Understanding racism and whether we are overreacting?

View descriptionShare

The issue of alleged racism at Pretoria Girls High has again sparked national headlines in the media. The case involves black learners reporting that white learners had set up a WhatsApp group chat to discuss them. One of the white learners reportedly pointed out in the group that the black learners feel that uniform rules re not applied equally. The 12 learners who are on the WhatsApp group have been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing. At the case is being investigated, we thought to use the opportunity to look at whether we are overreacting when it comes to reports of racism especially in schools? What is it we ought to understand about a school set up and what learners are saying about each other? At home as parents, what should we make our children understand what racism is and how to abide by school rules and accept disciplinary action when in the wrong despite a teacher's race?
