Weekly Catch Up It has been in South African wallets and drawers since 1980, but the green barcoded ID book’s days are officially numbered. The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that South Africa is rapidly moving to phase out the green ID book after nearly five decades in circulation, with the document set to expire and no longer be recognised as valid identification from 31 March 2028. The reason is clear. The green ID book has long been linked to identity theft, illegal migration and smuggling, making it a security risk that the country can no longer afford to maintain. The Smart ID Card is the future and Home Affairs wants every South African to make the switch before the deadline arrives. So today we want to know, are you still carrying your green ID book or have you already made the transition to the Smart ID Card? And if you have not made the switch yet, what is stopping you? Because 31 March 2028 may feel far away, but the queues at Home Affairs have a way of making time move a lot faster than you think.

The Weekend Special Mix

Weekly Catch Up If someone asked you right now to name the most essential person in your life, your brain would probably jump straight to your spouse, your parent or whoever is saved as your ICE contact. They are the foundation and we are not taking anything away from them today. But today we want to talk about a completely different kind of essential person. The unexpected puzzle pieces. The people who are not in your family WhatsApp group but who somehow hold your daily world together in ways you never fully appreciated until you really thought about it. The car guard who reads your mood before you even park and sends you off with a wave that somehow makes everything feel lighter. The mme wa magwinya who already knows your order and asks about your week like she genuinely wants to know. The Uber driver whose three-minute conversation completely resets your worst day. Even that one person posting Bible verses you blue-tick in the community group, but somehow need to see. They are not on your medical aid. They would not make the speech at your funeral. But without them, the puzzle just does not feel complete.

Rep Your Region Who needs a passport when you have a plate? Chef Naledi Toona, Head Chef at Alur Midrand, culinary consultant, food brand ambassador, educator and official ambassador for the Marine Stewardship Council, joins the show to take us on a culinary road trip that crosses continents without ever leaving Gauteng. An academic award-winning chef and familiar face on South African television, Chef Naledi has mastered the art of marrying beloved local South African staples like mogodu and chicken feet with bold Latin American street food flavours, creating dishes that travel between two continents in every single bite. From sustainable seafood advocacy to consulting for lodges and small hospitality businesses, Chef Naledi is as passionate about where food comes from as she is about where it can take you. Put away your passport, pick up a plate and let Chef Naledi do the rest.

The Goings On Katlego Malatji, Director of Southern Africa Repertoire at Sony Music Africa, joins the show to unpack the cultural significance of this broadcast and the crucial role that major record labels play in taking local sounds from backroom and bedroom studios all the way to national television screens. From the streets of Soweto to a sold-out FNB Stadium to the homes of millions of South Africans tonight, the Scorpion Kings story is one of the most remarkable in South African music history. Do not miss it.

The Goings On  In the 1990’s, the Girl Power movement rallied young girls to shake-off outdated ideas of femininity and embrace a confident, independent, and powerful self-image. 30 years on, it may need to make a comeback.

WeeklyCatchUp  Escaping Mgowoville: what do you turn to for guidance in tough times?

Weekend Special Mix It is that time of the morning where the tempo drops and the feelings rise. The king of R&B and Hip Hop on the Weekend Special, DJ Masilo is in the mix with a soundtrack for the slow dancers, the daydreamers and anyone who has ever loved and lost. With a gift for blending popular local sounds with crowd-pleasing classics and a commitment to keeping the vibe alive from the first track to the last, DJ Masilo turns every mix into a moment. Close your eyes and let the music take you there.

Rep Your Region Johannesburg is a city that never stops evolving, shaped by its people, its skylines and the three ridges that carve out its iconic landscape. At the heart of it all sits Westcliff, one of the city's most storied suburbs, home for over a century to Johannesburg's wealthiest and most powerful, and since 1997, home to one of the most iconic hotels in the country. Chef Rudi Liebenberg, Executive Chef of the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff Johannesburg, joins the show to take us inside the kitchen of a hotel that has been feeding the city's most discerning guests for nearly three decades. From the history and soul of the Westcliff ridge to the flavours, philosophy and inspiration that define the culinary experience at one of Johannesburg's most celebrated addresses, this is a conversation about food, place and the stories that make a city truly iconic.

