From the A-Leagues to the EPL, Adelaide United star Stefan Mauk brings you the latest results, news and analysis from the World Game.

This is the World Game with Stefan Moore.

Thanks to Football Essay bringing South Australian communities together.

That's a bit better. It's twenty eight minutes to seven. Great to have your company tonight, and of course rowing and Timmy you're done and for the next half hour it's all things football. I'm seeing tug Well with me. He's read superstar himself. Stephan Moore. Great to see you against Steph.

I thought I was going to have to put on a voice and attend to be Rowie's your best Rowie, go on, I'm not even going to give it a crack.

Give me a few more months here, not your challenge.

Great to have you tonight, eight double two to three double O, double O. We'd love your calls tonight if you're interested in having a chat with Stephan. Anything happening in the World Game of course we talk about everything abroad and everything here local as well. What have you been up to recently, mate? Oh hear you're about to hop in, hop in a bus and head out regional in South Australia. Yeah, we are.

We've since the Cup game obviously, we've We've just been playing our training here. We had a game against the NPO All Stars last Friday night, which was good.

I think it was five or six zero in the end, so it was good.

It was a good hit out. I think it was good.

Obviously we're trying to connect back with the community with Football South Australia, so it was a good opportunity for their best players from their competition, I guess to play against us, good for us to get another ninety minutes under our belt for some players. Other boys played a little bit less, but overall it's been really good. I think we're just itching to start round one. Once you get to this stage whatever, you're ten twelve weeks into preseason, you just want to get going. And as you said, tomorrow we are hopping on a bus for a very long journey to Mildura, so I think it's six hours in total when you account for your stops, which I'm not looking forward to that, but I actually am looking forward to getting away and kind of going, yeah, going somewhere regional. It's you know, South Australia Victoria kind of border there where you know, we get to kind of see different fans, people that support the club, hopefully or turn them into new supporters.

So how many of you are going and what are you going to be up to?

So I believe the whole squad has been roped into it, so even if you're not part of it. So the injured boys, a few of them, they actually went up today, so I think they were Yeah, I guess disappointed. They're injured anyway, and they got told that they're spending an extra night there, so they'll do a clinic tomorrow, I believe, which will be great, great for the local kids there, and then for us. We train on Friday and then we've actually got a game against Brisbane Raw on the Saturday. So Brisbane Raw are flying into Adelaide I assume, or maybe Melbourne and then getting the bus down, So it's amazing. I think they're really sorting us out. The local council up there. They've got an amazing facility. I think I had a big grant so the gym that they've got there. I could be wrong, but I was told they got about ten thousand people at their local footy grand final, so obviously they love their sport. Hopefully we'll get ten thousand out to our game against Brisbane Raw. But yeah, it's just exciting. I guess to go back give to the community where you know, the people's club. We try and get out as much as we can and we've done that within pre season, so this is just that next step and yeah, we'll see how it goes.

How much of this have you done in the past with Adelaide United, So these sort.

Of troops, I think there's been a lot of talk about it, but it actually hasn't kind of come to fruition because it cup competitions and different things. But this preseason we've played against Hove, played against Adelaide Blue Eagles and Cumberland all at their ground. So I guess the beauty of that is you play a friendly game against them, Hopefully they get a lot of young kids coming to watch the game and they can make money from that. Obviously they've got the bar there, they make food obviously, so people can come and buy that. And then we've gone out to color and t Tree Gully as well and held training session, so our whole squad went all twenty five players. We all took a different team, which was amazing and it's something would be great to do a little bit more of. It's hard in pre season, but I think that's something that as a club we need to keep continuing to get better at and hopefully the people in the community actually start to see us and understand that, you know, we want to be out there, we want to give back. So if you're a local club, get in touch with Ruben from Adelaide United and he'll sort it out.

