From the A-Leagues to the EPL, Adelaide United star Stefan Mauk brings you the latest results, news and analysis from the World Game.
This is the World Game with Stefan Moore. Thanks to Football Essay bringing South Australian communities together.
How exciting we are back for another Thursday night. Great to have your company all thanks the Football Essay. It is time to talk all things World Games. Stefan Moore here alongside myself, saam tugwell for the next half hour seven o'clock ate double two to three, double O double. Oh's a number if you want to call in, get involved? Have you say anything happening in the world sport? Geta to you, Stephan?
How are you Takes? We are very well. How are you being?
You've another big weekend ahead of you mate, Australia Cup.
You're still alive?
We do last week obviously had the pre record with Burrello on the Wednesday before the game I said I'd be putting one top corner and I didn't manage to do that. Austin AUBI did. He did and we're through to a semi final. So everyone was happy. All smiles. Hopefully everyone enjoyed listening to the show and then watch the game.
How exciting.
So bang on seven o'clock last week, you were on a Thursday night out there at JIP's Cross. Great victory for the team two to one against West and Sydney. They were a good challenge for you guys. Yeah, it was a really good game. I think they obviously they've got win. Matter who's a really big signing. He wasn't there.
He's just flown into Australia a few days after that match. But you know, for us, it was our first A League opposition in the preseason. So we've played a lot of NPL teams, State League teams, which has been great, but you don't really know how you're going to man up against the A League teams. But you know, we played really well with our best performance of the season. I feel like we've gotten better each game, which is positive.
And you know they're going to be a good side. They've recruited well as they always do.
They're well backed and yeah, which is great to I guess get through to a semi final.
So when you say it's your performance so far of the year, because you've only played a handful of games, what do you put that down to you?
How did you take that away?
I think just you know, obviously in preseason you're working on stuff constantly and you know it takes a bit of time for it to click.
We do have quite a few new players.
We want to play a little bit different, and the messaging from the coaches of what we want to do, I felt just came out in this game. And sometimes you play and no disrespect to the NPL teams, but sometimes you play against them and they match up a little bit differently because they do things that are more unorthodox. When you play against the A League teams, you kind of sometimes know what they're going to do, so you know how to get out of that the way we want to play, and I felt like it just worked really well our pressure.
They were still really good.
Obviously it went to extra time, so I'm not saying it was easy, but you know, I felt like we were the better side and we probably still need to be better in that final third. And that's been the messaging again, be ruthless punished teams, but we're really excited, I guess to progress to the semi final against Melwyn victory.
Thank goodness for Ryan Kiddo late in the game, sneak wunning to get you across the line. Jeez, it would have almost been a drawing extra time, but fantastic to get the win, so onto a massive game on Saturday night at Amy Park.
So you hop on the flight tomorrow. I supposed to Melbourne.
Yep, off to Melbourne tomorrow. So we've got a training session here in the morning. We always trained the day before a game. We'll try and train if we can at Cooper's. At the moment Coopers is getting redone, so we're not able to train there. We'll be added our training ground and then get taxis into the airport, hopefully watch the power get up Friday night and then have a really good game on Saturday.
I've never asked you pulled Adelaide fan. I'm a Richmond Tiger, so I keep that quiet right now.
Well, you've just hold the world, so so why have you been Richmond? Just quick, I want to just dive onto this.
I saw them at a hotel when I was quite young, and I really loved Matthew Richardson. And I was a Glennelle Tigers fan when I was younger as well, so Tigers they were bad back then, so I don't know why I stayed with him, but I've had a few good years recently, so I'm happy they can bottom out and I can enjoy it probably when my son's a bit older.
Rub Well, they've got the Wooden spoone this year at the very anyway, let's get back on track. So Saturday night Melbourne victory. I mean, this is the original rivalry. Is what we love about Adelaide United when you get to play against Melbourne that it's always the big games. It's a blockbuster event regardless of where you position on a ladder, but a semi final, everything's online.
This is this is exactly what you want, exactly I think as a as a club. You know, we spoke about we wanted to win silverware this year. We want to be the best club and this competition. Cole spoke about we have to win five games to be champions and you know trophies are very hard to come by in any sport. So if we can win you know, the Australia Cup in pre season, it leads us into a really good season for the A League but also it gets us into Asia for next year. So Sydney FC are kicking off their competition tonight in the a CL two. It is so a new competition they've kind of changed them up a little bit, but you know it's great. It's more games, it's obviously good prize money, and it's a better opportunity for the club to kind of get their name out there, their brand out there, and for players to impress on you know, the stage in Asia. So that's a carrot that's dangling there as well. But firstly, we need to take care of Melbourne Victory. As you said, the original rivalry. They've recruited, well, they've got a few new players in there. Their biggest recruitment is their coach, Patricks Norba, who's come in turning Popovich left at the end of the season and because Norba, who was with Melbourne City the Rivals.