The Goings On The countdown is on and the excitement is building. The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz 2026 is just one week away, taking place from 25 to 26 September at the Sandton Convention Centre, and the lineup is nothing short of extraordinary. From global icons Kamasi Washington, Angélique Kidjo and Floetry to South African legends Thandiswa Mazwai, Afrika Mkhize, Judith Sephuma and Ndabo Zulu, alongside Themba, Nubya Garcia, Ibrahim Maalouf, Melanie Scholtz and 40 world-class acts in total, this year's festival promises to be an unforgettable celebration of jazz in all its forms. Festival Producer Mantwa Chinoamadi joins the show to take us behind the scenes, share how preparations are going, give us a taste of what to expect on the day and reveal whether there is something a little extra special on the 2026 Joy of Jazz calendar. If you have not yet secured your spot at Sandton Convention Centre, now is the time.

Weekly Catch Up Love does not always arrive the way we planned it. Sometimes it walks in through a door you almost did not open, sits next to you on a taxi you almost did not take or shows up as the very person you were trying to avoid. Sometimes it is as simple and as beautiful as the boy or girl next door who was there all along. Today we want to hear your love story, the awkward, the perfect, the unexpected and the unforgettable moment when you first laid eyes on the person who would change your life. Did it happen by chance at a place you had never been to before? Was there a matchmaker involved who needs to take full credit? And how long did it take before you knew, deep down, that this was the one?

Weekend Special Mix Get out of bed, bula circle and turn up the volume because Fang Darhythm is back with an Afro Tech mix to jumpstart your Saturday. A defining voice in soulful house and Afrotech for over 15 years, Fang Darhythm's musical journey has taken him from Johannesburg to Koffiefontein and Secunda, with rhythm as the one constant that never left his side. From curating family gatherings with cassettes and CDs to discovering soulful house in the late 90s and building a sound shaped by Jazz, Kwaito and Afro-Pop, this is a DJ whose roots run deep and whose music hits even deeper. Your Saturday just got a whole lot better.

Rep Your Region It is Heritage Month and this year's national theme, "Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us," is a powerful reminder that South Africa's story belongs to all of us. From the sites and struggle history that shaped our democracy to the traditions, rituals and indigenous knowledge passed down through generations, our living heritage is the foundation of who we are as a people. Amos Mulaudzi, Manager for Living Heritage and Tourism Development at the National Heritage Council, joins the show to help us unpack that shared story. An intangible cultural heritage specialist who has spent his career identifying, documenting and safeguarding the traditions and indigenous knowledge that make South Africa truly unique, Amos is the kind of custodian our heritage deserves. This Heritage Month on The Weekend Special, we are telling the stories, visiting the sites and honouring the struggle history that defines us. Because knowing where we come from is the only way to understand where we are going.

The Goings On Johannesburg Pride began in 1990 as South Africa's first march for gay rights, making it one of the oldest Pride events on the continent and older than South Africa's democracy itself. More than three decades later, it remains a powerful symbol of resistance, visibility and celebration, now led by Kaye Ally, who joined the Johannesburg Pride leadership in 2013 and has been revitalising Africa's oldest Pride movement ever since. As founder of the Pride of Africa Foundation, a Pan-African umbrella platform championing LGBTQ+ rights, visibility and legal protection across the continent, Kaye has dedicated her leadership to ensuring that the stories, struggles and triumphs of Africa's LGBTQ+ community are not just celebrated but preserved for future generations. This Heritage Month, Pride of Africa has launched a visual campaign to document the community, and with the march on 31 October fast approaching, Kaye joins the show to talk about history, memory, the importance of preservation and what South Africans can look forward to this Pride season. Because heritage belongs to everyone.

