Loss of that to talk about our A league as well. We are here all thanks to Football Essay and the all new Cherry Ti Goo four Pro. It's landed at Southern Cherry in time for kickoff twenty three to nine to ninety. Drive away, Stephan Moore, Good evening to you.
Very glad to be back for another show.
How have you been? I've been very well. How have you been?
Most importantly, always good after you start the season the way we have two wins in a draw.
The only disappointing thing is.
We've got the weekend off so international game, which is great obviously as the Soccer US are on tonight. But when you're winning, you just want to keep playing games. And it feels like we've just finished our seventeen week preseason and now we're into another week of training with no game it's.
Weird for you because he had the bye week in the first week in season. You've had three games and eget another bye, so it would be very clunky for your continuity, wouldn't they.
Yeah, you just I think, you know, like all players, we just want to play, and I'm sure the fans just want to watch us as well. So the women's team are playing, which is great for the Adelaide United fans they can go on or be able to watch them at least, But for us this week, it's it's a strange feeling. Like you're happy. You're always good going into training after winning games, but when you don't have a match on the weekend, you're kind of just like, well, what are we training like this week?
We're not really training for anything specific.
We're training we're still trying to get better of course the things we can work on, but you know, we're not going to start preparing for Brisbane Raw, who we play next Saturday now this early, because you know, normally we do, for example, if for training on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesdays off Thursday, Friday game Saturday, the Monday will be first day back.
Kind of a little bit you know.
Yeah, a little bit of review, open the legs up kind of the ones that didn't play, we'll do a bit more. Tuesday is probably your session you would do with maybe BPO, which is ball possession opposition maybe, so you watch their videos, you work on that, then conditioning stuff. Day off Wednesday Thursday is everything with the ball BP, which is the fun stuff, patterns, attacking movements, and then day before the game is you know, really light, just kind of have a bit of fun and then if we've got an away game, straight to the airport.
So this week you're kind of.
Just training, doing a little bit of bits and pieces, trying to have a bit of fun. So it's not too serious and boring, I guess, but also all right, we've got to still keep some conditioning. So yeah, I'm excited to watch the soccers, don't get me wrong, but I.
Would love if we were playing as well.
Yes, of course, Well we can't have it all unfortunately, and we'll get onto the soccer rows a little bit later because we have a fair bit to go through. In terms of tonight's game. We'd love your calls too, if you're watching on or you're keen to know anything in regards to the season so far, or where the Aussie team are at eight double two to three double o double. Oh that's the number you can call in on. We'd love to get your interaction tonight, so let's adelaide United. Of course, this was a I've been describing it this week as a good win, but not a great win over Western United.
How would you describe it? Two to one?
Yeah, I think score wise, I would probably agree with you. I think we started the first twenty minutes. We started really slow. I think we with the first three game or two games, so we started really well in the first half, aggressive with the ball. The other team struggled, but I'm assuming Western you know, I'd probably had seen that and thought, you know what, let's get on the front foot.
We're away from home.
They had a really young squad out as well, missing a few senior players. My mate Gruccio, whose captain, he was back for that game, first game back, but he's on the bench.
He said he gave him a really good rev up before, so he's claiming it was him.
Yep.
I'm not so sure about that. But they they came out and they were pressing us. They kept the ball really well, They're two young center backs in Lennon and Vidmar very famous name in Saldustralia, Vidmarcain Vidmar, son of Tony.
They were playing really well, which we kind.
Of thought, all right, first five ten as its pressam put them under pressure, they'll make mistakes, but they weren't. And then we kind of got a little bit rattled and then they scored from the set piece, which we can touch on.
With the VR stuff afterwards.
Whether it was offside or not with the guy blocking, that's another story. But we were kind of not at the races and then slowly, you know, we made a couple of passes, we got forward, had a few chances and fortunate with the first goal that went in. But I think once we scored that we settled down. I had a really good chance, that Cluff had a really good chance. Dylan Peirez had a header before halftime, so we could have been leading. And then second half I felt like we were there only ones that were gonna win it. They did have that very clear and obvious not gonna say error, but very clear and obvious penalty call that wasn't given.
So again another one we're going to touch on.
