Latest ICJ ruling strengthens ICC case against Israeli leaders

View descriptionShare

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in Rafah after the World Court agreed with South Africa that the situation and facts on the ground had changed since its last orders in January and March. In its new order of provisional measures, the Court says it considered, in conformity with its obligations under the Genocide Convention, that Israel must immediately halt its military offensive and any other action in the Rafah Governate which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza "conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part". Friday's decision marked the third time this year the 15-judge panel has issued preliminary orders seeking to rein in the death toll and alleviate humanitarian suffering in Gaza. For reaction Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Professor Hennie Strydom, International Law Expert at the University of Johannesburg
