Experts say factors contributing to shoddy writing standards include the shift to computer-based learning, reduced physical activity and the decline in schools awarding “pen licences” for mastering cursive.

Concerns about messy writing in ATAR exams which students sat in November were revealed in examiners’ reports released last week by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.

Literature markers said they could not understand students’ answers if they had difficulty reading their writing.