But besides that I didn't really feel like we were going to lose the game besides in that first twenty minutes, so we tried to just take the positives out of it that you know, we weren't at our best, but we still won. And last season that was probably something that the group when they weren't at the best, or even sometimes when we did play quite well, we were losing games. So again a positive thing that you know, with seven points from a possible nine, we're going into your night round in Sydney against Brisbane and Raw and then we play Perth Glory at home after that, so we've got a couple of really good games coming up and we just need to keep getting better.
And to sit in fifth spot so early in the season, it's a good launching pad for what's to come. So I know you're desperate here to talk about what's going on with the VAR.
It's so controversial as it is around the world, but i'd love.
Your thoughts on maybe just the VAR to start with, and then these specific isolated incidents from the weekend.
We're your thoughts on the VAI to start with.
Well, for me, I don't like it. I don't think you know, I understand.
Like in tennis, for example, cricket they've got these system but the game's very slow, it's very stop start, so you kind of.
Can and you can get it. Especially with tennis.
Now they've got it where it's you don't even need the umpire cricker even to a certain extent now unless the technology stuff's up, it's you know, obviously they've got the umpires call as well with some of the ones, but it's obvious, it's clear. The only one that's actually clear and obvious is the off side one.
Yes, that's such, that's that's there. I think it's great.
Then you're getting you know, potentially one millimeter off side set.
Which is a bit brutal, is it?
Is it?
Really?
I guess that offside rule is Is it the attacker getting a benefit?
Are they getting an advantage? Not really if you're one millimeter? But where do you draw the line?
Then?
So I understand that one, But all the other stuff is just where it becomes someone's opinion. And if you've got you know, a referee on field, you've then got three referees or whoever it is.
In the VR box.
They've both got different opinions and when you slow anything down, things look differently.
You're trying to.
Get different Anga's trying to say, oh, maybe he touchable, maybe he didn't touchable. This season, we have been told the new referee boss over from the UK.
I think it's Glenn Moss.
He's come over obviously a very experienced referee. He's someone that I think the referee is actually learning a lot from. And he said we want to have a higher threshold with calling the referee over to the VR box essentially, which I agree because it was getting a bit of a joke. Every game there was three or four decisions potentially is it a penalty? Is it a red card? And it just took the complete buzz out of it. So now they've got a higher threshold, which is great. Great they're trying to give actually less free kicks as well, less soft free kicks. They've changed the handball roll a little bit, which is good because there's too many penalties for handballs that were not intentional at all.
This one here for the first one, for our first goal.
That we conceded, or the only goal we conceded, I thought dan Zaki was in an offside position. And what we've been told is if you're in an off side position.
The referee say it every single time.
If you're offside and you go to block someone, you're affecting the play, so you're going to be off side. Yes, Dylan Peiris was at the back post. He's been blocked by Dan Zarki. They've then got the headed back across. Vidmar's scored. They've checked it for a couple of minutes. They've said it's all good, and the referee, I think it was Dan Elder. He said he was blocking, but we don't think he interfered with the play. And I don't know if they drew the line, so I don't actually know one hundred percent that he was off side.
But for me, did he interfere with the play. Of course he interfered with the play because it's a set tactic.
A lot of teams will use block the nd man in the defensive line from a set piece because if you block him and push him forward, you can't impact. You can't impact it, and whoever's behind, if you have two or three players, they can get a free header headed across.
So it was a set play. It was maybe poor.
Defending from Dylan and he'll be all right with me saying that I'm sure too late now, but it was offside, didn't call it.
No worries. Then in the second half, where.
One all, we're dominating the game, we lose the ball. They go on to counter, the ball goes into the back person. I think it's Wallaty, the boy that came on for Grimaudi at halftime. It was a clear tap in at the back post, and kiddo, I think he's just thought.
You know what, he's going to score a tap in.
I've got to try and at least touch the ball here or at least put him off. I thought, in my opinion, he tripped him. He's he's touched him and live I was probably on an angle directly behind it, and I thought that's a penalty.
That's annoying.
And then everyone kind of looks around and thinking, okay, he's given her a corner. And then we're like wait, okay, no worries. And then we're like, oh, yeah, no way, they're going to get picked it up. And then he just turns around and says, okay, not take the corner.
