What appears to have happened in the last week or so is that Perth has officially rejoined the rest of the world, after hermetically sealing ourselves off for a couple of years while the planet went to hell in a handbasket. 

After his unrivalled success in the WA political charts, Mark McGowan took his band on the road for a world tour – starting in Italy and ending in London – where he hopes the lure of quokkas selfies and corking weather will be enough to kickstart our tourist economy again. 

The sight of Alan Joyce and the Premier sharing a gelato on the steps of a Dreamliner was all a bit bizzaro world – after the pair had traded barbs over WA’s hardline border. 

But Alan needs us and we need Alan. And his planes – if we going to attract all those for workers to pick our fruit – and drive our ambulances – in the coming months and years. 

And while MM was in Rome, our other shiny new leader – Anthony Albanese – has also been on the road again, and also mending fences. 

First it was in France, where he instilled some more entente cordiale with French President Emannuel Macron 

And then last night, Albo was on the streets of Ukraine– offering solidarity, and $100 million in future aid. 

Those images will not only solidify the new PM’s standing here, it will strengthen his standing over there immeasurably. 

What Russia and Putin might think is another thing. And China is another thing again.
