Funding and collaborative, intersectional approaches are crucial to achieving malaria elimination, particularly in Africa, where the disease continues to pose a significant health threat. According to the 2024 World Malaria Report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), over 2.2 billion malaria cases and 12.7 million deaths have been averted globally in the last two decades.

However, progress remains fragile, with countries like South Africa experiencing a rise in cases and deaths in 2023, despite decades of decline. Persistent funding shortfalls, fragile health systems, and environmental factors such as climate change exacerbate the challenge, underscoring the need for sustained investment and multi-sectoral partnerships to combat malaria effectively.