Weekly Catch Up South Africa's scam epidemic is getting worse and the numbers are alarming. Banking apps now account for nearly 89% of all digital banking crime cases in the country, with total client losses topping R2.4 billion. Online marketplace scams are leading the pack, with TransUnion data showing that 33% of South African digital fraud victims were scammed by third-party sellers on legitimate e-commerce and social platforms. And while mobile app fraud averages around R21,800 per incident, internet banking fraud costs victims four times as much, averaging R73,500 per case due to invoice and supplier mandate scams. Perhaps most surprisingly, Gen Z and Millennials, the generations who grew up online, represent a large and growing portion of victims, targeted through AI-generated phishing attacks and fake job and investment ads that are increasingly difficult to detect. Today we want to hear your story. Have you fallen victim to a scammer? Was the Judas closer than you expected, perhaps a loved one who collaborated with the fraudster to get to you? Who did they impersonate, how did they get you and how have you emotionally recovered from the experience? Because behind every statistic is a real person who trusted someone they should not have, and your story could save someone else from making the same mistake.

The Weekend Special Mix It is that time of the morning where the music slows down and the memories speed up. The king of R&B and Hip Hop on the Weekend Special, DJ Masilo is in the mix and this one is for the slow dancers, the daydreamers and anyone who has ever loved and lost. With a gift for reading the room and a commitment to keeping the vibe alive from the first track to the last, DJ Masilo turns every mix into a moment worth remembering. Sit back, close your eyes and let the music take you somewhere beautiful.

Rep Your Region When we talk about preserving our heritage, there is no tool more powerful than the languages we speak. Language carries our history, our humour and our identity. Yet in mass media, advertising and corporate boardrooms, English still dominates the conversation while South Africa's rich tapestry of indigenous languages is too often treated as an afterthought rather than a creative opportunity. Thembalethu Msibi, co-founder and Chief Creative Partner at BlackSwan and this year's Jury President for the iPendoring Awards, joins the show to unpack how we shift that narrative. With over two decades of building culturally rooted and emotionally sharp campaigns for some of South Africa's biggest brands, Thembalethu knows better than most what it means to speak to people in the language that lives in their chest rather than just their head. As Judge President of South Africa's home of indigenous language creativity, she is now leading the charge to celebrate and elevate the work that proves our mother tongues are not just worth preserving. They are worth building entire industries around. This Heritage Month, the conversation starts in our own languages.

The Goings On As South Africa marks Heritage Month, there is no better time to celebrate the food that has fed communities, built businesses and told the story of township life better than almost anything else. The kota, also known as sphatlo or skhambane depending on where you are from, started as a humble quarter loaf filled with mince and mash on a Soweto street corner and has grown into a culinary institution and a powerful economic engine for local entrepreneurs across the country. Sidwell Tshingilane, founder of the Soweto Kota Festival, joins the show to talk about all things kota, sphatlo and sometimes even bunny chow. Now in its ninth year and attracting over 20,000 visitors and more than 50 kota outlets, the festival has become one of the most beloved celebrations of South African food culture on the calendar. From the origins of the kota to the entrepreneurs building real businesses around it and the cultural pride that comes with every bite, this is a Heritage Month conversation that will make you hungry, proud and inspired all at once.

Weekly Catch Up First it was the creative outfits, then it was the colourful braids and now it is the permanent stamp of their coolness. Your teenager has sat you down and asked for a tattoo or a piercing, and suddenly you are the uncool parent standing between them and their self-expression. How did that conversation go in your house? Some parents drew a hard line immediately. Others found themselves in a surprisingly deep philosophical debate about body autonomy with a fifteen year old. And then there are those whose children already know about the tattoo hidden somewhere on mum or dad's body, which makes the whole conversation just a little more complicated. Today we want to know how you handled it. Did you say yes, no or maybe when you are older? Do your children know you have ink of your own and did that make it harder to say no? At what age do you believe it is no longer your decision to make? And for the parents who said yes, do you regret it or are you proud of how you handled it? Because the conversation around body modification, parenting and personal expression is more layered than it looks, and we want to hear your story.