Wow.
We're just kind of looking at each other like laughing, because it's when it's not against you.
Yeah, it's all fun and game away with it.
If it was the one, you know, if I was the one that was tripped, fuming, you would be fuming as John ellwiss he was fuming at the end. He was, and he has every right to be. I think it evens out over the season a lot of these decisions. You're always going to get some and miss some. But I guess that again goes back into this whole VR. I think Football Australia have now come out and said that they've completely.
Missed, that they've made a mistake.
But I don't really understand how you can make a mistake when you've got the video to watch it back. Otherwise, what's the point in having var.
So that's exactly right.
So the people up in the box or whoever's watching the vision in the moment to sort of go, let's let's look at this, are they not sort of rewinding any small moment they can to go, hang on, we might.
Have something to investigate.
Like you'd think that that if that's so obvious to the players, to the fans, to the coaches, that it would be to the guy in the box watching the replay who just needs any excuse to press for rewind.
That's his only job.
Yeah, and there's actually being sa I saw one today from Arsenal when Saliba got a red card.
They played the whole video back and actually it was quite cool to see.
It was the video from the VR box, right, so you could hear the referee what he was saying on field to the linesman. Obviously, that goes back to the VR. The VR watching it, they're rewinding, looking at it, checking the angles, what they're saying, and then they say, Okay, we think you need to come over and have a look at this. And then as he's coming over, they're actually saying, okay, get this angle for him. So when he gets to the screens, he's looking at this angle because this is the angle that we think he needs to see. Sees that angle, watches the other one. Okay, he asked his questions, bang red card. I don't think it was a red card biased Arsenal fan, but at least you could see that so you could kind of understand it. So it's great to see that stuff. But with this one, and this is always going to happen. It's not just the only time it's happened. It's not just in Australia. It's not the Australian referees. It's just again, it's someone's opinion. They've thought, you know, we've got a higher threshold. We don't want to call him over. Kiddo's maybe got a touch. It's not a clear and obvious era, but I think that one as well as there was too the night before in the Newcastle Western Sydney game that we're given. So we would love, obviously to hear from you guys out there, probably the fans. I'm a player, so I'm a little bit different. But as fans, do you actually enjoy it? Do you think it brings more to the game? Are you okay with them slowing the game down? But if it means they get let's say eight out of ten decisions right rather than what it was before, because I personally would love if they scrapped it. I don't think that's going to happen, but we would love to hear from you on that one.
We'll call in now eight double two to three double O double. Oh.
There's so many great opinions out there in the var space because it's been around.
For probably what six years maybe now I reckon about that.
It's so it's it's seen controversy all around the world. Have you say, eight double two to three double o double ow? Is it time to move on from VR? Has it had its time or do you think it really is benefit to the game. We have a sixty dollars good money going is about to give away tonight and a couple of greenstand tickets all things to Cidney discount tires put Adelaide to the next home game for Adelaide United too, so all worth you while getting on the phone, eight double two to three double o double oh. Just in regards to the rest of the A League competition at the moment, Steffan, any results from the weekend that sort of took your fancy, well.
I think the probably the biggest one was was Glory losing Perth. Glory they've got new owners in they've kind of spoken about, you know, they're trying to change the club.
They've been spanked first round six.
To one against the Balls and now their next home game that they've had they've lost five nil to City who actually are underdone. They're missing key players with injuries. I think, you know, for a new coach, David's Rilich. It's going to be really interesting to see how ruthless the Poliga group is with them purchasing it. Obviously, Ross Poligra is the one that's in charge. Does he want to make a decision straight away or is he okay with kind of writing this out because he thinks, all right, we've got January where we're going to reinforce with a few players were don't have the squad that we want. But I think in this league, like I look at some of the other squads and I think Perth Glories is just as competitive as you know, a Brisbane Raar and Newcastle Jets are Western unind and they're not.
Losing like that.
So if you're a Perth Glory fan, you're really upset. And their fans are actually chanting, I think during the game, saying we've got the ball, We've got the ball, and if you're a player out there, and that's when I'm just thinking, oh my god, this is this is not great.
So that's probably the one that stood out the most.
