Government has confirmed that the decision taken by US President Donald Trump to impose 30 per cent tariffs against South Africa has nullified the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Trade, Industry and Competition minister, Parks Tau told journalists on Friday that South Africa will engage the US administration on how the tariffs were calculated. AGOA is a legislation that was approved by the U.S. Congress in May 2000 to assist the economies of sub-Saharan Africa and to improve economic relations between the United States and the region. The tariffs leave a chunk of South Africa's industry that are reliant on US trade reeling from the loss of duty free and preferential access to the US market. For more Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Adv.