The Khula Collective officially launches today, Saturday 29 August, with an ambitious mission to redefine youth development in South Africa. To mark Women's Month, Charnelle joins the Big Breakfast Show to share what the Khula Collective is, why she built it and what she hopes it will mean for the next generation of young South Africans who are still asking themselves the same question she once did. Who do I want to be?

In The Mix Turn up the volume, move the room divider and dance on the table because Fang Darhythm is in the mix and the morning just got a whole lot better. A defining voice in soulful house and Afrotech for over 15 years, Fang Darhythm's musical journey has taken him from Johannesburg to Koffiefontein and Secunda, with rhythm as the one constant that never left his side. From curating family gatherings with cassettes and CDs to formally training in Radio and Sound Engineering, travelling on borrowed equipment and earning his place alongside The Rhythm Sessions on Kaya FM, this is a DJ whose story is as rich as his sound. Groove is in the morning and Fang Darhythm is serving every single drop of it.

Rep Your Region She started with roughly two hundred Rand worth of marula oil and a home remedy passed down by her mother-in-law, and built Portia M Skin Solutions into a beauty empire sitting on more than 2,000 retail shelves across South Africa and 14 African countries. But Portia Mngomezulu is far from done. This Women's Month, she joins our SA Women Chefs Profile Series with a brand new chapter to share, the opening of Divine Sunset Venue in Midrand, a stunning new home for weddings, celebrations and business gatherings that is already turning heads. Joining her this morning is Divine Sunset's Executive Chef Wincan Mohlala, the culinary force bringing the flavours and vision of the venue to life. From skincare to celebrations, from marula oil to the menu, Portia Mngomezulu is the kind of entrepreneur who simply does not stop building. This is one of the most inspiring Women's Month conversations we have had and we are here for every single moment of it.

Radio 2000, in partnership with Harties Boat Company, presents the first ever Her 2000 Femme Fest Getaway, a ladies only celebration taking place at Harties Harbour on Sunday 30 August 2026. And joining us to give us a taste of what to expect is none other than Ntombi Meso, host of Radio 2000's weekday midmorning show Better Together and panel moderator for the Femme Fest. In The Mix It's that time of the morning, the one that makes you want to slow dance in your kitchen or think about the one that got away. The king of R&B and Hip-Hop on the Weekend Special, DJ Masilo, is in the mix and turning the temperature all the way up with crowd-pleasing classics and local sounds that hit different on a weekend morning. Grab someone you love, or someone you miss, and let the music do the rest.

Rep Your Region This Women's Month, our SA Women Chefs Profile Series heads to Thokoza in the East Rand, and things are about to get deliciously sweet! Chef Nhlanhla Dlamini, founder of Botlabutsi and Kwa Chef Nhlanhla, joins the show to share how her home-based baking business has grown into a celebration of community, heritage and the unstoppable spirit of South African women in the kitchen. From beautiful cakes and cupcakes to decadent desserts, Chef Nhlanhla is not just baking treats, she is also hosting food and baking lessons to help other women start their own businesses and build their own legacies. The East Rand is in full force this weekend, and we are absolutely here for it.

The Goings On Seventy years ago, 20,000 women marched on the Union Buildings and changed the course of South African history. Seven decades on, the numbers tell a complicated story. South African women hold more boardroom seats than ever and lead senior management teams at some of the highest rates in the world, yet only 8% of CEOs in the JSE Top 200 are women. So why do women get so close to the top and still can't break through? Bonnie Maponya, acting managing executive at EmpowaWomen, joins the show to unpack the invisible barriers that keep women from the corner office and what South Africa must do in 2026 to finally change that, in honour of every woman who marched so we could lead.

