Understanding the SANDF/Iranian military exercise controversy

The latest around the Will for Peace naval exercises in Simon’s Town is that the military and navy were warned three months ago not to include Iran. This directive which was reportedly given by President Cyril Ramaphosa was allegedly defied by SANDF Chief, General Rudzani Maphwanya and SA-Navy Chief, Vice-Admiral Monde Lobese.  According to reports, the exercise which was led by China, but hosted in South Africa was not supposed to include Iran actively participating, but only as an observer. Tehran is being criticised for the brutality against opposition which is currently taking place in that country. Minister for Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga announced a board of inquiry to look into the matter which has also drawn criticism from the USA and opposition parties in parliament.
