It unfolds like a conversation between friends encouraging each other to step up and commit before it is too late, while also carrying the emotional weight of someone admitting that life simply feels incomplete without the person they love. Known for creating and shaping the Gqomtrap sound, WTF continues to push South African music into exciting territory while staying connected to its roots. Formed in Durban in 2013 by Mnqobi Charles and Lindokuhle Gcwensa, the group has built a reputation for energetic performances and fearless experimentation, working with artists including AKA, Cassper Nyovest, DJ Maphorisa, DJ Tira, KO, Blxckie as well as the late Riky Rick. With Mawungekho, the group once again proves that South African music can honour tradition while still sounding fresh, bold and completely original.

Soosi, also known as Galandi Shafiq, has become one of Uganda’s fast rising online entertainers through his weekly “This Is How I Died” skits and his now famous bread munching antics during Premier League matchdays. Born and raised in Kampala, the former meteorologist has built a strong social media following by turning ordinary everyday experiences into comedy that resonates with audiences across Africa and beyond. Through platforms like TikTok, Instagram and X, Soosi’s sharp humour and relatable storytelling have attracted millions of views and a rapidly growing fanbase across the continent and in the diaspora. His rise in the comedy space has also opened doors for major collaborations, including working alongside Nigerian comedy star Sabinus. As his online presence continues to grow, Soosi is using social media as a powerful launchpad to build a long term career in entertainment while bringing Ugandan humour to a wider audience.

Fresh off reaching the African National Top 200 All Genres Chart, Calvin Fallo returns with a brand new single titled Everybody Wanna Be In Love. Born Katlego Mashilane in Pretoria, widely recognised as the birthplace of Amapiano, Calvin has spent more than a decade helping shape the sound and direction of the genre. From the township streets to international audiences, his music continues to carry the soulful energy and rhythm that have made Amapiano one of Africa’s biggest cultural exports. His latest release Everybody Wanna Be In Love blends smooth Dance production with Swahili lyrics, creating a musical connection between South Africa and East Africa. The track is built for both radio listeners and dancefloor crowds, while still holding onto the authentic township influence that defines Calvin’s sound. Alongside new work such as the Afro House collaboration If Its Not Broken Dont Fix It EP, Calvin Fallo continues to show his range as an artist and producer while strengthening his influence across the African music scene. Following the success of his month of love anthem Bang’bonile, Xduppy returns with a brand new single, Lwetse. Released earlier this year, Bang’bonile became a major talking point after surpassing 2 million streams and inspiring nearly 20,000 TikTok creations within its first week. Now, Xduppy is shifting the focus toward ambition, hunger and the pursuit of success with Lwetse. Borrowed from the Sesotho word bolwetse, meaning illness, the song compares the drive to chase money and success to something impossible to shake off. Built as both a club anthem and a street soundtrack, the single is already gaining momentum online through a growing TikTok dance challenge. Amapiano artist Mordecai continues to build his name within South Africa’s music scene following the release of his 16 track album Mamello with collaborations featuring Yumbs, JayJayy, Blue Pappi, Rory Diamondz, Sandy6eats and Thatohatsi. Led by the standout single Marato Fela, meaning “love only” the project encapsulates an emotionally driven sound that has become closely associated with Mordecai’s music. Since making his debut with Product of My Craft in 2024, Mordecai has steadily expanded his catalogue with releases including Whispers of Love, Blondeca and the deluxe edition of Blondeca. Along the way, he earned platinum recognition for tracks such as Ngeke n’Believe’e, Phesheya, and Di Kgomo, establishing himself as one of the genre’s consistent voices. Mamello sees him pushing his sound further while remaining grounded in the style that built his following, drawing inspiration from his upbringing in the east of Johannesburg.