And then and then also Wellington Phoenix beating Central Coast three nil.
Central Coast the champs.
They're really struggling to score goals and Wellington Phoenix along with their other New Zealand team Auckland who had to buy are flying.
Yeah they are. They've they've kicked five.
Goals having allowed one in and they've got three wins on the board from three games. So they're doing a very nice job at the moment. We're going to get to your calls now eight double two three double O, double O. Let's it out to Campbelltown first, high Tony can I lad look?
Firstly, I want to say thank you for giving me the tickets last week.
Oh fantastic mate, guys.
I'll tell you was it was the first time that my son actually got to see Adelaide United alive, so that was an experience in the skill. It was great to see the win to park for only eight bucks right around the corner was even better. The entertainment that was put on for everybody and for the kids, it was magnificent. It's just a world drilled process that Laid United is doing at the moment. It was great. I also would like to say so that why someone was so engaged. There were some pieces of the game that, yeah, you're right, Var could have done a little bit better. However, the quality of football personally, and I've played a little bit, just a little bit, was fantastic. I think you guys played so well. Yeah, you know, you were a little bit behind the ball at the start. However you just picked up the game and momentum and the skill level and the way you guys look for each other and passed was fantastic. So I've got to compliment you guys. I think you're on a good thing. You've got a great group and you're going to go far. I mean, hopefully you win it, but you definitely do extremely well in regards to the AAR. Look, it's up for debate, really, there are some things that.
It's difficult.
You can say, look, let's scrap it and just let the game play the way it is, and you just do it and you move on. And that's how it was for one hundred years, for a very long time. However, you're right that you got the AA. You shouldn't really miss anything because I saw a elite I reckon there was a penalty for the opposition or a decent free kick that should have been given and it wasn't. And I was cheering, obviously, but that you know that can't parcel However, though, I just want to compliment Adlaide United. It's a great place to go and I hope everyone gets out there. Thank you for the ticket.
No, that's a great call, Tony. Just before you say something, Steff and I want to say and endorse exactly the same. I hadn't been that many Adelaide United games until maybe the last couple of years, and I will never forget my first game, just the experience of it all. It was like, Wow, how have I been missing out on this for so long? And it's such an intimate environment cooper staged because I only get about fifteen sixteen thousand in, but it feels like you're fifty and it's such a great game to watch it. And it goes quickly too, so it's a brilliant night out. If you haven't factored in before.
No, it's brilliant.
I think I'll have to clip that up and send that to the Adelaide United team. Everyone behind the scenes. Obviously the players are one thing, but everyone behind the scenes. It's great to hear that it is well run. Obviously, your son that you're able to take is amazing. Hopefully you know that inspires him to want to be a professional player. I'm sure if he does, but if not, be involved in the game, and you.
Have to probably buy a membership.
Now I'm sure he wants to go every week, so that's probably the only downside is you're going to have to dip into your pockets, maybe because I don't know if we can give tickets away every week to yourself.
But no, it is. It's a great day. I remember as a kid going.
The stadium's had a few upgrades every now and again, obviously recently, it's only getting better. And hopefully, as you said, we keep winning and are successful and you know the aim is to win it this season and we started really well and if we can get more people there to support us, it goes a lot further because the opposition players always common and say how hard of a place it is to come a specially when the crowds really behind us when we score. It becomes a very difficult place for away teams to come.
It's this venue in the country. We know that already Bruno's at the prospect of Brunette.
Could even guys probably the A League, the best ketch secret in Australian sports step and I'd.
Say you're not right, Yeah, I thought you missed their home games.
I've been away, but looking forward to the next one in a couple of weeks, are actually going to be in Bristoon thinking we've got Britton away and the unit round I didn't I didn't play that very well. But anyway, listen with that cry and the job site. I wish it's been into the set of the A leagu because I reckon the two Grand finals we lost in victory could have been different results. Back to the one when we lost six mill and I was there, very expensive. Everyone are concous. We're described because the halftime entertainment. But Kevin Musket cleaned up, there go wash behind now that now day.
That it would have been a straight bread And then of.
Course the following one when we lost on Niel think the Red Cabins was too late, but I think we have to play virtually almost sit there's a game with ten minutes enough one nil. So for me, things like that, the Vaar they can correct those and if they do it right, I've got no issue with it.
