Thieves have smashed their way into a barber shop in Cannington, damaging the front of an ATM while trying to steal it, and taking cash and equipment before fleeing.

The business on the corner of Cecil Avenue and Lake Street was broken into about 1am on Friday.

A group of four people gained entry into the building by shattering the front window.

It is understood a small amount of cash as well as expensive equipment was stolen.

The front of an ATM was also damaged after the thieves attempted to steal the machine.

It came just weeks after the business next door was targeted in a similar-style robbery.

Police are investigating and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online.
