October 12 is a day that lives heavily in Australia’s collective heart.

On this day, 20 years ago, holiday makers from all over the world, including Australia, packed out two of Bali’s most popular nightclubs - the sari club and paddy’s bar.

They were people on footy trips, family getaways and holidays with friends.

Just after 11pm, the fun night out turned to a nightmare when a bomb went off in the middle of paddy’s bar - seconds later another bomb, this time at the Sari Club.

202 people were killed, 88 of them Australian. Countless others injured and traumatised by the devastation left behind.

20 years later, at the site of that devastation, sits a memorial with the names of those killed, where Paddy’s bar once was.

Today, hundreds of Australians have travelled to Bali to pay their respects. 7NEWS reporter Ben Downie is in Bali too.
