Published Dec 19, 2024, 8:43 AM

From the A-Leagues to the EPL, Adelaide United star Stefan Mauk brings you the latest results, news and analysis from the World Game.

This is the world game with Steffan Mook.

Thanks to Football Essay bringing South Australian communities together, it certainly is. And bang on six point thirty here on this Thursday night. It's always great to have your companies. We start talking everything in the world of soccer. Eight double two to three double o double oh is the number you can call. Get involved in the show. Stephan mork is alongside myself, Sam Taugwell get eighty.

You, Stephan, I'm very well.

How are you? I'm very well, thank you as well. So loss to get through tonight. We've seen coaches moving out, We've seen teams with some big losses and some big wins that are worth noting. And we've got a lot to talk about in the Premier League as well. So we'll get onto a lot of those bits and pieces very shortly. But can I just say congrats once again another goal in the week past and another great win. In fact, probably want of a better wins beating Central Coast last Friday night.

Yeah. Well, obviously for me personally, it's always could when I score how many weeks in a rows this now two but three in the last four I scored against Perth as well, so it should have been four. Should have scored probably the week before that year on a role. So it's it's good. I'm glad I'm getting in the positions to have chances. I think that's probably the most important thing. Even I'm attacking midfielder. So to score this many goals early on is great because it just builds confidence, like for all players. But you can play really well, but you score the goals, and I don't like the way it is, but that's just the stats of all sports really, Like you know, a fel for pall basketball, whatever it is. You know, you score the points, so you score the goals. Yeah, that's kind of what the headline is. That's what people talk about. And you know, sometimes there's the unsung heroes that do all the work and never get the credit. So for me, I'm loving it right now. I'm scoring the goals and I am doing a lot of hard work as well for the team. But it's always nice when you get rewarded. Absolutely of course with this.

So the team's still undefeated, which is great seven games into the season, so this is your best start in the decade. So you've got to go all the work to twenty ten to eleven, since we saw a team at Adelaide United start as well, where they were eight. No this record right now, five wins, two draws to be beaten, which is fantastic. Sickond on the table. But your biggest challenge is to come and that's tomorrow night against Sydney FC. So this is a great matchup. I'm looking forward to this.

How about you, guys, Yeah, we're really excited. I think, you know, you look Sydney outside of probably where they should be on the table. I think they've played a lot of games in Asia. They've had I think two or three red cards, which is their own fault obviously, but it's kind of impacted them winning games, so they should be higher up, I think on just looking at their performances. We're obviously looking at their videos assessing them as a team. They've got so many threats. Kleimulla the striker is an unbelievable player, obviously. Douglas Costa played for Pier Munich Evenors Brazil, Like, there's not much more you need to say about him. Joe Lolly a top top player, Sega Chi Casseras. They've got talent all over the field, they want to attack, they want to score. They're kind of one hundred miles an hour team, which I think will I prefer that because that's kind of how we want to play. We want a bit more control. But I think it will suit us better than when team you know in the past, like Western United and even Brisbane Raw and because they just sit back and it's for us that's very hard to break them down. Where this team it's going to be hopefully not too much transition, but I think we will. We will have a lot of joy if we're brave enough to play the way we want to play and let them press us, but kind of be Yeah, like I said, be brave enough to play through that press and we know we're going to lose it. Sometimes they're going to have chances because they're a quality team. Fingers crossed we can get another clean sheet, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's, you know, a high scoring game in this one.

A couple of games in a row clean sheets, which has been good so far, but we do want to keep the ball rolling, so it'd be fun. You've got a couple of good home games coming up as well this next two weeks. With the Christmas period, so Tomorrow night home crowd, that's a great thing to be able to return to. And then after that you get to play Western Sydney as well on a Friday night, So two really big blockbuster games for the team.