Birthday Dedications It's your day and Sammy Fever wants to celebrate YOU! Send us a WhatsApp voice note, call or drop us a message, and we'll make sure your special person gets the birthday shout-out they.

Waar Was D'Jy She designs buildings and breaks barriers in equal measure. Katlego Malebye, Pretoria-born candidate architect, UJ triple-degree graduate and Miss South Africa 2026 Top 19 finalist, joins the show to share her incredible journey to the crown! Through her initiative Build for Change, Katlego is bridging the worlds of design and social justice, proving that architecture can be a powerful tool for community transformation. Beauty, brains and a blueprint for change, Katlego Malebye is one to watch.

Weekly Catch Up Remember when a matric dance meant saving up for a nice dress and hoping your date had a decent car? Those days are long gone! A new wave of matric dance extravagance is sweeping schools across South Africa. Think supercars for hire, catered pre-parties, custom and designer outfits and photo shoots that rival celebrity events. The pressure on parents to deliver the perfect send-off for their child has never been greater or more expensive! This morning we want to know how much you actually spent on your child's matric dance, how it compares to your own back in the day, and whether the social pressure to keep up with other parents is pushing families to spend money they simply don't have. Because somewhere between the corsage and the supercar, the matric dance stopped being about the kids and started being about the parents.

Weekly Catch-Up When we were young we thought everything would last forever, the kiddies' menu obsession, the defining soundtrack of our era, and that one best friend who swore they'd be at our wedding no matter what! But as the saying goes, "seasons change, mad things rearrange." Some friendships end in a blaze of drama, some are poisoned by betrayal, and most simply fade away quietly under the weight of distance and life. But then there are those rare, golden friendships that survive it all, the moves, the marriages, the babies, the falling outs and the growing up. Today we want to celebrate those friendships! How long is your longest friendship? What has been your secret to keeping it alive? And have marriage and children brought you closer or quietly pushed you apart?

Every household has that one parent whose look alone can stop a child dead in their tracks, no words needed! But in other homes, even the loudest voice and firmest hand can't get the kids to budge. So who really holds the power in your house? Is it Mom's silent stare that sends everyone running, or Dad's deep voice that restores instant order? Today we want to know who the chief whip of your household is, what it actually takes to get your children to listen, and whether the strictest parent is always the most effective one, because discipline looks different in every home, and we want to hear your story.

Weekly Catch Up The cost of living is through the roof — but so is the pressure to look like everything is just fine! A July 2026 DebtBusters survey reveals that 72% of South Africans are stressed about money, more than half are spending over 40% of their take-home pay on debt repayments, and households owe the equivalent of 62.5% of their gross annual income in debt. Yet somehow, the Instagram posts still look flawless and the cars keep getting bigger! Today's roundtable asks the real question — how far have YOU gone to keep up with the Joneses, the Ngwenyas and the Molefes? And is it time we finally had an honest conversation about the true cost of keeping up appearances?

In The Mix Get out of bed, Bula Circle, and turn up the volume — Fang Darhythm is taking over the mix! With over 15 years as a defining voice in soulful house and Afro Tech, this formally trained sound engineer and radio broadcaster has built his craft from cassette collections and borrowed equipment to Kaya FM radio shows with The Rhythm Sessions. From Johannesburg to Koffiefontein and Secunda, rhythm has always been his anchor — and this Saturday morning, he's bringing that energy straight to your speakers.

The Goings On On Mandela Day 2026, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is calling on people everywhere to answer a timeless challenge — because where there is poverty, suffering and inequality, silence is not an option. This year's theme, "It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity," echoes Madiba's powerful parting message to the world in 2009: "It is in your hands now." Razia Saleh, Head of Archives and Research at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, joins the show to unpack what that call means today and how every South African can turn 67 minutes into a lifetime of impact.
