The pair discuss her story as well as the chapter she wrote in the book ‘Visionary Women Leaders’ entitled ‘Passionate Pursuer of Purpose’.
KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Purpose is something that my life is all about, it’s something that is my constant message, it’s my what, my where, my why. To be in a two-year span where a lot of people have lost their passion, lost their purpose and some don’t even know what their purpose is, I have been speaking the message of being a passionate pursuer of purpose. In the midst of the pandemic many have gotten lost, stagnated, immobilised, stuck, so we want to continue to pursue purpose.
  • My youth programme, Healing Pain Through the Arts, came to be because I saw my son use his music to help heal some of the pain that he had experienced in his life. We work with young people all over, in various schools, colleges and platforms and we open up collaborative opportunities to give young people a voice. It’s about educating our community, celebrating the gifts and talents of our youth, and about cultivating love and healing in our community.
  • Young people deal with the real, whereas sometimes adults might not want to deal with it head on, they don’t have that problem, they’re gonna deal with the real and they’re gonna tell you the real. And sometimes it might need a filter on it, but that is the world in which we live today. We live in a world full of creative, intelligent, very very smart young people, but on the flipside, they sometimes don’t have the wherewithal to go through a lot – they will walk away from things if something is not working right whereas we’re loyal to a fault.
  • There’s a changing of the guard between young and old where the young people don’t respect or revere the elders and the elders don’t want to hear from the young people because they feel like they’re disrespectful, they need to be seen and not heard, they need to stay in their place. One of the things I’ve been working on is a programme to be able to bridge the gap and rebuilt the bridge that has divided the generations and be able to have the young people understand that they have to hear the adults, not just take what they have to offer and the older generation needs to be able to hear the younger generation, we have to give them the opportunity to know that they’re valued, that we need them. How can we effectively work together with them if we shun them? Bad communication has to continue to be developed and sharpened.

BEST MOMENTS
‘I’m a passionate person, people say they can feel my passion, even if we’re talking over the phone.’
‘Even if we’re pursuing purpose, we still have to have those moments where we Netflix and chill, because that’s a part of being able to continue the pursuit of purpose is making sure that you are taking care of yourself and resetting.’
‘Young people will take on any topic, which they valiantly did during the Covid-19 pandemic, all topics that were difficult to broach, they handled it with great excellence.’
‘The world is changing, we’re shaping a new generation of leaders. We say our young people are leaders of tomorrow but I beg to differ, they really are leaders of today, they’re entrepreneurs, they’re running businesses, they’re graduating out of college in their teenage years. We have to be able to not be afraid of the changing of the guard.’