Yeah, I think, you know, this is like a really good point for us. Especially it's you know, it's great that we get to stay at home for Christmas. Yeah, we got Christmas Day off where we weren't meant to, but now they've changed it, so that's great. So you know, playing I think these games a Friday night in Adelaide already is great because we get decent crowds. But around this Christmas period New Year's period, I think because Cooper Stadium so accessible that people, you know, they can be at the beach during the day and they can easily get to the ground, so you're not going to be missing out on crowds. If anything, I think they're going to be bigger, Like I'd be very surprised if Tomorrow night there's not twelve thirteen thousand in the house against Sydney FFC and Western Sydney the same. So for us as a playing group, we you know, we want to stamp ou authority on this season and show that we are proper title contenders. So we need to We need to prove it on the field, though, don't. We can't just talk about it. We've beaten a lot of teams now and now we need to keep that going because these two matches can really set us up for the new year.

So you feel internally that you still need to prove that.

Not really internally, I think some of the media, to be honest, like I was listening before the game, and I think, you know, not trying to call anyone out, but it was I'll just say that name, so I will call them out. Actually, but Andy Harper, I think it was before the game saying, you know, he can't see Adelaide United scoring three or four before the Central Coast game, so he tipped Central Coast. And that's fine. Everybody's entitled to their opinion. For me, you know, you're saying, you know we're undefeated at that stage, saying, you know, he's not sure about us, don't know if we can score three or four when in other games we had multiple chances. And I think, you know, Adelaide the same with all the sporting teams here we kind of get pushed to the side and even if we're doing well, it's ah, they're not doing that well. Where if it was a Melbourne team, a Sydney team, you know, they're saying everything that's really well about them. So I'm excited. I'm excited to go out there and prove to everyone how good we are.

Yeah. I like that. That's the positivity inside the group and how excited you are, because I think the fans are as well. Everyone really wants to see our reads really push on from this great start. So good opportunity tomorrow night and congrats just as well to his a is becoming most Reds player ever. So was he humble with that? How did he sort of take that when he found out the news last week?

Yeah, well it was obviously a Jay Barnett kind of pulled out of a game with his hamstring, so he's had ongoing issues from last year, so he kind of I was because we trained in Central Coast on the Thursday, so I rocked up to the airport expecting to see j there and he just wasn't. Now, I was like, what's going on? So it was kind of I guess, as the players, you think who's going to play here? He said, obviously only needed the one more game to break the record, and he trained so well for it. For a guy that's thirty seven, the way he trained, it's ridiculous. And he deserved the chance to play. You know, we've got a lot of good young players. He deserved it and you know, I think, you know, it was enjoyable. We made comments to Kiddo before the game, said, you know, we need to go out there and we need to play for him. It's not often that you actually say you want to play for an individual player, but that was the moment when you did want to play for him. And I think, you know, four nil win, the way we played, the way we fought together, that was that was say, yes, you know, that was the way he is as a player. And then afterwards, you know, we spoke about it, Carl and Kiddo and the rest of us again and a few chants going off. And he deserves it because as Cole Cole came out and said, actually, he's probably been the best player for Adeleigh United. I think we've had so many good players, but obviously he's broken the record him and huge for me. The two standouts and.

They just happened to be the two game records holders, aren't they Yeah, exactly, And I think that shows, you know, because they've been here for so long.

The club has loved having him around, and they've loved being here, and they've played for the Badge. So I'm so happy for him. I think he can keep playing on for a couple more seasons. I don't reckon he will, but I wouldn't be surprised if he keeps playing till the end of this season. I think they have a coaching or something outside of football for next season, but I wouldn't be surprised if he plays on because the way his body is and the way he trains, unless all of a sudden he just runs into a brick wall one day and wakes up and he's like, I can't move. I just don't see why he wouldn't play, because he's just so good and he has so much passion for the game as well. Exactly.

I just cannot quell that. So let's hadle around the rest of the country in terms of the A League stiff and big news coming out this week around Melbourne victory.

