They say winners are grinners, and that certainly was true at Wimbledon over night after Novak Djokovich defeated Aussie Nick Krygios.

But watching these two bro-out after the final was one of the most annoying things I’ve seen in sport for a while.

On one hand you’ve got Djokovich - the poster boy for the anti-vax movement, and on the other you have Krygios - the self-appointed bad boy of tennis who lived up to his reputation during the match.

Krygios also has an assault charge hanging over his head, brought by a former girlfriend.

He’s strenuously denied any wrongdoing. But it’s fair to say a person with an assault charge against their name is harder to blindly support than someone who doesn’t.

So if there was a way for these two plonkers to both lose at Wimbledon last night, that would have been the best outcome.

But unfortunately sport doesn’t work that way. And instead we were reminded of one of the worst aspects of sport - and that’s if you’re good enough at it, it pretty much doesn’t matter what you do off the field - or in this case - off the court.

Krygios even had a petty little dig at Wimbeldon’s strict all white dress standards by wearing a red cap at the trophy presentation.

I get it that Krygios’ carry on makes people tune in, but I don’t think I can remember an Aussie sports star that I wanted to see lose more than this tool.

But it wasn’t all bad news from the All England Lawn Tennis Club yesterday.

Perth tennis star Matt Ebden and his partner Max Purcell became the first all-Aussie pair to win the doubles at the home of tennis since the Woodies in the year 2000.

Ebden and Purcell fought back against great odds in the tournament, and showed the sort of spirit that you just love to see in your sporting heroes.

And it was a great reminder of just how many sporting heroes WA has to be proud of right now.

There’s Sam Kerr’s continued brilliance, Freo golf sensation Minjee Lee and cyclist Jai Hindley’s historic win in the giro d’italia.

So yeah, maybe Krygios isn’t the sort of sport star Aussie kids should look up to.

But for the kids here in WA, there is no shortage of better options.