That's outstanding. No, I absolutely love what sporting clubs at the elite level are able to do with communities. And you are very generous with your You've got time on your hands as well, so you get to make the most of it and you make kids, especially at schools and things that make their day when you get to rock up. And I'm looking forward to seeing the mill Juror game shape up and the big township turn up for that because that's a brilliant opportunity that when would they get a chance to ever see elite sport like that played in their own backyard. That is fantastic, So well done. We'll talk more of that as we get closer to it. But I do want to talk about a podcast you do away from just our radio show. You do a podcast with another a league footballer and what very good friend of yours yes, I do so.

Football friends with Ben and Steph. We're just about to kind of launch the season two, so we're going to be doing quite a big giveaway, so make sure you kind of go on to our socials and check that out and then season two will drop next week. So Ben Roucher, who's a good friend of mine, an Adelaide boy Henley High Boys, same as me, played for He actually played for about fifteen different junior clubs.

I reckon so.

Loyal when it comes to the junior clubs. But he's a great friend of mine and he is a guest tonight, So welcome to the show.

Ben.

Thanks guys, thank you for having me.

No worries.

How many how many junior clubs did you play for?

There was a few. Started out started out at Para Hills and then slowly venture my way back in, tried to stop at every club.

On the way.

That's all right, I guess when you start out there, you learn to be a little bit rough and then you end up at Adelaide City the Pretty Boys. And we won quite a few things there, didn't we.

Yeah, it was yeah, I played a lot of clubs and it was mainly just because back in those days. I started it when I was four years old, and it seemed that every kind of second year, you know, they weren't fielding a team that was my age group, So I had to kind of chop and change clubs a little bit. But yeah, I found my way to Adelaid's city. Obviously that's when me and you became became good friends. And obviously we had a lot of success. We had a really good team. You know, we had Bruce Kmal in that team as well, So three players that went on to play professionally is a pretty good NPL team.

Yeah, definitely.

And we were playing against Campbelltown who had Paul Lizzo, mod Bridgetts had Jacob Melling. Brandon Brella was there for a little bit, so that age group had had quite a lot of good players. But onto you now, obviously we can speak about the junior stuff on our Football Friends podcast and Western United. How's the preseason shaping You took our big, big number nine in Hiroshi Ibasuki. How's he fitting in and how are you guys looking going into the season.

Yeah, going really well. Obviously it's a long preseason, which is you know, a blessing and a curse. Sometimes but I think it's been a bit more of a blessing for us this year because you know, we lost a couple of players and we've got a couple of new ones, so it's given us that time to really find our feat as a team. And I think as the preseason has gone on a little bit, like you guys, we've gotten better with each performance that we've had. So we've still got a couple more friendlies to go before round one, but shaping up really well. Looking forward to the season.

Beginning, Yeah, normally Adelaide United to play Western United because obviously John Alwis see Adelaide boy probably wants to get home and see some family. But this this preseason it hasn't worked out. But big news, I guess with Hayden fox joining the Soccer US. He's obviously been a massive part of John Alewis's coaching career and recently being with him at Western United. How did how did the boys take that? Obviously it's a big loss just on the you know, the the eve of the season starting.

Yeah, obviously, I think everyone was just really really happy for Foxy and what an amazing opportunity. You know, he played for the national team and as did Popper and Paul O'Connor. Now they all get the coach as well. So obviously Foxy has had a long history with John, but he's also had a long history with Popper, So I think it's an amazing opportunity. And you know, Foxy is someone that's you know, he goes into such detail with the defensive side of the game. He really has an eye for her and I think what he taught me he's been at Western United was unbelievable and thoroughly enjoyed working under him. And yeah, I wish him all the best of luck, and it's a great opportunity, and you know, it looks good for Western United as well to have a coach going to the national team.

Yeah, definitely.

And he's definitely improved your defending because when you were a winger back in the day, converted back to a left back, that wasn't your strong point. But yeah, now I would say, you know, maybe biased, but you're probably the best left back in the league. And maybe we can try and get you back to the Reds one day. But before we let you go, I know you probably need to go and have some dinner with Jazz. Is there going to be another Grouz show in the A League because I heard and I've now seen it with my own eyes that he could be the best one.