Yeah, I think it really took everyone by shock. On a Monday Monday or Tuesday where I was driving home and someone one of my friends is screenshotted things sent to me and I was like, surely this is you know, obviously, with AI and everything, you're not sure if you actually don't know if everything's real to be honest. So I was like, gidding on, is this true? And then I saw the official pages announced and I'm like, Okay, it's definitely real now unless someone's hacked into that. But I understand all right, so Patrick CAUs normal. Firstly, he's come back after a disappointing stint in TWI, which is in France. He got relegated. They're a city football group club, Melbourne City the championship to toire in France, really poorly. I guess a couple of seasons they got relegated with struggling. He got sacked, He came back, had no job obviously, Melbourn victory the arch rivals. He takes the job, which already the victory fans hated. A lot of them were not on side. There's probably be a small amount that were, but they thought, okay, we'll give him a chance. City fans obviously were thinking this guy, is he serious, Like he's just done what he's done with us and now he was going to go to them. So obviously that's happened. He started well, he made the FA Cup final, he lost to mccarth which is disappointing. He's made some big calls. He's dropped Arzani, he's dropped Bruno for on a Roli. But you look at the way they play and been fighting so far. You know they're sitting third on the table.

Well five one and one I think yes.

So they started exceptionally well and then for him to just jump ship. I don't know if there's more to it. I believe there must be for some reason. I don't know what it could be, but I think there must be more to it. From players, I guess you look at it and you think, well, we've into this guy, We've done a whole preseason, and now he just walks out the door. So you've got to get a new coaching. Whether the assistant takes over to permanently obviously is interim. He's taken over, but it's the unknown of like who's going to come in now? So as a player you're thinking, well, this is this is really difficult. And then the other side of it for the fans and the club I guess as well, they're thinking what are we doing here? Like we want to we want to see you as a coach now we've just bought into the style, the way you're playing. So I get it from that point of view, and what I'd love to hear from the listeners out there, obviously a lot of Adelaide based ones is does this sort of thing make you not want to support the club when a coach leaves when players leave, because I look at it as part of the game. It's it's very different to rugby league and AFL and even the cricket here because where the world game and the transfer season is always on there, especially for coaches, because coaches can leave it any time. It's happened. Amarin just left Sporting Lisbon, the champions there, He's doing well with them. He leaves to go to Manchester United. I think they've lost four in a row. So it happens everywhere in the world. Does this affect you from supporting your club because for me, when I was a kid, I loved Travis Dodd. I love Matthew Lecky. They both left, but I still love the club, you know what I mean?

Like I love a good question.

I loved Arsenal as a youngster. Tierran Ree was my favorite player. He left to go to Barcelona. I still loved Arsenal. Like I'm not sure if I'm the odd one out maybe in Australia, but I think there's something to do it. Does people want the attachment to the players and the coach, but I think is the attachment not more to the club. So I would love to hear from anyone out there that's listening in as does this sort of stuff affect you from you know, supporting the club deeply to come week in week out to actually, you know, be a passionate supporter for us.

It's a great question. So you can call it an eight double two three double O double. Oh I'm not really sure if the coach has the same sort of attachment with the fans as maybe players, because players are the stars, right, They're the ones who support on field. So personally for me, I'm just going to use Adelaide United for that's my club. So if Carlvi it was to walk in the door, take the job for three months, and then walk out, I would have been really disappointed. And especially if with taking something overseason understand especially with if you're upgrading your career, you're taking a step further in your career developing, then you can understand personally why that person would do it. But if they were just to leave and it's like you've only just started, you've had seven games, like you didn't even try, like you want to at least some commitment to your team, you almost feel like did you are you just using us? Are we a stepping stone? Like, why did you bother coming here? Wasting our time, the fans time, the player's time. That's that's the bit you take a feast to that. I think that's that's the one thing you feel. Yeah, you know what you have resentment towards the person rather than anything about the cop.

