Leveraging technology for seamless communication with law enforcers against GBV

View descriptionShare

The leading feminist non-profit in the anti-GBV space, Gender Rights in Tech - GRIT (formerly Kwanele-Bringing Women Justice), uses innovative tech solutions to enhance access to support and justice for survivors.

At the heart of GRIT lies a deeply personal mission rooted in tragedy, in 2020 the founder's 19-year-old niece, nine months pregnant, lost her life due to Gender-Based Violence.

Abandoned without support or evidence for justice, this heart-wrenching incident became the catalyst for the birth of GRIT and the revolutionary GRIT mobile app.

Driven by the belief that technology can be a force for good, GRIT aims to break down barriers survivors face in reporting violence and achieving justice, ensuring that more voices are heard and experiences acknowledged.

This rebranding from Kwanele, which means "enough" in isiXhosa, to GRIT reflects the resilience and strength of survivors navigating the South African justice system.

We talk to Leonora Tima, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of GRIT - Gender Rights in Tech (formerly Kwanele Bringing Women Justice).
