Understanding the obligations from the Department of Health regarding teenage pregnancies

View descriptionShare

Ever since the news broke of how young children are giving birth at our hospitals and how the ages keep getting younger, we have been receiving calls from many of you our listeners not really knowing who to blame. Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramothoba has been very vocal on prosecuting the fathers of these babies for statutory rape and also calling on health practitioners to report these pregnancies. So from today (Monday) we are going to speak to the different departments about the role they should be playing in reporting what these children are doing. We kick it off with the national department of Health to hear from them as to what is the obligation from doctors and nurses when they admit a young child who is coming to give birth and what the laws are from their side?

Guest: Dr Lesley Bamford: Acting Chief Director for Child and Women’s Health