And now he's come up across there.
He had a really good time with Melbourne City before going over to France and struggling. But you know, I played with him and kind of worked with him as a great guy and a really demanding coach. So we know what they're going to do. Roughly, we just have to stop and we have to match the fight with him. And the crowd is going to be up and about because they always are with those.
Games to sell out. Yet do we know that, I'm not sure.
I think the biggest issue we've got is it's on a Saturday night and the Geelong Cats are playing.
That was before.
I'm sure there's a few fans thinking this is a bit annoying, but maybe you know, a few Cats fans will will jump over to the game afterwards.
So we'll see, we'll see.
I think it should be ten to fifteen thousand at least for that Cup game hopefully.
Anyway, all right, speaking of recruits, just before you at Adelaide United have made a few for yourself.
Yes, we have a few late ones.
Jordan Elsie was just announced before and Ben Falami, who's from Melbourne Victory, has joined us, which is a really big signing for us.
So tell us about Jordan Elsie coming back to Adelaide. He's on a one year deal, but great to have him back because he was with us a few years ago.
Yeah, he's, you know, probably one the club didn't want to lose a few years back. I think I was here with the year he did leave and they tried to resign him. I think he got a bit more money somewhere else in Newcastle. We went there and every player needs to make the decision they think is best for their career. He went there, then to Perth, then to India and unfortunately he did his ACL in I think it was a preseason cup there as well, and yeah, it was really disappointing for him. But he's back now, I think ten or eleven months post surgery, has been training with us to keep fit and then the option came up to potentially sign him. So he's trained, he's proved himself. He's a leader at the back and we know what he can do. He's going to be a great kind of bit of experience. You've got Bart as well, the Dutch center back. You've got Jordan Nelsion and you've got Kickianas, so two great people for Kickianas to learn off. And Elsie you know, he's he's great for the change room, not just on the field. On the field, we know what he would do, but off the field, I think it's just as important to have experienced players around all of these younger ones.
Yeah, well we're super exaps about what Adelaide's squad can bring in this new season, but we do love to get people on the line on the show and sort of get them involved and we learn about the players around the competition and one of your new teammates is joining us tonight?
Yes, Ben Fulami is he on the line with us?
This is.
Thanks for joining us, Ben. How are you?
Yeah, I'm good.
Thanks thanks for having me guys.
No, no worries. I thought i'd get you on. I had to actually get your number obviously message you. I didn't even have that. I forgot to ask you at lunch today and I thought, wow, I need I need to get his number to get him on the show because his hot property. So thanks for coming on. How have you settled in for your first few days here Adelaide United?
Yeah? Yeah, I settled him quite well so far. To be fair, the boys and the team have been very helpful yourself includers with tell me no great areas to live, places that visit, coffee shop, everything. So it's been a really enjoyable experience so far.
Yeah, that's awesome. I guess you know. We want to pump it up. Obviously, it is the original rivalry this weekend. Normally you're on the other side of it. So what is it like for you at Melbourne Victory normally when you're coming up against us, do you does it has the have the same weight as what you think it does for us down here in Adelaide, is it Is it a rivalry for you guys in Melbourne when you've been there.
Yeah, I think I mean in terms of the weight for both sides. I I'm going to see another I'm an Adelaide player, but look, I mean for both teams, it's a it's an intense rivalry. You know, no matter what side you're on. I think even in the in the week meeting up to the game, you can feel that bit of that bit of tens and that bit of fire in their training with your teammates. So I think no matter what side you're on, it's a it's a big game.
Yeah, that's that's good to hear. And now you're on the Red side, the right side. So what can the fans expect to see from you? Obviously you've had a few little injuries and last year and you're just getting up to fitness now. But once you are on the park, what what can the Reds fans expect to see from you? Yeah?
I think the fans can expect to see someone who's who's positive, someone who likes to run with the ball, somebody who likes to take on defenders that are at every given opportunity, And yeah, I think I can bring a great work ethic to the team, somebody who likes to be positive whenever I get a chat as well.
Yeah, no, that's I think that's great. I think obviously i'm maybe biased now that you're Adelaide. You know, I think you're a great player. I think it's someone that obviously you will chasing for a while. And Melbourne Victory's loss is Adelaide United's games, so thanks for jumping on. Lastly, before you go, where where did I say the best place to live is in Adelaide?
