The Murugappan family from Biloela will leave Perth to fly back to their home in Central Queensland on Wednesday after spending years in detention.

It follows a national campaign led by Biloela locals to free the family of four who were initially detained by the Australian Border Force back in 2018.

Tamil parents Priya and Nades and their Australian-born daughters Kopika and Tharnicaa were held on Christmas Island before being moved to community detention in Perth.

The newly elected Labor government granted them bridging visas allowing them to return to Biloela where they are expected to arrive on Friday.