Yes, and you're one hundred percent right, I think with that, and I guess I'm I'm inside the four walls, so I see it from both sides, and I guess the way I look at it is that you know, if opportunity comes for a coach and whatever reason, the coach apparently he's going as an assistant to Yokohama Marina, so a massive club back in the city football group in Japan, but an assistant job. So you're kind of like, well, I'm not really sure about that, but I guess the potential what that can open up to is massive. And in this industry, right, you have to think about it. If you're a player, if you're playing really well, you get a new contract, you get the money you want, the money you deserve. Same with a coach. You're doing well, everybody loves you. If you're not doing well. Look at the Premier League, over over there, andres is constantly asked or threatened that he's getting sacked by the fans anyway. Russell Martin for Southampton, he's got them promoted from the championship, done extremely well. Yes they're struggling, but of course they're going to struggle. He's just been sacked. Gary O'Neill, good manager, Wolves doing okay, He's had a hard run. He's just been sacked. So the fans have to understand if things go badly, you want the coach sacked just as quick, so you can't get upset if they're going to move to go on to something else, and the same way with the player. So I underd I do understand it, and I think there's something special about that loyalty, and I think there is probably a right and a wrong way to do it. And maybe seven games into the season isn't the right time.

To do it. If it was, say fifteen, would you be thinking differently? And then maybe it's okay, Well Melbourne is still third on the ladder. Perhaps at that point in why an't you seeing it out? They're about to potentially fight for the championship like that's they're the sort of thing it's there's never a great time. Maybe the off season obviously, yeah, exactly.

Obviously, but maybe the opportunity doesn't present itself then so if you say no, the door maybe closes and it never opens again. So it's you know, it's it's really interesting. I guess how in this world of sporting, in football, it's just so ruthless in both ways. You have to be selfish, but I also do love and that's something that this is a side topic. But Adelaide United has I think created a really good club for this where a lot of players do leave and they they let players go because they want you to fulfill your dreams. The club can make some money from it. Great because Adelaide also knows if it doesn't work out there, if you spend a couple yads, you think I want to come home, not just to Australia, but they want to come home to Adelaide. They want to come home to Adelaide United.

Yeah.

The other day we had necessary out at training. We had Lucky Brook, really we had Bob Alina. So three ex players that don't have to come and train with us. They want to stay fit, they can do it on their own, but they won't to actually come out to the club because they enjoy it. It's got that that feel to it, and that's that's what's so special about Adelaide United. So that's what I hope the fans can understand a little bit more when players do make decisions to leave that they yeah that they don't get too harsh on the players because it's you know, they want to progress and they'll always come back and as they've shown anyway, I love that.

Well. Your perspective eight double two three double o double is the number to call if you want to share it with us, because we'd love to hear it if you've got a differing view to Steffan or perhaps agree while you're talking about coaches as quickly. We played this with the Sports Show moments ago, so I wanted to share it with you. Ch Posta Coglo. He was asked whether he has a hard job than the PM.

Oh yeah, mate, come on, I mean how many times that you know he has?

He has an election?

What aw years? I have won every weekend, matey. That's what I'm saying, man, We have an election every weekend and I'd either get made in or.

That is so along the lines of what you've been saying are just battered from pill and a post. They can never really win, no, until they win the whole thing.

Yeah, and like it's actually incredible because then, like Andrew for example, he's at a club that's growing to get back to where they were probably three or four years agoing to Pochettino. But you know, the expectation, because he did well last season, is to get better. He's gone down a little bit. Arsenal is the same. I love talking about obviously Arsenal, but Arteta was fighting for the Premier League. He lost to Manchester City, the juggernaut that's been the best team I think in the Premier League history. They lost by a couple of points both both of the years. They've dropped off a little bit this year and now everybody's saying they want Arteta to get sacked. But he came in five years ago and this club was in the same position as Tottenham. Look where he's got him and the fans would have said, as long as we're playing good football, as long as we're producing some of our own players, and it was now, you have to win everything and you can't lose a game. It's just it's so ruthless, and social media doesn't help because normally I'm assuming back in the day. I'm not that old, but I'm assuming back in the day, you talked about it at the game, you booed the coach, you told him how bad he was. Maybe there was the odd talk back radio show, but there wasn't phones, there wasn't constant stuff. There was the paper, so only a few people could say, you're at the pub with your mates afterwards talking about it. The coach never heard that. Though nowadays there's fifty one hundred, one thousand reporters in there from different countries, hammering you constantly, the questions coming in. It's a tough job. So that's why when something good comes you have to take it such a.

