A thick blanket of smoke has covered Perth on Sunday afternoon, causing low visibility and air quality across the City.

Prescribed burns carried out by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions prompted a smoke alert to be issued for Pickering Brook, Kalamunda and adjoining eastern areas of the Swan Coastal Plain through to the Perth CBD.

The smoke is expected to clear overnight but Emergency WA urges people to take caution in these conditions.

Residents have been told to shut their doors and windows and turn off any aircon to avoid inhaling the smoke, while motorists are advised to turn on their headlights and travel at appropriate speeds as visibility may be reduced.
