the result this weekend and get the club's first ever win in the final series.
Yeah, I think we really have focused on ourselves this year and just seeing what we can do each game to get that result rather than focusing on the other teams. But Western United has just been a very strong powerhouse team. They are kind of known for not giving up and just running through routines, and I think we've played them now twice and so we're expecting that and we're prepared for kind of what they do best. But again focusing more on ourselves. And I think with Fiona up top and I'm coming back into the squad and Chelsea Dorba is also coming back into the squad, I think with that offense, I think we could do well and they have no can to stop in us.
I love the positivity and I agree.
I think, you know, you've scored a couple of amazing goals this season, and like you said, the other ones up there as well.
Fiona has been on fire.
She's I think before she left Adelaide last time she was on fire as well, and now she's come back in good form. So everybody's firing at the right time, which is what we want to see. And yeah, I guess just good luck for the game this weekend. All of us in the men's team are behind you. I'm sure everybody in Adelaide is behind you, and yeah.
Just enjoy it.
Because you play all season, you train hard in pre season, you do well in the season, for these moments, So go out there and make everyone in South Australia proud, which you've already done, and then we'll definitely adopt yours of one of our own.
Thank you. Yeah, it's exciting. Hopefully we get a good amount out there this weekend.
Awesome, thanks Aaron, Thank you.
Aaron Heally from Adelaide United Women the most successful season of all years playing in the I League Women's Camp fourteen wins, forty five points. They have been outstanding, So get out and support them on Sunday.
It is will worth it absolutely.
Twenty five minutes after six we are here, all thanks to Southern Cherry where you can pick cherry pick your own to go four pro from Southern Cherry morph Vale for just twenty three to nine to ninety drive away. We'll take a quick break. We'll talk some NPL here in South Australia. A massive weekend filled with some local games and won on Anzac Day, and then of course we'll be talking some Premier League and pasta Cooglu might be nearing the end the.
World game with Stephan Mork on five double A.
As we get ourselves through what's happening locally here in the World Games. Stephen Moore, let's talk about the NPLSA.
Yes, and as always it's very exciting. The weekend gone by we had the Australian Cup results kind of happen. So this is to get into the Australia Cup, you know round to thirty two when the A League teams come in, so the local ones that happen obviously South Australia, Victoria and New South.
Wales and so on.
The top two in South Australia go through into the round of thirty two, which is always exciting for those players, which they get to be on TV, maybe they play against an A League team or they get an away trip which I think you know, speaking to some of the boys at this level, when they get the draw done, all they're hoping.
For and is away trip.
They don't want.
They don't they don't want to play at home and I have to stay in play in front of their fans.
They want to go a night.
Away with the boys, get the win and then hopefully go out and celebrate. So some big results with Adelide Olympic losing to bear Grad three Neil Metro Stars who were flying on all fronts.
As we spoke to Danny Grayson.
He said about the three tournaments that they are going to be in hopefully and they're doing very well in both.
They won for one against Modbury Jets.
The Hills Hawks from State League two have beaten Cove which is a big win. Comets have defeated Seaford Rangers, Fulham United beat Sturt, Campbelltown have beaten gun United, so some really interesting results there. And then you've got Raiders beating Cumberland and the Color beating creud and so interesting to see. I don't believe the draw has been done for that as of yet, but you know it's going to be exciting. It's always good when you get the State League two.
Teams, you know, the teams that aren't expected to do well.
If they can get far into this tournament, it's exciting because for those players there, you know they're playing because they love the game.
You know they're not getting a lot of money.
But it's you know, this excitement to show that we can match it with the best in South Australia. But also if they make it to the national stage, it's it's unbelievable. So fingers crossed for some of those teams that are you know, lowly ranked. If they can keep on getting some surprise results, it's very exciting.
In one hour's time we'll see Raiders take on Adelaide Comments as we start match day seven of the twenty two across the season. And then tomorrow two big games as well when it comes to ANZAC Day three o'clock match Adelaide City Croydon Kings and then a night game White City take on the mod Bridgets.
Yeah, it's my old team, Adelaide City playing. So if you're not a footy fan and you're not watching the ends that clash at the g get down to Oakden and watch Adelaide City take on Croydon King's.
I think it's great.
You know, obviously to public holiday, why not put some sport on local sport here in South Australia. And you know that's a great weekend. You know, you start off watching Adelaide City on a Friday. You then watch the Reds at a pub on a Saturday night getting the win, and then on Sunday you head down to Cooper's to watch the girls and break the crowd record of over five and I think it's five and twenty six is the record, So be part of those people that break that record.
So it's yeah, it's a very interesting round.
Our youth boys take on Baclor on Saturday and the color are struggling a little bit. And then you've also got Campbell, Twandy, Para Hills and Metro v play for it.
So Metro Stars are the team.
You know, they're only top by two points from Adelaide United and Adelaide City, but they just seem the most well drilled, the most consistent with their performances.
And Danny Grayce doone.
I know from speaking with ust and aub who worked with him, they work very hard on a lot of those details.
So massive games ahead. Get down if you're hear it.
If you're not traveling to Melbourne to watch us, then make sure you get down and support them.
We've got about one minute before we got to go. But I do want to ask you about where Anne's Pasta Coglu sits at the moment. Real disappointing season for Tottenham. They were meant to be right up the top this and really competing for silverware, but in the Premier League competition itself there are only a handful of points off relegation.
Yeah, well them and Man United massive different disappointments, but they're both in the Europa League semi finals, so I think, you know, because it's been fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen years whatever it's been since Tottenham won a trophy, I think if they win the Europa League, he potentially could be offered the job or to say you can stay on.
Will they give him the backing that he will want?
Probably not, And he's been known to leave clubs or national teams, like he's done with Australia before, when he thinks the moment is there to leave and if he doesn't feel the trust is there, if he doesn't feel like he can build on this, and I reckon that's kind of the way it's angling down. And it's disappointing the amount of losses they've had, but they've lost by one goal I think like fourteen times, something ridiculous like that. So it's not like they're getting smashed. It's just that a team of that size, and yes they've had a lot of injuries, but so have a lot of other teams. They should be pushing the top eight at a bare minimum.
I'm just really hoping.
As an Arsenal fan, I don't like saying this, but I actually just hope that they can win the Europa League. So even if he does leave, he's leaving on a high and whatever job he does go on to next, you know, we can show that, you know, he has won every single place that has been there, and he's done it everywhere before Tottenham, So we'll leave it at that, fingers crossed, and can get the job done in the Europa League, which will be on next week the semi final first leg. But I believe we do need to go now because my tigers are about to start playing, so.
They are well. Best of luck to them for you, Steffan, and best of luck on Saturday night.
Most importantly, let's hope next week we've got something to watch on the weekend and we're in the top six, hovering around with a chance for finals.
We are done for tonight. Thanks so much for listening.