Good point, Steph, and you're making some really good ones a double two to three double o double ow calling. We'd love to get your thoughts on this. Visit Southern Cherry Morph veil for Great Savings during their y twenty four plate clearance sale. It is on now. We have more of the World Game coming up after the break and we're going to talk all things from the Premier.

League the World Game with Stefan Morre on five Double A.

And you can visit Southern Cherry morph Vil for great savings during the twenty four plate clearance sale which is on Now. Let's go around the world a Premier League updates.

Well, we have I guess some some I guess big news with the Premier League. Obviously Manchester you know we've spoken about recently Amerim's come in. He's done okay to start with, but he's this week he's made a big statement. One he's beaten his art drival in Manchester City. But the other biggest thing that I think that he's done that set the tone at that club was he's dropped Marcus Rushford and Garnaccer, two massive players, two players that have you know in the past. Rushford especially obviously it was a thirty goal a year player. The last two years he struggled. Guanaccio is a good young player, but he's tatted as one of the best in the world. And I'm not sure if he's actually said what it's for. For discipline issues, for not following the team. But if you don't want to be part of the club, you don't want to do what I ask, you're out and as harsh as that is it is, but in that industry and not speaking from experience being inside those big clubs, but the egos are so big, and in a positive way, but you have to understand that the coach needs to demand the respect of everyone and if you don't follow, because if you lose one or two, and if the players can sense that, they can smell it, taste it, they think this guy's not up to it. Where he's going to come in and make that decision. If you don't want to be here, if you don't want to do what I ask of you, the doors there, the club maybe loses out because they're paying them three hundred thousand pounds a week and you're losing these two players because you're gonna have to sell them. You probably won't get top dollar for them. But that's the decision that the coach needs to make and the club needs to back the coach because that's what Arteta did years ago for Arsenal when he first came in. I think that's what the best managers do to make everyone be like buy in or see it later, and then any new players coming in they understand what the mentality of this coach is like and they almost like, Okay, I want to be part of that, rather than it's a basket case here. We've had three four coaches in at Manchester United. The colt is obviously terrible for whatever reason. So if you don't want to be here, we need to change something. We can't just keep changing the manager. They've brought in players every single season. Something else needs to change. And I think it was a brave decision and I guess the best thing that happened was that they won the game, because if you did that and you lost one nil, the pressure. We just spoke about the scrutiny he's getting probably called that he's going to get sacked after after three weeks, but he was able to win and late in that game, which again shows that that resilience and it's great, great for them. I don't like and United, but I'm happy for the coach coming in and some of the other big results. I guess probably Chelsea, you know, winning again. They're they're really for a team that was an underdog at the start of the season in terms of it was, you know, people calling it a basketcase. They had about forty players that they've signed, a new coach, but they've actually managed it really well. The new coach and Za Morosco has come in from Leicester. He's done really well with kind of playing one group of players in the Premier League the other group in the cup competitions. They're doing really well. He keeps saying in every press conference, you know, we're not title contenders. We're not title contenders. And that's the same what Ruaneri did, like all those years ago at Leicester when they ended up winning he said, we just forty points they ended up winning it, and I would love to know are they saying that in the change room, because as a player, you'd be thinking, why do we hear? Why are we not trying to win it? But maybe he is saying and he just wants to keep the noise down and I understand that as well. And probably the other one from across the ditch. Chris Wood from Nottingham Forest. He's obviously a New Zealander. He's been around. He's been a I think it was it was Notingham Forest now obviously, but before that he was at Newcastle. We spent spent quite a lot of years in England. But he's in the form of his life. He is scoring goals for fun. Nottingham Forest were tipped by a few at the start of the year to actually be relegated. They're sitting him forth fourth, so it's I think he would be thirty one thirty two years old. And I know actually the Auckland guys because I did a podcast with Terry mcflyinn, the football director, and he actually said we were very cheeky. Any New Zealand player with a passport, we sent him a message. We tried to get in contact with him. They I think they went to a camp where there was a New Zealand game on. They spoke to every player. They tried to get Chris with there. Very very out of their depth. I think that was. But you know what shows the ambition of that club and maybe Chris, We're thought, oh these guys are nothing. I'm up to. I'm gonna have to score a few goals this year and I'll go back and maybe they can give me a club. So it's it's great to see because if there's no Ausies that are in the Premier League, well it's great to see you know in New Zealand they're doing well because you know they're very close to us and we're always probably the one that's dominating them in most things, so it's good to see them maybe not getting one up on us. But they're doing all right.