Africa’s hospitality industry is experiencing significant growth, with more than 577 hotel and resort projects currently in development across the continent, adding over 104,000 rooms to the pipeline. Countries including Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Africa are among the major contributors to this expansion, driven by rising travel demand and growing interest in business travel along with tourism. Industry experts say the rapid pace of development is also placing pressure on construction timelines, supplier networks and procurement systems as operators work to meet international hospitality standards while navigating local challenges. At the same time, hotels across Africa are increasingly focusing on energy efficiency, water management and cost effective operations as part of their long term planning. One of Africa’s biggest cultural festivals, MTN Bushfire, has officially revealed its full lineup for the 2026 edition, bringing together a mix of music, poetry, theatre and dance from across the continent and beyond. Taking place from the of May 29th to the 31st at the Malkerns Valley in Eswatini, this year’s festival will feature performances from artists including Uncle Waffles, Moonchild Sanelly and many more. Known for celebrating African creativity and cultural exchange, the festival continues to attract thousands of attendees every year. Since launching in 2007, MTN Bushfire has grown into one of the continent’s most recognised live events, drawing visitors from around the world to experience its unique mix of music, art, activism and community spirit. Across parts of Europe and the United States, these professionals have already become a more common part of film and television productions, but discussions are now growing around whether African productions should also begin adopting similar practices more widely. In the African context, where conversations around boundaries, consent, workplace culture, and power dynamics are often influenced by cultural expectations and industry pressures, many believe intimacy coaches could help create safer and more transparent working environments for performers. South African artist Muzi has joined forces with acclaimed singer Msaki for a new single titled Khethile, with the nostalgic sound of 1980s African pop music. Inspired in part by the musical style associated with legendary producer Chicco Twala, Khethile leans into groove, emotion and rich African musical textures while creating a sound that stands firmly in the present. The release also offers another glimpse into Muzi’s upcoming album Electric Zululand, a project expected to continue showcasing his ability to move across genres while staying connected to African musical identity. Alongside Msaki, the album will feature collaborations with artists including Zoë Modiga and Bongeziwe Mabandla. South African artist Zee Nxumalo is entering a new chapter in her career with the release of Izinja Zam, a four track EP that explores themes of spirituality, identity, growth and personal reflection through the sounds of 3 step and Amapiano. Anchored by the single Guqa, the project presents a more intentional and emotionally grounded side of the artist, moving beyond energetic club records into music shaped by purpose and introspection. The EP features collaborations with artists including Dlala Thukzin, Sino Msolo, Young Stunna, Blxckie and K.O, while also continuing to build on Zee’s growing influence within South Africa and internationally. Rapper and entrepreneur Nadia Nakai stepped into the beauty when she officially launched her makeup brand Naked Without, also known as Bragga Cosmetics, after spending more than a year developing the products behind the scenes. Excited about the new chapter, Nadia announced on social media that the range would officially become available in stores and online, describing it as a personal passion project built entirely on her own without a brand partnership. From foundation products to fan favourite lip glosses, the launch reflected her desire to create makeup that felt simple, lightweight, and easy to use for everyday women. While the continent is home to a rich literary tradition and a growing community of readers, publishers continue to face high production costs, VAT on books in some countries, expensive imports and complex distribution networks that make access uneven. Printing is often costly, shipping across borders can be more difficult than exporting overseas, and infrastructure gaps continue to shape how books reach readers. At the same time, digital publishing has opened new pathways, with mobile technology creating fresh opportunities for ebooks, audiobooks and online platforms, even as data costs and limited connectivity remain barriers. For the first time, a comprehensive mapping of the book industry across 54 African countries has been conducted by UNESCO, offering a detailed picture of both the sector’s strengths and its structural weaknesses. The findings show that Africa accounted for 5.4 percent of the global publishing market in 2023, generating an estimated 7 billion US dollars in annual revenue. With the right policy reforms, investment and stronger distribution systems, the continent’s book industry could unlock opportunities worth up to 18.5 billion US dollars, with educational publishing alone representing a potential 13 billion dollar market. What happens when archives are no longer silent collections stored behind glass but spaces you can walk through, hear and experience for yourself? From September to December 2026, audiences across South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi will encounter immersive exhibitions that transform historical records into living encounters. Futures_Past Amplifying Memory with Immersive Technologies is led by the French Institute of South Africa in partnership with Electric South and a network of cultural institutions