Well, I don't know about the best one he's got.

Yeah, but.

Young Joey Garucco has been at Adelaide United now for a couple of years and he's now getting the chance to know. He was on the bench for the last Ralia Cup game. Unfortunately didn't make his debut. I was in the stands. I was eagerly awaiting, but no, Look, it's you know, incredibly proud moment for the whole Grouca family, and you know, to maybe have two Groucas in the league isn't probably something that I ever imagined happening. But from all accounts and from what you've been saying for me off there, he's doing really well with Adelaide United, so hopefully they do give that opportunity.

Yeah, definitely, And he's had a good club for so thanks so much for joining us, Ben, And yeah, you can go off and I'll probably speak to tomorrow morning on the way to training.

I appreciate it and love the show. Been enjoying listening every week.

Oh we love that. Thank you to Ben Garuccio for joining us on the program. So if you want to catch both Stefan and Ben, you can catch them on Football Friends podcast. Just search wherever you get your podcast. It is nineteen minutes to seven. We're going to take a quick break soccer rows to talk about next have a big game next week here in Adelaide, The.

World Game with Stephen Mork on five double A, one.

Of a seven leake Forrest coming up after seven o'clock. We are here to talk all things football and we're taking your calls eight double two to three double loow double low. Love to get stuck in with you Stefan around the soccer rus Next Thursday night, Adelaide will be pumping with Green and Gold at Adelaide over when we take on China in one of the fee for World Cup qualifiers. This third round has become a little bit trickier for us to navigate from this point because we had lost and a draw in our first two games. Still a fair way to go, but to automatically caught off qualify for the World Cup in twenty twenty six, we need to get some wins on the board and no better opportunity with our new coach Tony Popovich for the first time. Some've been in the job for about three two and a half weeks by the time the game rolls around, but he gets a chance to get out there and put his soccer rous out in the field. Yeah, exactly.

We obviously went through on previous episodes how to qualify and more spots, which is great, but we've started off horribly, I guess to put it bluntly, and we need to win. We need a win against China. It's in Adelaie, which is great, but then we go away to Japan. So at the start of the fixtures you would have probably said, away to Japan, if we can just sneak a draw, that's okay, but we're almost looking at we do need two wins here. So Tony Popovic is a mastermind of a coach. He's won the Asian Champions League. He's probably the perfect coach for this because as a player, you know, sometimes not saying you get sick of hearing the same voice, but it becomes normal, so it doesn't have that same effectiveness or that motivation that comes with it, and it's just normal in I guess probably in all hawks of life.

But Popovic coming in.

Every single player that he picks, he'll want to, I guess, show them how he wants to play it, and they'll need to show him that they can fit into that model. So if they can't do that, they'll probably, you know, not be into the next squad.

So before we get into squad members and who might be picked, is there a style that Tomy Popovich has shown in previous coaching stints with A League teams that he would sort of you'd expect him to bring to this Australian side.

I think they're just very hard to beat, to be honest, They're hard working, probably look at every little inch of how they can be better, whether it's on or off the field, tactical, technical, psychological. And I think he's won the Asian Champions League, as I said, and that's kind of a similar setup to this, where it's it's one off matches. You're playing against teams that have much bigger squads, much better teams, and he won that back in what was twenty fourteen, I reckon, So he's proven that he can do it in Asia. He's obviously been a player, but he's brought along Hayden Fox, who I just touched on before Paul Oakonn and Frank Rich to be his other support staff, and I think there's a good mix there with Foxy defensively is unbelievable. Paul Oaconn was my under twenties coach. I loved him as a coach. He's probably one of my favorite coaches. He wants to play like Barcelona tiki taka football, which I think will hope hopefully help with that, you know, unlocking defenses. And Frank you Rich a goalkeeper who goalkeeper coach who was here actually Adelaide quite a few years ago.

So I think they've got a good group of stars.

Now.

The next thing is obviously choosing the players.