They're doing well. Absolutely, they're pushing their way. Hey, Caravelle Caps before we get going tonight, what's the latest around there?

Yeah, massive games this morning again the Arsenal, they got up three to Gabrie Jsus, who's been struggling is gone. I don't know if it's close to a year without scoring. It's for a number nine, it's a disaster. But he scored three this morning. So funny how you score one and then the rest follow. So they beat Palace, newcast will beat Brentford three to one and Liverpool beat Southampton two to one. So those three sides, Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle are into the next round, the semifinals. And tomorrow morning it's six point thirty on Bean Sports and you have to Utenham and up against Manchester United Amrim. So two managers that you know are still obviously Amerm is very new but and he wants to win a trophy. He says in his second season he always wins something. This is a great competition, he wins this he's in the last four, so I'm excited to see that one. Tottenham finally got to win. On the weekend they smashed Southampton and then actually Russell Martin who pumped and up pre game said how good he is as a manager, and then destroys him five mil and then Russell Martin gets sacked. So thank you very much.

And believe with me. Well, you're right, I think he you reckon he can win this tournament? Do you reckon he can?

I think so. I think it's you know, you win this game, you get into the last four and four massive teams in it. But it's two wins and and has proven I think they can actually beat any team that they match up, and I think week to week consistency they struggle, but in the cup competition maybe that's where he's got the edge.

I like it. Well, Stefan, we've brought our way to the end of the show, but some great takeaways I think in the end. Congratulations to I think was Amadillo who's taken home the tickets to Adelaide United home game. That's from West Croydon World and so you're on your way thanks to City Discount tires Port Adelaide, Stephan, big couple of Fridays coming up, but also a big couple of weeks because we won't be seeing each other for a few weeks. We are on hiatus over the summer break. So enjoy your Christmas, enjoy your New Year. I'll see you next year. You got any plans coming up just quickly of the next few weeks, but other than playing.

Games, yeah, just we'll playing, yeah, really just playing the games. We've got Christmas Day off, like I said, which is great, so I'll be with the family, my family, immediate family ofb with my wife and my Son's great to be with them in the morning, then go to my mum's, then Corlors parents a New Year's Day strategic I reckon. They gave Christmas Day off New Year's Day on because they're worried about a few other boys. So it's going to be a very very quiet New Year's Eve. But then after that we've we've actually got a longer break, which is great. So we've got a few days off, hopefully some nice weather, and then we actually go to MacArthur on the fifth for a game, and then we go straight to Wellington for four or five days before we play them, so that'll be a nice little away trip. Spend some time with the boys, and I'm sure all the dads in the team will be loving for or five nights getting so go to sleep.

Excellently, my mate. Enjoy your work and I'll see you next year, as we'll all our listeners. Thanks once again for another great show.
