So last night we learned that ‘Perth’s Pet’ – Tricia the elephant – had passed away, after decades of enthralling visitors to this city’s zoo.

Even Tricia’s arrival, in a crate on Fremantle’s dockside, drew a crowd in 1963.

The initial sight of her behind concrete pillars was enthralling – and a little bit confronting.

But as she grew, so did the understanding of what she needed.