And you probably don't want to change it up too much to you because you, like you said two and a half weeks is in the job, players coming in and out.

You just want to get there.

You just want to probably try and get results in these games and then plan a little bit more for the next window.

So how many adelaid boys or South Australians a former Reids do we expect to see in the squad?

Yeah, good question there, great good when you'd think is a lock. Riley mcgree I would say should be in there. He's back from injury. He's played for Middlesbrough the last couple of games. He's a top top player Nestria and Kunda. I would say he has to be in there for that X factor. He's been playing with the under nineteens and the and the second team in Germany there. So besides that, you've got Casini Yange, who's I think injured or suspended anyway, Ryan Strain who's injured. I believe a one. Mcbill could be one. He'll probably be there and thereabouts. Joe Gauci one hundred percent will be in the squad. Whether he's the starting kid or not. That's probably a bit hard to.

Display it on Maddie Ryan with right now.

So he's a as roma. He's been the second keeper there. He hasn't played any minutes, which is disappointing. And Langerak is a keeper that's kind of pulled the pin and said he's retired from international football.

A lot of stuff that kind of went on behind the scenes.

He's probably our most informed goalkeeper and has been for the last five years, but he's obviously not in contention for it. So Paul Izzo should be another one Adelaide you night away, So actually you've got two of the keepers that are at Adelaide United Boys.

Is he the only one that's playing?

Did you chuck him in? He was with Popovic last year, so you just never know. There's a lot of Adelaide Boys for such a small city, small state, and we definitely punch above our weight.

We produce a lot of good football. You'll make a very good point. Well, next Thursday night we'll be on air from six thirty, about an hour away from kickoff, so we get a chance to preview that one in real depth. So looking forward to talking about all of that game next week. But let's take your calls quickly before we go around the world with some of what's happening in the Asian Champs apl you a for the league. There's so much happening. Let's go to Johnny Portagusta.

Hi John, Hi, gentlemen, Hi, this gentleman. Will let me on Channel ten the Australian game.

Yes, yes, awesome.

As I told you bout before, I've got Fox so pretty much superior somewhere around on my phone like Google this year and Google that and verbally not not doing very well otherwise, So I just hope and pro one day Football Australia and World Football please come back to Fox. Please listening because it was accessible.

I was really knew it to the.

Game, but I love the game. It is a great guy.

In Steph and you're played by game mate.

Thanks appreciate that. Hopefully it's back one day.

We'll make sure we clip this up, we send it through to the execs Football Australia and the APL and fingers crossed it does or you know what, we're just all on free to wear.

That'd probably be better for everyone. Lovely work, Johnny. All right, just before we get to what's happening in the Premier League, the Asian Champions League is on at the moment as well. We've got a couple of Bossie.

Teams in there, have we, yes, so Central Coast are in the top competition, the ACL Elite. Unfortunately they lost again. They were at home against Briam United, who are the champions of Thailand.

They went down to one.

But yeah, it's tough because there, you know, four or five games into their season. We haven't started yet, so it's hard to come up against them and actually a familiar facing Curtis Good who is an ex Melbourne City player actually popped up for Briam United. He's just signed there this season and he scored against them. And Kenneth th Ougal who's an Australian but I believe he is a local. He must have the passport there through one of his mum or his dad and he was playing for them as well, so I'm sure they both love coming back to Australia. Tripped to Central Coast there Dan in Terregle and they got the three points, so disappointing for the Mariners. And Sydney FC are in the ACL two tonight they play against KFC, I believe it is, so hopefully they can get another win. They won convincingly in the last group stage games, so hopefully they can win.

Because the more the more games they win and the.

Further those two teams go into the competitions means the more ranking points we get, so hopefully we get more spots in Asia.

All right, let's jump to the other side of the globes a Premier League updates. Who's starring?