I can't actually remember it. You know why so many players where's the best place to live? And I've heard a couple of different answers, so obviously we had that conversations. I can't remember that.
Semaphore, he said, semaphore and I said, stay away from Semaphore and get down to Hennoy Beach. All good, No, it's good to hear that you're listening to me when I was talking.
Cheers mate, thanks to tomorrow, Thank you guys, button follow me to join us there.
So he's an exciting new prospect for Adelaide and I will be watching with keen interest during the season of course, So Saturday night he's going to suit up for US.
Is that right? I don't know you, to be honest.
I think that's up for the medical staff to decide what they want to do. Obviously, he's only come in a couple days ago, drove up fitness levels. I'm not sure he was coming back from an injury from last year. So we'll see if he does line up, but if he doesn't, hopefully he can get up for the final and if not, you know, leading into the A League season that's where we really want him firing.
So speaking of these Australia Cup semi finals, there is obviously another one being played on Sunday nights and this one's between South Melbourne and MacArthur. See this will be huge for South Melbourne, the opportunity to host MacArthur a huge A League side themselves. But they've become the second ever yeah, the second ever member Federation side to reach the final.
If they can get there, Yeah, it's been a dream run for them.
They took on Hume City who they beaten extra time and I'll watched that game. I thought they were really good, to be honest, the quality of the game was great. The most disappointing thing for South Melbourne and what's happened is that they've actually lost their captain and probably their best player in Harry Sawyer who's gone to MacArthur. So the transferred deadline for Australia is the fifteenth of September, I believe, so they needed to get the paperwork in by that date. The player needs to be registered, so he can't play in this game against South Melbourne. He's obviously Cup tied, but they've lost you know, their striker, their captains, so I'm sure they were disappointed. I'm sure they were very happy for him to actually get this contract because every NPL player wants to become a professional, but they would have loved for it to be in a few weeks later on if possible. But yeah, I'm excited to see if South Melbourne can win this. It's going to be massive. They've got a big, big following from back in the NFL day, so fingers crossed, you know. I hope for the league for sorry, the cup competition anyway, I hope they get through because it's exciting seeing them get through, and then we get through and hopefully we host them here at Cooper Stadium and yeah, that'll be a really really exciting game.
So do you know how the venues get decided for these games.
Or is it just sort of a bit of a secret herbs and spices.
Well, all the NPL teams, so the local league members, they always host it. If it's an A league game, so two A League tams again each other, then it's predetermined already, depending on the seedings of how they've drawn out of the hat for the final. I'm pretty sure it's just Football Australia. They decide. They are the ones that will organize it. I think they take the money from the gates, so they will probably choose the biggest crepit think they're going to get. So if we're playing against MacArthur, I would assume we'll hold it here in Adelaide. If we're playing against South Melbourne, that's going to be a difficult one to see what they do. But yeah, I would love nothing more than to have it here at Cooper Stadium. I think it's the best stadium in Australia to play football at.
But we'll see.
Firstly we need to get through and then we'll see.
Who we're playing. In the final. All right, well best of last four Saturday night.
We will get on to more of the World Game on the other side of this break.
We have the EPL to talk about.
The Champions League started last night, which was fantastic to see Asian Champions League. And there's a disaster that's happened up in Queensland that I want your thoughts on. We'll get to that all on the other side of this and of course you can call into Ain't double two three double o double Love the World Game with.
Stephan Mark on five Double A. Welcome back.
It's thirteen minutes to seven Leith Forrest will join you after seven o'clock tonight here on five double A number eight double two to three double O double if you want to join us. Stephan Mark is here alive in the studio with us as we walk through everything in the World Game, which means we have to go overseas a Premier League updates.
We're a month into the Premier League already.
It's gone by quick, very very quick.
Yeah, give us a bit of a rap because we're in a week five this weekend, but of course a few matches in the last seven.
Days we can go through.
Yeah, I guess the ones to constantly beat our Manchester City and they, in my opinion, were very fortunate to get away with the winning this one. They were home to Brentford and Brentford came out scored within the first twenty or thirty seconds, could have had another one or two as well. And then Earling Harland the robot up top there for Manchester City. He's broken almost every record already. I think he's scored more goals then every other team has individually like him, individually has scored more goals than the teams themselves.
So it's ridiculous.
