WA gas could be pumped into the east coast quicker than expected, helping alleviate concerns about ongoing energy shortfalls, a conference has been told.

Woodside Energy’s marketing and trading executive vice president Mark Abbotsford said the floating storage and regasification units now being snapped up by European nations rushing to reduce their reliance on Russian gas offered an obvious short-term quick fix to the energy crisis in south-eastern Australia.

Woodside is exploring a proposal to feed spare LNG cargoes into a gas import terminal planned for Geelong by Viva Energy. The Viva project would include a FSRU, which would convert the LNG back into natural gas for distribution via pipelines to customers.