Well, I guess you would have to say Liverpool. Are you know their top of the League right now. At Manchester City drew on the weekend against Newcastle, a very contentious decision with the penalty. Some people were saying it was some people saying it wasn't. Anthony Gordon probably went down a bit easy and I think you know, nine out of ten strikers in that position are going down and it's not up for him to get out of the way. The keeper did touch him slightly, ever so slightly. And as an Arsenal fan, I'm very happy because for them to drop points is brilliant for us. We won against Leicester City, but as I said, Liverpool a top of the table right now. It's probably not something people predicted. With a new manager, arneslot coming and taking over Yogan Klop big shoes to fill, but he seems to have am energized. They're playing really good football. They're getting the results. They've had one shock loss, but after six games to be top of the table. They're doing well in Champions League. You know, I think their fans would be very very happy.

Yeah, definitely. So five wins for Liverpool, man City and Arsenal the two place behind, and Chelsea in four and Villa in five. Just looking Tottenham for all Rosy and fans. He's sitting in eighth at the moment. Three wins, one draw, two losses, got a good three nil win against Men United.

Who just continues this point, I think, very yeah, Eric ten Hag, he was very lucky to keep his job. I think probably winning the FA Cup kept him. But you know they actually went and started searching for other managers the hierarchy there, and I think as a coach that would be the worst possible thing you could hear because everything gets out over there. You can't keep anything a secret over there. The tabloids get ahold of it. And he's probably thinking, well, if I'm getting a new con track, why are you talking to other coaches or did you just give me the new contract because none of them wanted the job or you couldn't get the right one. And I think he will be gone in the next week. I reckon if they don't get two wins out of two in the in the European game in the Premier League, with the international break coming up, that is the best time to cut ties. But and who again is flying like you said, the Aussie flag. The doubters, the naysays are all out there. After him, and he's just proved them wrong again because they had I think an XG and expected goals of about six or something ridiculous like that away at Man United. Yes they had a red card, but even before that they could have been four mila up. They're flying and it's really good to see. And as I say each week, I hope they do really well. They can come second, they can win an AFA Cup. That's fine, but yeah, really good for him to get you know, probably the media off his back because over there, same as what it is here, if the media is on your back, it does cause a little bit of issues within the squad. So fingers crossed. He keeps going on an upwards path and winning games. They played tomorrow in Europe as well, and probably the other game to mention was Chelsea d Brighton Cole Palmer. He scored four goals, which is pretty crazy in a half.

I think it's a new record. He could have scored five or six as well.

He had I think it disallowed goal, he hit the post, had a sitter in the second half, So pretty crazy game, very exciting one to watch. Not probably the best if you're a defensive minded coach, but for all your attacking minded coaches and people that just want to see goals.

That was an unbelievable game to watch. Got about sixty seconds to try and squeeze in your best takeaways from the Champions League. A couple of sore eyes the last couple of early mornings for some soccer fans around stry.

Yes, and I was one of those waking up nice and early to watch my boys Arsenal winning two nil against PSG. I think was probably one of the biggest biggest results out there. Other ones besides that, I guess you've got Liverpool again, who we said are on fire, beating Belogna to nil, A big big result away in RB Leipzig, Juventus were down a man. They ended up coming back to win Threema, so that is an amazing result. And probably in Birmingham Frostin Villa a one nil win against Bayern Munich, the German champions. Austin Villa, who probably what was it ten or so years ago when I was a lot younger, they were in and around European places. They weren't in the Champions League from what I can remember, but I could be wrong there. They're now back, they're fighting for top four again this year, probably trying to go even better and compete for the title. But to do that, what they're doing in the league and to back it up in Champions League football is amazing. So Joe Gauchez, we said he plays there, he was on the bench. I'm sure he was cheering just as loud as the rest of the crowd was. But some massive results. Make sure you go over to Stand Sports if you want to watch any of those games. And I'm excited for the next next round of that.

Yeah, certainly, Stephan, excellent work once again. We've packed so much into the show. But next week I'm super excited our soccer ros here in Adelaide on a Thursday night and we'll get to walk through all of it from six thirty next Thursday night. Great work once again, mate, good to see you. Cheers, Tugs will get you next week