How do you stop a guy like that. It's very very difficult. Arsenal come up against them this weekend, so my boys is going to be very very interesting. But a couple of big results with Liverpool, they had their hopes up, you know, they beat Man United. Everyone's saying Liverpool going to challenge our slot new manager, We're going to fight for the title. And they've just lost at home to Forest, which is a big, big, big loss. Really, when you look in the grand scheme of things, Manchester City don't lose games, so you can't afford to lose any games. Let alone when you're playing Forest at home. But Man United finally back to winning ways. They were lucky I guess Southampton mister penalty. They ended up winning three new which is comfortable, and they had a big win in the cup competition, so hopefully their conference is up for all the Men United fans out there. And the biggest game of the weekend was the North London Derby and it is red. Arsenal were won Niel to Spurs and it was quite an interesting game where Arsenal had a few outs. Declan Rice suspended, mat Nodguard got injured on international duty, Kalafury got injured. So Arteta came out in the presser afterwards and just said he had three.
Plans for this game.
Each one got kind of wiped away by the injuries or the suspensions, so we had to adapt and set the team up very aggressively. For Spurs, they were pressing them high. They won the ball quite a few times. They actually should have scored. I think they should have punished Arsenal and I could see from watching this game Arteta he cools over, I think it was Ben White and he says, listen, stop playing the ball short. They going Man on man, start knocking it in behind, be more physical, be more direct. We don't have to play pretty, just win. I'm assuming that's what he said anyway, and that's what we started to do. We went off a set piece and that's you know, how you win titles. Sometimes you don't play your best, but you win. And I keep saying we because I'm such a big Arsenal fan. I hope there's plenty of Gunners fans listening. But we've got a massive game against City this weekend. But it's good to keep us in the title. We've kept three clean sheets and the level is just so high, and we're still yet to see a win from all the promoted teams and it's not looking good. I think last year it was the same the three teams that came up with the three teams that went down, and the gap in the league is just becoming too big. So it's going to be a really interesting lester but probably the best chance I reckon to stay up. But you know the others. Southampton they want to play a good side of football. They're struggling, recruited quite a few new players Ipswich, they've got a couple of draws but I just don't know if they're going to be able to score enough goals. And Leicester are probably the one with a little bit more quality as they obviously went down to the Championship the previous year, so they've they've got good players, but it's just such a big gap to the you know, the rest of them, and there's just so much more money to recruit better players.
Absolutely at the top. CD have won four games from four. Arsenal and Newcastle the other teams unbeaten at the minute, but just to draw each with their three wins, and just in regards Tottenham before we move on to the Knicks, I just want to ask you about what you thought of Age Foster Conglu's comments during the week. A little bit of a little bit of slight arrogance and ego coming through with the confidence of Himselfie said, I don't, I don't Just what does he say?
I don't something online?
We always win the second year it was I think it was maybe you know, you only see the clips of it, don't you see these little things and the news grabs that as we do.
That's what we do in this industry.
So I think he's just replied to a comment saying what happens in his second year, and then he came out in a presser earlier before their Cup competition this morning and said, I'm just stating facts.
In my second year, I've always won. Do you want me to lie?
And they kind of laughed and joked around, and I think it's honestly, it's it's the Australian presence of you know, they don't like someone different. He's very honest in what he says, and it's true he wins in his second year. He said this morning, if I don't win the next year, I can't say that, then I'm lying.
But for right now that's the case. He obviously believes it.
And I think, you know, we want as a player anyway, I'm not saying we because I'm not a Tottenham player, but as a player, you want your coach to go out there and we want to win and we are going to win because he believes it.
You believe it, So he got an ability to you as a player to then go, well, we have to win exactly.
And you know this morning there were one kneel down against Coventry which would have been a disaster, and honestly, the fans were starting to jump on his back. They ended up winning two to one, scored two last minute goals and you know what, though, that shows the belief the players have in him and hopefully this can turn things around for him because it's so cutthroat over there, you know, It's it's different to you know, the AFL, in the NRAL let's say here in Australia and even the A League.
The scrutiny's not there. You can lose a couple of games here.
Over there, you can't afford to lose any games because they're on you straight away. So he's yeah, he's got himself a nice win this morning through in the next round of the cup competition because they won't win the Premier League. They've they've dropped too many points already, so it's out of the you know, the two cup competitions they are in.
Let's see how they go.
Yeah, so Tottenham in the Premier League one win, one draw or two losses already in the four weeks played. Let's talk about the Champions League though, fair a bit going on in the last couple of days with the opening week, Steffan, who were the games that you were were sort of closely watching.
