Treasury Defends Decision to Withhold Grant Funds to Municipalities

View descriptionShare

The National Treasury has defended its decision to temporarily withhold 13.5 billion rand equitable share transfer to 69 municipalities. The National Treasury accompanied by the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana were in Parliament to brief a joint meeting of the four committees of the institution about the decision they have taken. Treasury says initially there were 99 municipalities out of the 267 in the country, whose funding was supposed to be withheld. However, the figure has since been decreased to 69 because some of them complied with their revenue requirements. For our Sunday Discussion, we are now joined on the line by Zamo Gwala, Chief Officer for Municipal Finance and Fiscal Policy together with Zukiswa Kota from Imali Yethu, a coalition of civil society organisations working with the South African National Treasury to make budget information more accessible...but first here a listener voicenotes and comments on the matter...