Yeah.
No, I think you're to be honest when you look at those two games, your spot on I think, and that's obviously what it was brought in for. Just thinking back, you know, the first things that come to mind. I was too young, but Diego Maradona hand of God, even though it's an iconic moment that never happens Tyryanrie when he also used his hand. I think it was to be Ireland in a World Cup qualify. It doesn't happen England scoring against Germany, and I think it was the twenty ten World Cup when the shot hit the crossbar, and technically it was in They don't have the goal on technology technology, so technology is being great and I think a lot of those moments that you know, looking when you're on the opposite side of it, when you're copying it, you would love it to be there. So I definitely do want and for those big games, you don't want them to be decided by a wrong decision. So I completely understand it. I just find it so frustrating how it's so inconsistent. I personally think the best thing to do, and I know it's probably because no professional football players have ever gone to be referees, but I think they should fast strike a few ex players not to be referees on the ground because I don't think any of those players would want to be on the field copying abuse. But if you could sit them up in the VR box with an official, so you teach them obviously the law so they understand it a little bit more the technicalities. But from a player's perspective, they will know a lot better than I think match officials because they've played the game at a top level.
So that's probably what I would do. Is it easy to do? Maybe not. Maybe a lot of players don't want to ever even.
Think about stepping foot into a VO box or onto the field, but that's probably the only way I think you can maybe try and minimize the mistakes that are made.
This is the World Game with Stephan Mork.
Congratulations Bruno, we're going to give you the sixty dollars GYG vouch to the guzmani Gomez for being a good call. They've got the Cali burrito and the nacho fries out at the moment, which is fantastic. Chipotla season fries, sour kareem jack cheese, fresh pico de gallo and guacamole. Outstanding dinner for your way home. It is nine to seven. We have to try and squeeze in on the other side of this break a big preview to tonight's soccer U's game World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia.
The World Game with.
Stephan Mark on five Double A.
And of course we are brought to you thanks to Football Essay and the all new Cherry to Go four Pro. It's landed at Southern Cherry in time for kickoff twenty three nine to ninety drive away great value. Indeed, tonight we are just under an hour away from our World Cup qualifier in Melbourne against Saudi Arabia. Our soccer rus are in action. Stephan, how we go tonight and you've got the lineups in front of you.
The lineup has dropped, so first up, I think I think we'll win.
I think two nil for the Soccerers.
I think Popovich has yeah, got a good, good feeling about the group now. I think he's made a lot of changes with the last squad and it's kind of the fringe players. The starting eleven which i'll go through now. Joe Gauci's kept his spot, which.
Is great to see.
Lewis Miller, Jason Geria, Harris Suitter, Cam Burgess, Jordie Boss is the back five and then You've got Jackson Irvine your captain, with Aidan O'Neil in the midfield above them as the number ten's Aiden Fristich and Riley mcgree and then Mitch Duke as your number nine, which is a very similar team to what.
Was played in Japan.
The one coming in, I guess is Aiden O'Neil, who missed the last camp, so I think that adds a little bit more quality. He's been on fire in Belgium, so I think we've got a really settled squad now the first eleven. I think it's actually really exciting to see the amount of changes he made from the last squad, just because he's giving players a chance. Hater Matthews, young boy from Sydney has come in Cassaris, who's I think thirty one thirty two. He's been called in for his first camp. So it goes to show if you perform, you'll get a chance to play. And I think that's the way the national team should be. It shouldn't be the same twenty odd players getting selected. No matter what it should be. You have to perform well and if you perform well at your club team, he's going to pick the best players so I guess it puts everyone on show perform well and Tony Povlovic's watching.
Give us a good score on what do you think it is if you were winning tonight?
Yeah to nil, nil, I think to nil.
I'll go on mcgree mcgree goal and a Harry suit a set piece goal and of.
Course we have Bahrain next Wednesday as well, so we'll be able to wrap that up when we return next Thursday night.
It's been another jam packed show.
Thanks for your calls tonight, Thank you Stefan for another fantastic event and Leith Forrest is coming up very shortly after the seven o'clock news. Have a good night and go to Soccer Roos