While I was up at five o'clock both mornings. I don't actually know why I woke up so early, because I didn't have an alarm on my my son didn't wake up. I just woke up and I thought the Champions Leagues and I'll get out of bed. So maybe it was me subconsciously wanting to be up. But on day one I was watching Real Madrid and obviously you know them, they're the powerhouse. The front three they've got with you know, Bellingham and bub Avin, it's yes, Rodrigo, even you add into that, it's you know, it's scary.
But they were really poor in the first half.
Still I could have been a couple up, and then they ended up winning three one, so it looks comfortable, but it wasn't buy And I was flicking between that watching Harry Kane score goal off the goal and he's yeah, he's he's just broken. I think the fifty to fifty goals in Europe, I think it was so you know, he's flying. And Nessa and Iran Kunda played in the Under nineteen Champions League. I was hoping he was going to be on the bench for this one because if you're six seven two up, you probably bring him on for five or ten minutes, but he wasn't on the bench because they had that game, so hopefully in the games to come he gets a chance. And you've actually got another player in Australian Marcus Unis from Western Sydney gone to PSV. He's also been included in the squad for them, so he wasn't wasn't involved with the senior team, but he's in the Champions League squad, so it's positive. And Joe Gouchi was on the bench for Austin Villa, so a bit of an Australian flavor in the Champions League. And then this morning the game to watch was I thought it was going to be Manchester City be into yeah, and it wasn't exciting zero zero draw. I'm sure a lot of people out there think and how can it be exciting? But the chances that were there, the quality of football was on the show, it just just wouldn't go in for really, the team so interesting and good that man City have kind of dropped some points leading into the game against Arsenal.
So Arsenal play tomorrow morning in one of the games Barcelona up against tomorrow morning, and then Atletico Madrid another one of the highlighted teams for tomorrow morning. So four point thirty, if you're willing to get up nice and early, you can watch more of the Auasia Champions League.
Let's get into your of the week. Oh here, you could be of a Ray Steppens Moments of the week Rantal. So what were you a bit angry this week?
I am, well, I'm always angry to be friendly. I am quite friendly. I'm always I'm always going into bat for football or soccer, whatever you want to call it. The world game. I feel like we do get the short straw a lot. We don't have our house in order. I completely understand that. But the amount of stuff that seems to just constantly go against us, and this week it's just come up on my Twitter feed or x feed. This morning I saw that Brisbane Raw are now getting kicked off Suncorp Stadium. So it was actually the game I'm pretty sure where meant to play against them. They're getting kicked off because they've got a concert. Luke Combs I believe, has been booked for the twenty fourth and twenty fifth.
That's when Brisbane Raw were meant to play.
So what happens then I think we get moved to a Tuesday, potentially going from Vinceregari who's a well regarded reporter, so if he's got it wrong, that I've got it wrong.
So we're both wrong.
But you know it's something that you know we're now playing a game two days later after a concert. The pitch is going to be a disaster, which is always a disaster up in some court because of the amount of concerts they have up there or events with monster trucks or whatever they want, which is great. It's owned by the government. They can do what they want with no problems. But then don't expect to then have football come and play games there and when they want the Matildas or the socceros, why would Football Australia want to take games there and help them out? Or as they said after the Women's World Cup they said, it's a legacy, we want to leave the Anastasia polor Chick I think it was at the time she said, I want to leave a legacy, and the legacy for me should be a stadium, a fit for purpose football stadium twenty to thirty thousand, exactly what they need for situations like this. Brisbane can play there, the local league Grand finals can be there, a home of football Perry Pike, which they've already got. They're not asking for massive money and instead, you know they're talking about with this Olympics coming up, you know, doing a stadium that will help AFL and cricket when they've already got a perfectly good stadium.
Maybe it needs to be renovated.
But you know, we as footballers, players, fans, we tend to get the short straw and I think we need to really come together here to fight for what we think we deserve. And you saw with the Women's World Cup the amount of people that love football. If they want to get those events, they should put their money where their mouth is and invest in the sport.
Mike Drop, that's excellent, Stephan, Well. I wish we had more time to talk about it because that is a very very valid argument you've just created there. And let's see if anything happens that we will keep a close eye on. And I think during the weeks to come here on the world game, mate, we are out of time. Great to have you in once again this week. Good luck on Saturday night.
No thank you. I'm very excited to wearing to go.
Let's hope we get the win and then we'll be all smiles next Thursday night.
As well, so as well, it'll be big to get into a final. Let's see how we go. Three minutes to seven. Thanks for your company tonight,