and archives. Supported by the Embassy of France in South Africa, Lesotho, and Malawi and funded by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the project brings artists and archivists together to reimagine how memory is shared. Over several months, creative teams will work with six archives, including the !Khwa ttu San Culture & Education Centre, GALA Queer Archive, Iziko Museums of South Africa, Music Crossroads Malawi, National Film, Video and Sound Archives and the Royal Archives, Museum and Information Centre. Using virtual and augmented reality, spatial sound and interactive installation, the teams will create exhibitions that explore themes of exile, activism, water, oral tradition, apartheid history and royal memory. One Groove has announced the official line up for the 2026 AmaGroove Residency, set to take place from 22nd to 29th of March at the Kromdraai Impact and Co Creativity Hub in South Africa. Now in its third year, AmaGroove has grown into a respected songwriting residency that brings together artists, producers and vocalists from South Africa, Denmark and beyond for a week of shared creation and cultural exchange. South African music icon Sipho Hotstix Mabuse is set to lead the Unity Soweto Concert 2026, taking place on 14th of June at Orlando Stadium. Born and raised in Soweto, Mabuse has spent more than five decades shaping the country’s sound, first as a young drummer with The Beaters, later known as Harari and then as a solo artist whose music became part of the soundtrack of a generation. His presence at this year’s concert connects today’s audiences with a powerful chapter in South Africa’s musical and political history. Known for timeless songs such as Burn Out and Jive Soweto, Mabuse earned his nickname Hotstix for his skill on the drums, but his talent stretches across multiple instruments and genres. Beyond the stage, he has also inspired many through his personal journey, returning to complete his matric at the age of 60 to fulfil a lifelong goal. He joins us instudio.

A personal statement has been issued by Dr Lindelani Mkhize in his capacity as a founding member of Joyous Celebration. This follows recent media reports, including an article published in the Sunday Times on 14 February 2026, referencing allegations about the finances and governance of the organisation. Dr Mkhize has firmly rejected any suggestion of improper or unlawful conduct, stating that the matters raised stem from longstanding governance disputes that date back several years. He maintains that he has never transacted on the company bank account and has not exercised control over payments, noting that payment administration was conducted through the Joyous office under its duly appointed bank transactor. In his statement, Dr Mkhize outlines efforts he says he has taken to seek clarity on accumulated liabilities and financial controls, including requesting historical bank statements and instructing an independent accountant to review records. He confirms that the matter is now subject to formal arbitration and says he will not litigate governance disputes in the media. Created by health innovator and social entrepreneur Titilope Olotu, PADÍ is a sustainable disposable menstruation pad made from biodegradable banana fibre and paired with a data tracking app designed to deliver reproductive health insights. The innovation turns menstrual blood into a source of diagnostic information, allowing users to monitor biomarkers linked to infections, iron levels and hormone imbalances in a non-invasive way. By combining biosensing technology with a mobile platform, Titilope and her team aim to support earlier detection of conditions such as urinary tract infections, anemia, PCOS and endometriosis, shifting the focus from delayed treatment. With backing from organisations including UNESCO, Chegg, PERIOD, Dream.Org and The Diana Award, PADÍ also responds to the environmental burden created by conventional plastic based menstrual products that take centuries to decompose. Through the nonprofit initiative Period Padi, the project has already reached thousands of students across the United States, Nigeria and India with menstrual education and banana fibre pad distribution, while preparing for regulatory approval and clinical trials. Across South Africa, boys are still being raised under an outdated code of masculinity that tells them to hide their emotions, face challenges alone and see gentleness as weakness. From a young age, they’re taught that toughness equals strength and that showing empathy or fear makes them less of a man but this emotional repression comes at a high cost. Studies show that men are far less likely than women to seek help when struggling and South Africa’s male suicide rate remains alarmingly high. The Character Company, a non-profit organisation working with boys who grow up without fathers, is helping rewrite that harmful script. The year 2025 marked three decades since the historic United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women, which took place in Beijing in 1995. The conference had produced the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark framework that reshaped the global agenda on gender equality and women’s rights. Africa’s leadership during that defining moment had been both visionary and bold. Honorable Gertrude Mongella of Tanzania, who served as Secretary-General of the conference, described it as the beginning of “a social, political, and economic revolution with no going back.” To reignite that original spirit and assess how far the continent had come, the Beijing+30 Advocacy Group joined hands with the Pan-African Parliament for a sitting under the theme “Commemorating 30 Years of the Beijing Platform for Action: Accelerating Gender Equality in Africa.” The gathering took place on the 6th of  November 2025 at the Pan-African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa.
