The news of the winding up of ArcelorMittal South Africa long steel business operations in Newcastle Works and Vereeniging , does not bode well for the South African industrialization agenda. This is according to Don Consultancy Group , Chief Economist , Chifi Mhango. The closure set to take effect at the end of January, will result in approximately 3,500 direct job losses, with industry experts warning of far more extensive damage to the broader economy. FEDUSA trade unions represented in the Public Service Coordinating Burgaining Council, together with the South African Police Union (SAPU) are expected to lead a protest march TODAY to the offices of the Government's Employees Medical Scheme's head office in Pretoria. This follows the implementation of a nine-point-five percent increase in medical aid membership contributions. Political Analyst Professor, Ntsikelelo Breakfast says he hopes the interventions announced by President Ramaphosa in his SONA speech to fix the water crisis and the state of local government will bear fruit. In dealing with the current water crisis faced by a number of municipalities across the country, Ramaphosa announced action plans. The establishment of a national water crisis committee and the litigation against municipalities for contravening the provisions of the National Water Act, primarily the unlawful discharges of pollution were amongst some of the top priorities. Burundian President, Evariste Ndayishimiye has officially taken over as the new African Union chairperson. He succeeded Angolan President, João Lourenço. African leaders are meeting in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa for the 39th ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU.
