Promoting the best tradesperson into management feels obvious. It's usually the costliest mistake a growing trades business makes.

Loyalty, fear and convenience drive most promotion decisions, not strategy. The longest-serving tradie gets the nod because owners feel obligated, want a retention win, or need to justify a pay rise. What follows is predictable: the business loses its most profitable person off the tools, then gains an undertrained, overwhelmed manager who defaults to doing the job themselves rather than leading a team.

The fix isn't complicated, but it is disciplined. Define the role and its responsibilities before naming a person. Look for planning, communication and coordination skills, not just trade mastery. Train and support whoever steps up for the long haul it actually takes. Position first, person second. Skip that order, and even a well-intentioned process can still cost you both the tradesman and the manager.

In this episode you’ll learn:

🔨 Owners promote out of loyalty, fear, or convenience rather than strategic thinking.
🔨 Losing your top tradie off the tools creates a real financial hit.
🔨 A poorly prepared manager often reverts to doing the job themselves.
🔨 Building management skills properly takes twelve to eighteen months, not days.
🔨 Define the role and responsibilities before deciding who should fill it.
🔨 Position first, person second prevents the most costly promotion mistakes possible.
